Spain and the Election of 1936

Spain on January 1st 1936 shouldn't be Communist really, it was like 1/4 fascist, 1/4 neutral (royalist), 1/4 communist and 1/4 democratic and had elections (not a completely communist country). The civil war happened due to the polarization of Fascists vs Communists driving the centrist Democrats and Neutral parties into the far right and left and the election of Feb 16th 1936 was a stalemate.

Spain should start Democratic, though the civil war should push Republican Spain to the left big time, especially if they win.

It's the flag of the International brigade which mainly consisted of communist volunteers. They fought for the Republican side. A few of them came from my home state of Wisconsin too. You can find a link on the unit below.

Or democrats supporting an elected government against a military coup ?

From what I have read, many volunteers were not communists, but they had to travel by the communists channels to get to Spain.

When the stalinists got a growing hold on the "republican" army, they purged the brigades of the democrats, socialists, anarchists and non-stalinists communists.

No, this is the flag of the International brigades, the star is their emblem not their flag.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the game supports more than two groups in a civil war so having the two main sides makes sense for this game.
