Wondering how to do this.

Played a game as Bohemia, where I managed to become emperor by vassalizing enough electors. I tried doing this the friendly way, but got nowhere. So I ended up vassalizing them militarily.

If I use the same strategy as Spain, I'm wondering if its even doable. You have to do it before Austria gets the HRE reform that ends HRE elections and makes Austria the permanent Emperor. This usually happens by the mid to late 1500s. Is there enough time?

Keep in mind that you also have to deal with France as well as Austria in a long series of wars to vassalize at least 4 electors.

This usually happens by the mid to late 1500s

There's no way that "usually" happens by then. No way. Not with the Reformation screwing with things. If the AI pulls it off, it's in the 1600's, more often the 1700's.

Why would you have to "deal with France"? You don't need to do anything with them. Although it is helpful to tussle with them once to take Languedoc, so you have a path of owned territory to the HRE.

I would go so far as to say that I only see the HRE even get past the second reform in maybe 50% of my games. A lot of it has to do with whether Austria loses the throne or not, and that has a lot to do with how the dice rolls with the reformation and the Burgundian inheritance. I find that Austria often overextends itself severely protecting the HRE and eventually gets blasted enough that Bohemia or Brandenburg takes over. That said, even if the HRE does pass the reform ending elections, can't you make them repeal that in a war? You used to be able to do that regardless of whether you are in the HRE or not, but I don't know if that was changed in a patch or not.

you can peacefully vassalize electors. get diplo ideas and expansion ideas for diplo rep. if you have a distance penalty, either conquer a province nearby or vassalize a country nearby. vassalizing closeby nations reduces the distance penalty.

Well, they have -50 elector malus and 3 out of 7 cannot enter royal marriage which makes non-diplovassalizable.
I'd just do it militarily. Austria often gets involved in wars and goes all-in so I'd wait for this moment and declare war on 3 electors at the same time. Send them loans and hope you get a CB.

When I did it the biggest issue was that I kept having female rulers. It is fairly trivial to vassalise electors when you have the might of Spain.

That happened to me, too. I actually got elected while I was still Castile, then got a female ruler, then had to wait half a dozen decades or so to get it back after forming Spain.

yeah this is just silly. losing your election because your leader is female is not the player's fault. getting screwed over by the RNG really sucks. they really should remove this restriction.

It is also historical. Female leaders were not eligible to be elected Emperor. Hence why, even after winning the war of Austrian Succession Maria Theresia was not made Empress, but instead had her husband appointed to the office.(in game they simply make the Pragmatic Sanction allow for females to be Holy Roman Emperor, as she was the de facto ruler of the empire.)

I like to bust in through East Fresia at the beginning and take the -2 stability penalty. Its not a part of the HRE and will put you within close proximity to 2 of the electors for you to start out. Then try allying with the enemies of those electors and wait for wars for you to jump in if you aren't powerful enough yet to take on Austria, if they happen to be the emperor, on offensive campaigns.

If it worked you could go Burgundian Inheritance and from then take 2 electors, to be sure 3 and hope there is a weaker hre than austria or just the ai played the bad guy.
Or just pu austria and take everything http://i.imgur.com/G9HXCya.jpg?1
Wait some years till the new hre dies and while you're colonizing...http://i.imgur.com/nttE3q3.jpg?1

Profit http://i.imgur.com/qziTHyR.jpg?1 (look at the curia points aha)

Those are impressive results, but for me, I like the triggered modifiers too much, so I would always hold the key provinces in the North of Africa.

That said, even if the HRE does pass the reform ending elections, can't you make them repeal that in a war? You used to be able to do that regardless of whether you are in the HRE or not, but I don't know if that was changed in a patch or not.

Last time I did that, it did not restore the elections properly and I filed a bug report. It was 1.0 or 1.1 though, and while I don't recall seeing a patch note about it being fixed, maybe it has.
Does anyone know?

it's pretty easy just vassalize electors, specifially, saxony the paltinate mainz trier or colonge are going to be your best best. get like three of them, possibly more. i did this even when austria was emperor and i overthrew him . i was allied with asutria though the whole time. it was a good run, it involved me gaining PU over hungary and austria later in that game so it all worked out, i had all of europe aside from northern france and italy in my grasp

that was a great run, i got lots of achievements for it. i think it's still like 1780 or something, i should finish it. i just got discouraged because i didnt think i could WC with it even as good as it was, i didn't think i had enough time. also, shouldn't have enacted all reforms

I got this one when I was finishing my Castile/Spain game. I had about 50 years left with all my goals accomplished, so all I did was send diplomats to a few electors to improve my relationships with them, proclaimed guarantee with them all and also sent them gifts. After a few more years, the Emperor died and I was elected. :)

Those are impressive results, but for me, I like the triggered modifiers too much, so I would always hold the key provinces in the North of Africa.

I know but : 1 in my game portugal lost his cores at the game start, so no ceuta to boost the modifier up
2 i focused on royal marriages and played the dinasty traitor as you can see, in this game as spain i managed to pu:
Aragon naples (event) Portugal (claimed) Austria (got it passively) France (claimed and this was my main objective of the campaign) The Palatinate (got it 2x1 while claiming france) , Sweden (royal marriages policy pay off). And trust me is very difficult to pu portugal and france in mid game since they always go 100 prestige.
Now i miss -7 points to vassalize gb and -2 (-.-) to vassalize poland. No sign of diplomatic events in 40 years having both diplomatic and expansion, neither a good +3 statesman which could double up the +5 bonus...Base tax is exponential so i just got -85 instead of -90 with big countries. I guess it's a must to unify hre to get tax boost, but nvm i played spain to paint the map gold not grey :p so yeah when you become hre i suggest to vote on all reforms except the last one, and just absorbe the huge vassals to get a good base tax boost. Spain is already a cultural union and since usually you absorbe the whole portugal i prefer to keep it so half of my empire does not revolt.

So the last achievement i'm looking for from this game is just master of india... The wc imo is possible with austria and austria only because of the +5 diplo rep, that's all. An huge bonus. But i have to say that doing pu with normal bonuses and no ultra points gotten from hre is funnier... I actually didn't think that a nation without advantages could get so many pus, and even eliminate austria with their game :p

And always try to rm and pu france, never conquer it.
