Hi, I havent been on the forum for the while but i have a question. Why is Spain so powerful. Do they ever get out of the first spot in points. Why are they so strong. Is this historically correct?

Spain is rightfully the most powerful in 1492. In the real world, they fell from such a lofty place, by 1600 or so. It is your job as a player of EU to see that it happens as such in your game. You ought to be chasing Spain in victory points for the first several years, but you can catch up.

If you use the EU score system, then Spain should still be the most powerful nation in 1792. They do sometimes get beaten by Austria or France in my HO games. The best way to screw Spain is to conquer the Aztecs and Incas before they do, no gold income for them
Discovering the americas turned Spain into a major superpower during the early 16th century. They don't usually collapse quite as badly in EU as they did IRL, so you'll have to nudge them along a bit
Just one thing: if you know where America is and hyou have some ships, even Teutonic Order can kick Spanish ass really hard: since they don't build too much fortresses and don't have much troops in America, you can win war with few month and 1000 cavalry.
Oh yes - the good old "ride-through-as-many-unfortified-provinces-you-can-in-two-months"-strategy. Work wonders with Spain...
technically Spain was only the most powerful of the west european nations..Poland in truth was more powerful in 1492 with its expanded power base and strong relations ..Poland was the largest nation in europe and controlled over third of its land mass <not counting its vassals>..but when Spain found america and got the gold she became the richest by far...and due to political focus of the era she was also far more politcally active than most other nations and did have better technology than most of her neighbors these helped her much in maintaining pereminant status in europe..as for the game...best way to take spain's points down is to attack her...win battles gives plus 1 to you minus 1 to him...same for taking its provs...i for one tend to almost always go after the Netherlands and take them from Spain...good boost to your opwn country no matter who you are...and yes racing Spain to the conquest of Aztecs is pretty good thing to do if you can...Portugal can actually do that well
One good way to get ahead of spain is to Colonize and hopefully also conquer India. As has been said, annexing the Incas and the Aztecs is always good, and it's always good to try to get a CoT in North America. It's a bit tougher though when you're not playing a colonial power...
Naah, it's quite hard to be ahead of Spain in colonization. And it's easier to let Spain do the colonizing while you just take their colonies

In my current UE game, IGC, Spain is in last place. Russia and myself (Austria) are battling for first place. Spain can fall from grace with the right coalitions lined up against them.

Well just why did Spain fall? I'm just wondering, as Russian doesn't seem such a big threat to Spain normally.
Spain can fall from grace easily-I've got ahead of them on points as a minor within fifty years before-and had more colonial possessions at the time. Spain fails about a third of the time probably, and even when it does build up a mighty points total, its' colonies are easy meat, as others have pointed out.

one of the countries its easy to beat spain on points with is the netherlands if you play with them free option...i think the "mission" points or such for reclaiming their provs from spain still apply or something ...cause i end up with rediculously high vp totals after taking all the lowlands/netherlands from spain...and this without any naval battles and few if any land battles...only 100 pts or so from diplomacy by 1530 or so yet total vp is usually like 400= 500 range...so either the bonus for regaining her provs still in effect or...theres a major bonus for taking provs form a big guy when you small? i tend to edge out spain making her second palce fast when i play netherlands...other nations tend to take a bit longer to do it..although the warlike ones can do it easy
Spain fell mostly because of weak leadership, a little ganging up of Netherlands, France and England and, specially, because of the poor state of the economy due to bad use of the richness coming from the colonies, that ended with hiper-inflation and an awfully bad commercial balance (they simply used the American silver to buy products abroad instead of developing inner industry, short-sightedness at its best)
