Spain should just be called Spain before and after the civil war

Flavour isn't useful for quick recognition of the political situation though.

"Spanish State" and "Spanish Republic" sound fine to me.

Not as important as calling Germany for Germany in my opinion. German Reich is just so... stupid. At least they should call it Deutsches Reich (or even Großdeutsches Reich) or call it just plain and simple Germany. German Reich just sounds retarded.

No, it`s not.
Deutsches Reich was the name of both the Empire and the Republic and since the Republic didn`t have an Emperor ruling it, duh, the word Reich was borrowed from German as it is.

German Reich is as accurate as you can get, it was the Republic`s name in the official documents up until the end of WW2.

Keep in mind there are engine limitations. As I understand from what the devs have said, nations are named by TAG and Idealogy (presumably, this means every nation has exactly four names - Democratic Nation, Fascist Nation, Communist Nation and Non-Aligned nation. For the OP, which Spain do you want to be called Spain? Because "the winner" is not a valid combination of TAG+Ideology. Likewise with Germany & German Reich. Which Germany should be "Germany" - Fascist Germany, or an alt-world restored Weimar Republic Germany? It can't just be "the current" Germany because the game works on TAG+ideology.

So depending on the ideology the name has to change?

A democratic Italy is not called "Italy"? Italian Republic?

It doesn't bother me that much but I agree with the OP. Spain should be Spain and Germany should be Germany. Some nations should change names of course. Like I say it doesn't really bother me, I'm just surprised it has to be like this.

Germany was officially called "Deutsches Reich" tho, which they basicly translated into German Reich rather than "Realm" for example. Deutsches/German Reich is the official naming the nsdap gave germany during their reign, often reffered to as 3. Reich. Should they rename Deutsches/German Reich to 3. Reich now? No. When western Germany became democratic and eastern germany became communist they were officially called BRD, Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany) and DDR, Deutsch Demokratische Republik (German "Democratic" Republic). Those are the most feasable names for germany under the different ideologies for example.

Why exactly should some names change and others shouldnt? It still was the republicans against the nationalists during the spanish civil war, so it is totally feasable to do it that way. Should they rename the United Kingdom only because some people are simply reffering to them as England or Britian? I dont think so.

The obvious reasons aside, i dont think the game would like having 2 countries in the game that share the same name. Having 3 Spains with 3 different country tags simply is unessesariely confusing aswell.

The UK is offically called "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" but that's a little long...
French Republic
Kingdom of Italy

All countries (or at least most, I'm no expert) had their official names but only Germany gets called by it? It just seems better to use the colloquial name to me. Of course this is just my own preferance.

The only names I think should change are ones linked to specific ideologies (Soviet Union for example).

Anyway it doesn't matter much to me and it seems like it is necessary due to the way the tags work.

Personally, I'd prefer just calling it Nazi Germany, seeing as there's no other fascist ideology other than the NSDAP that could take power, and it's pretty much universally called that anyways.

It seems to me that Paradox has for HoI4 made all nation names more dynamic and in general will be named in a way more like Spain in HoI3. Without addressing whether this is a good or bad thing, tag switching and tag forming really excites many people. From what I've read here on the forum + Reddit, and just talking with other players, people love it when names change and flags change in game, so I'm not surprised that Paradox wants to give players more of what they want.
  • People's Republic of the Alps
  • Siamese Anarchist Collective
  • Empire of Micronesia
  • Fascist Enclave of Vermont
  • Christmas Island
Perhaps with HoI4 we'll see flags and names switch so much, we'll find a limit to the community's thirst for them. Some people will always want more tags with a desire that is unquenchable.

While it can't strictly use one over the other, "German Reich" is a nice compromise. Paradox should and will favor exonyms over endonyms for common sense reasons. The logical endpoint of chasing perfectly accurate endonyms is having tags named "中华人民共和国".

Well, perhaps there should be an option for either having historical names, where nations are called whatever they were called without anything else in mind (no "republican spain", "silver league"), or one that reflects the political situation, where flavor, althistory, utility and humor play into what name is used.

I agree with the OP. Civil wars must have these different names to differ, afterwards I prefer the colloquial name.

On the Germany topic, as far as I know the Nazi regime called their country "Deutsches Reich", NOT "German Reich" (you guys know 'German' is an English word right?) or whatever. "GERMANY" was how the country was called by the English-speaking nations of the world at the time (the point-of-view used by every Paradox game). Nowadays it's just called "Nazi Germany", but thats a later name given to it.

So, I vote for "Germany", otherwise "Deutsches Reich" or "German Empire". A weird mix between the English and German languages, no.

Is it too hard to grasp that in English, the language we use now, both Weimar and Nazi Germany were called German Reich in official documents ?

I don't understand how anyone can disagree with this, other than if there is an issue with game mechanics. Maybe they save "Germany" for a democratic Germany.

Is it too hard to grasp that in English, the language we use now, both Weimar and Nazi Germany were called German Reich in official documents ?

Other countries in official documents (in English)-
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Kingdom of Italy
French Republic
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Polish Republic
Kingdom of Sweden

Why is Germany the only country that needs an official name? Like I say the only explanation is they are saving the "Germany" tag for another ideology. Which is fine, but German Reich is not a more appropriate name than Germany.

I believe it's called Germany when it's democratic.

Reich does not mean Empire... In German, "France" is "Frankreich". This is just far too common error, and people really should know better.

Frankenreich?

Actually, I looked up Frankreich, and I got directed to the more official Französische Republik. But I don't know German, so that could just be what Germans say about France behind their backs at EU meetings for all I know.
