i didn't think you would know her, but i just thought i'd point out that i sort of had ties to your part of the world, once upon a time. not that a yank and a canuck would ever have much in common to begin with. :p

I was just being funny. You know how it goes when you hear someone's from such-and-such a place. The first question I usually get asked is: "Oh, do you know..." So I was just pre-empting ya' :D

A Yank and a Canuck have anything in common? As if! ;)

Morning all and nice to see so many about. I won't add any further remarks on Mississauga since that's been fairly extensively covered already.

Storey: Onen's time will come though when exactly I do not know.

KoN: Being a game to colonise the world, I don't want to do it all myself so I won't be sealing off North America entirely. I'll leave a few gaps here and there and what those colonise appear in time. As for ToT, I can only say I've been robbed thus far with all those reformed country trade posts about. Portugal, otoh, should have been laughing but for the fact that Osse is pretty crap at this game.

Oh how uncomprehending you humans can be some times. Do you think that Ulmo will be cowed by a little paint on a stone statue? Perhaps Tulkas, Manwe or Melkor would be roused to action for they are vain and seek either the praise of humans or their subservience. I do not seek such things for it serves me not to distract myself from greater works. But then again, I may just call on the oceans to smite those who despise me.

I have no time for such things. Let me continue

**************************

1513

There is little to report from this year of rebuilding. The only matters of note were the following.

Letters were sent to Naples (+190), Bohemia (+12) and Brandenburg (+28) but Cologne refuse to join our alliance despite our strong ties. Tax collectors are appointed in our city colonies of Curacao and Tortuga while Lima is fortified.

On matters colonial, we establish colonies in Mobile, San Bernardino and Parana while others are sent to Rio Grande and Oahu. Grijalva takes his troops from Kauai and clears Oahu of natives.

In the war in the Balkans, Venice has captured Kosovo from Turkey.

**************************

1514

Tax collectors are appointed in Lima and Tucuman while Gerona and Messina fortifications are expanded. On diplomatic front, Brandenburg rejects two offers of a Royal Marriage while relations with Bohemai are improved (+16) with a letter.

Colonies were established in Rio Grande, Kauai while attempt in Sierra Madre fails. Colonists were sent to Matagorda, Nehalem and Sierra Madre.

We suffer a disaster in May with 10 ships (mainly galleys) were lost in a fire. It is well that these will shortly be obsolete.

Technologically, the infrastructure is improved to Early Baroque (Infra Level 4) while we also develop Artillery Support (Land Tech 4).

In the Balkans, Turkey achieves successes with the capture of Croatia while Cyrenaica has captured Serbia

***************************

1515

We hear news that the new colony in Kauai has managed to establish itself as a bit of a trading centre taking all the new world trade from our huge colonial empire. We send merchants immediately to gather this trade for Spain.

We appoint a chief judge for Lima and increase fortifications in Tucuman

Colonies were established in Matagorda, Oahu and Nehalem, Savannah and Sierra Madre while others were sent to Honduras and Costa Rica. Regions in Central America are cleared of native tribes

In May, the General Cordoba, the victor of North Africa and France dies. I fear it will be a while before we have another general as good as him.

June brings news of war amongst the German states with Brandenburg (Bohemia, Bavaria, Thuringen) declares war on Saxony (Hanover, Hessen). By September, Saxony has annexed Thuringen. In the Balkans, Hungary has retaken the province of Serbia.

We improve our naval capacity with the development of Metal Cannon Balls (Naval Tech 4). It seems a little surprising that no-one had thought of this before.

**********************

1516

Spain has a new king in Philip as news breaks that certain religious factions are preaching a new faith. They are being dubbed as Protestants. Our first acts of the year are to expand our fortifications in Valencia and Catalonia and send a gift to Bohemia (+57). We then return to South America and declare war on the Incas for a second time.

Our first action is in Huanuco where we faces 17,000 Incas with 12,000 of our own troops and lose the battle. We capture Arica and Moquega as 30,000 inca troops besiege Lima

In February, retreating troops from Huanuco capture Cajamarca and then split up to capture both Guayaquil and Huanuco. By the middle of the year, we have taken Ayacucho and Potosi and demand these two rich provinces from the Incas in exchange for peace. They accept and leave Lima unscathed after five month of siege.

In the North German war, Magdeburg is captured by Hanover and recaptured by Brandenburg before Brandenburg finally pays 172D to Saxony for peace. Hardly a successful war for Brandenburg. Turkey has now captured Serbia for the second time in the Balkan war against Hungary.

We send colonists to Tehuacan, Campeche and Tehuantepec as we see successful colonisation of Honduras and Costa Rica.

********************

1517

New taxes are used to fortify Ayacucho and Potosi while those in Holland and Zeeland are expanded. The war in the Balkans ends, first with Hungary ceding Serbia to Turkey and then with Turkey ceding Bosnia to Venice. A very pointless war I think unless you are neighbours with any of the players.

We establish colonies in Campeche and Tehuantepec but fail twice in Tehuacan. Colonist are sent to Cartagena and Mosquitos.

A string of Royal Marriage in Europe increase ties with Austria (+190), Genoa (+130) and Cologne.

Mid year brings mission success in keeping Lyonnais but failure to conquer Milan. A new mission is chosen for us to vassalise Cologne which we see as being virtually impossible. We choose to set other objective to keep Lyonnais and to ensure that North Africa is free of Turkey.

In July, Lorraine agrees to become part of Spain now giving us a direct link between our south-east territories and the Low countries. Spain grows in strength again. I have little doubts that I will crush all before me now.

Towards winter, Tulkas starts to get agitated and rushes into a mad war with the Golden Horde. It seems to me a rather strange time to fight a war given the climate in the region. We shall see what Tulkas has in mind.

******************************

1518

An explorer by the name of Magellan arrives in Holland. Quite why we need so many of these explorers is beyond me but he is duly sent on his way round South America to aid PInzon in his voyages of discovery.

Our fortifications in Lorraine and Alsace are expanded while Tax collectors are appointed in Potosi and Ayacucho.

Diplomatic activity continues to concentrate on Germany with a letter to Baden (+11), a Royal Marriage to Wurtemberg (+70) and Hessen, and the admittance of Wurtemberg into our alliance.

In the west we hear the gravest of news as PInzon dies at sea. PInzon the greatest explorer to have ever lived and possible the greatest who will ever live. First to sail around Cape Horn and great explorer of the Pacific. During the year colonies are established in Cartagena and Mosquitos while Tehuacan colony fails for a third time. Barahona colony is expanded and colonists are sent to Mazatlan.

The other thing of note this year was the remarkable achievement of Pskov in the Russian war against the Golden Horde. By the end of the year, they have captured Kujbyschew and Bogutjar.
******************************

1519

Carlos becomes king of Spain and its empire at the beginning of the year. It seems a custom that the 1st January is taken as the coronation day. As a mark of the great respect with which Spain is held, he is chosen as the Holy Roman Emperor.

We also have news of a new explorer by the name of Cortes who has suddenly arrived with 1000 men in our small colony in Havana. Such resourcefulness can be used but first we need to raise some troops to accompany him. We expand fortifications in the Hague and Friesen

Our first task this year will be to annex Naples and two letters and one gift improve relations while troops are raised in Sicily. However, in May, they decline our offer and even choose to break their ties of vassals to us. This is unexpected to say the least. We nonetheless managed to arrange a Royal Marriage later in the year (+115).

Charles’ first year as king is exceptionally successful as good government policies (twice) invest 2000D in both trade and infrastructure.

Our only success this year in colonisation finally arrives in Tehuacan although others are sent to Moron, Empalme and Mazatlan. One suspects that Hernan Cortes has a strange sense of humour in choosing names for provinces. I mean, Moron?! By the end of the year, he has taken a more moderate line as his explorations carry him to the mainland and the discovery of the province of Concho. The natives are politely asked to leave Spanish lands. Technically they are not our lands but the natives were not to know this.

In the east, Tulkas shows his total lack of regard for the heroism of his Pskovian allies in accepting 17D from the Golden Horde for peace. He was not happy with the whole affair and I hear afterwards that he went hence from the chamber of the gods unto a mighty rock and smote it with his iron fist till the ground shook with his wrath. I think it must have been highly amusing to have been there.

In August, the navy develops Galleons (Naval level 5) and makes a dramatic leap in warfare technology. Spain shall become the masters of the seas or my name is not Ulmo.

We are saddened by the loss of Balboa in August while living in the old Inca province of Potosi. He was a great explorer and conqueror and shall be missed.

***********************

1520

Another explorer arrives in Zacatecas at the beginning of the year. His name is Narvaez. It seems we have more than enough but there are still a few routine tasks for him to deal with. We expand the fortifications in Sardinia and Aragon and then after a long period of rest, turn our attention to North Africa in our declaration of war on Tripolitana.

Early action sees Tripoli besieged and Colonna is following behind with cannon. In September Colonna dies with the walls of Tripoli weakening. The prospect of a quick war with easy gains beckons until Helvetia declares war in November.

This can only be the work of Manwe. Helvetia’s allies are Portugal, France and Scotland. We call upon all our allies and the support us. Shortly afterwards, Tripoli capitulates and Tripolitana is annexed. But the damage has been done. We are at war with Manwe’s alliance for a second time and our troops roll into action. By the end of the year, Paris and Champagne are besieged by Spanish forces while Austria has besieged Helvetia.

In the new world, Cortes and Narvaez continue to find new provinces in Wichita, Mississippi, Coahuilha, Chihuahua, Illinois, Fox, Milwaukee and Ensenada while Magellan discovers Tahiti and ferries Grijalva to oversee colonisation. We establish a colony in Empalme while Barahona colony expands. Mazatlan, Moron and Altar all fail but these are less important matters while Ulmo attends to Manwe’s minions.

Oh, how it saddens the heart of the faithful, to see the Gods sending armies against each other, clashing in battle, when it is obvious that there is but one who should rule supreme, the Lord of the Oceans!:)

Interesting to listen to a Spaniard expand, so far, I've only a witness to their turbo-expanding when I played other countries. With explorers and conquistadors flocking to their banners, colonizing the whole world indeed appears to be quite easy. Were it not for those obnoxious rivals in Europe!:D

But, indeed, as to quote Xanadu: 'Good work!'

Well guys a quick hello again. For the next instalment I shall be along soon. Let us just say that it is all war and mayhem. The Lord of the Seas, fresh from that little naval disaster will be busy fending off the forces of jealous rivals or severely slapping those weaker beings who wish to play with the big boys. With so much fighting going on, I may need a few mercenaries around. For now the only big name players I'm up against are Manwe and Osse but you can expect a few more to join in.

Xanadu: Colonise the world scenarios, if it is possible, rely on getting to places quickly, particularly anywhere with growth rates of 8-9%. That way you plant a colony and leave it to grow. Spain's problem is that any colony they stick in Africa is liable to disappear a little too quickly so the only way to India, China and Siberia is across the Pacific. The port in Maroni was just a base to get to River Plate and the first Inca war was in time to give me another port to get up to Michoagan and from there west. By and large it worked a treat except I would have done a lot more if Pinzon had headed south from Hawaia and not South West.

LD: You say these fearsome mercenaries were from Palermo? I'd better go and check that out before Manwe or, god :)D) forbid, Melkor hire them first.

v. Berl. : I've seen a very strong AI Spain in one game but I guess their biggest problem is that AI France is very strong and can cause a lot of trouble in Europe for Spain. But in the New World they are undisputed masters for most of the game unless harassed by humans players.

Manwe has indeed developed an alliance against me and has recruited Osse to his side. However, in bringing smaller players into the game he has failed to realise that, in Orome and Mandos I have powerful allies of my own if they can bring their might to bear. Manwe is clear and to the point: I am to be cut down to size for harbouring ambition unbefitting of one of the Valar. It seems that I am the only one here who recognises that this is all a game that the Gods will play. Before long, I can assure you, Manwe will be forced to realise this.

A word of warning should be made. My adherents have been noting troubling signs in places considered most sacred to the Lord of the Oceans. Followers of Onen, one I cannot consider as a serious rival, have been involved. Rest assured that I will deal with him at a later stage. For now I have other matters to attend to.

**************************

1521

January

The first activity of the new year is to divert taxes to cast cannon in Spain and Lorraine. Fighting occurs between French troops and our allies in Helvetia while Helvetia has besieged Tyrol. To the north, our siege in Paris is attacked by 25,000 new troops and we quickly retreat our force of half this size. By the end of the month we have begun a siege in Bourgogne.

February

During the second month be begin a siege of Oporto while the French besiege Lyonnais. We start a second siege of Paris. Towards the end of the month 26,000 Spanish are attacked by the 25,000 French in Franche-Comte

March

Lorraine revolts at the start of the month. This is something we could do without. The battle in Franche-Comté goes badly and we retreat after losing equal numbers. Besancon is besieged by the French.

April

We begin a siege in Algarve. With fortunes not going entirely our way in France, we shall have to use Ossë’s Portugal as the whipping boy of this war. Our forces retreating from Besancon are defeated by rebels in Lorraine. The French are now attacking an Austro-Wurtemberg force in Wurtemberg itself.

May

The French recapture Milan from rebels.

June

We finally defeat the rebels in Lorraine. A large naval battle occurs in the south as 17/4/0 fleet attacks a Franco-Portuguese fleet of 19/4/0. We lose two galleys but succeed in sinking 3 French warships.

July

We succeed in capturing Paris and Bourgogne from the French. It appears that this war should be a lot easier than I would otherwise have thought.

August

We draw our attention to the French siege of Lyon as 28000 troops are brought to bear on 37000 French soldiers. Our forces include a group of mercenaries who call themselves the Freemen Company and news has come to me of their growing reputation. Although often associated with Papal forces, they have agreed to fight for Spain against France. As a back up for this battle, we have nearly 11000 cavalry following closely on the heels of our infantry and report a crushing victory. The French are routed losing almost 30000 men to less than 7000 on the Spanish side. A second force arrives later with cannon and the Spanish commander orders a withdrawal, much to the ire of the Freemen.

We capture the Portuguese province of Algarve and begin a siege of Champagne

September

We begin a siege of Lisbon

October

We begin a siege of Milan

December

A spanish force of 21,000 attack the French siege in Wurtemberg but seeing a large mixed froce with almost 70 cannon. We make a tactical withdrawal. The Freemen Company were unhappy yet again but they will have their work.

You may have noticed that I have omitted any mention of explorations or colonisation. Briefly, we have discovered many other lands in the west and have established a colony in Mazatlan. Colonists were sent to Tahiti, Duluth, Superior and Columbia. We also lost our explorer Magellan while travelling west from Tahiti. It appears that the discovery of this small insignificant island will have been his only claim to fame. A rather poor performance when one considers the great explorers of earlier years.

**************************

1522

January

Another round of troop raising is called for as we decide that, with the war in Europe extending, it is high time we had one in South America. They do not even read the declaration itself since they are familiar enough with our traditional way of having these delivered.

For some reason which is beyond me, the Mameluks join the French Alliance which now includes the Papal States. Melkor here sees an opportunity to undermine Manwe as Turkey declares war on the Mameluks. Manwe and Osse pledge their support although what Osse thinks he can do is something I wish to know.
In South America, something strange is happening as we are now seeing several battles in Huanuco, Cuzco and Moquega. It seems that the Incas are developing an unusual tactic of actually having some troops around.

February

The Incas still need to improve their tactics as they lose in Huanuco and Cuzco but manage to defeat us in Moquega.

The Freemen Company are called to battle again now with supporting cannon. But they are to be disappointed once more as Milan is captured and we take Milan and Bourgogne from France for peace. Manwe is suitably chastised. We immediately fortify Milan. It is well to note now that, with France silenced, her allies will all be soundly chastised, or would all be if I could remember where Scotland is.

March

More battles in South America in the provinces of Titicaca, Arequipa, Guayaquil and Potosi and we will all but the last of these.

April

A breakthrough occurs as we develop weapons that will later be known as Early Arquebuses (Land Tech 5).

There is an early revolt in Bourgogne as the garrison takes the forts. It seems that Manwe is still able to stir up unrest in his old lands. We now choose to launch an assault on Lisbon and crush all resistance forcing the Portuguese to surrender the province of Oporto and 33D and their maps. We how see routes to India and spice islands to the east barely two sea zones from our own discoveries from the west. But we have no explorer so we shall not be able to break through to China from the west just yet. I notice also that Osse has failed to establish a single colony. Quite pathetic!! I believe that he has still to get used to this game.

The Freemen Company are now involved in a battle against Helvetia forces of around 17000 in Lyonnais. With a combined force of (18.9/8.5/2.0), the Helvetians are almost entirely annihilated for the loss of just 5000 Spanish forces. We then move on Helvetia and besiege Zurich where a recruit force of 12000 is sent packing.

The Incas hand over the provinces of Arica and Cajamarca for peace.

May

We defeat rebels in Bourgogne and besiege the province.

July

Success in our mission to keep Turkey from North Africa and to keep Lyonnais but we fail again to vassalize Cologne.

August

The Great One is now choosing to play games with us. I have a mission to arrange a royal marriage with the Pope or one of his bishops. Oh, funny ha ha! Must have spent ages thinking up that one.

Sept-Dec

Little of note for the rest of the year except that Milan joins Bourgogne in revolt during November. At the end of the year, Christmas Day to be precise, Zurich falls and we consider their fate.

During the year, discoveries continued and colonies were established in Dulth, Superior, Tahiti and Columbia while colonists were also sent to Olympia and Kebec.

***************************

1523

As the new year arrives, we have a new explorer by the name of Loaisa in Holland. Off to Tahiti for you!! I’m in a bit of a good mood so decide that the fate of Helvetia be generous. As from the start of the year, they are to be an integral part of Spain.

If the truth be known, I was somewhat worried about the reaction this might bring about amongst the other gods but decided that it would be safer than leaving open no route to Milan

We appoint chief judges in Potosi and Ayacucho and fortify Arica and Cajamarca.

Well it seems that I have created a little resentment in this neck of the woods as the mighty Hessen alliance (Hessen and Hanover) declares war on Spain, Poland, Austria, Wurtemberg and Naples.

There are to be even more upset when we receive news that the city of Dijon is recaptured freeing up troops for this trivial war. As Emperor, Charles, orders his troops to avoid and fighting and directly attack the Hessen/Hanoverian territories.

In February, merchants in Canarias donate 9 warships to the Spanish fleet. Quite generous of them don’t you think. Towards the end of the month, the Milanese rebels are defeated. Little else happens for the first half of the year except beginning of our siege of Hannover and the Hessen siege of Holland. In this time colonists are sent to Azuay and to Fox while one is established in Kebec.

Then, in July, Manwe finds a loophole in that peace settlement we agreed. With a new alliance consisting of Portugal, Savoy and Genoa, he convinces Savoy to declare war. All of our allies support us again.

But all hell breaks loose ni August as Aulë joins the fray bringing England into conflict with Genoa. This time Ossë has had enough and declines to fight although England are supported by Onen’s Venice and the mighty nations of Teutonic Order, Navarra, Knights and Hanseatic League. Genoa are supported by France and Savoy. In this convoluted war, we are first to strike against France by besieging Béarn.

September

There is another revolt in Milan and the city is taken by rebels. Now why was it that Manwe did not have as much trouble? The rebels are defeated by our allies who then move to besiege.

Portuguese attack us in Extremaduras but suffer a crushing defeat.

We spy a French army heading south and choose to assault Béarn supported by Navarrese. The assault fails and barely kills 1000 defenders.

October

The campaign in Germany develops with Hessen and Oldenberg besieged. In Portugal, we are defeated by a cavalry force.

November

We are attacked in Béarn by France. The combined Spanish/Navarra army numbers some (38.2 / 7.9 / 12.8) against a French force of (37.2 / 4.7 / 4.0). We are also attacked in Oporto by a Portuguese force of (0 / 4.9 / 0.3) against our (12.5 / 0 / 6.1)

December

Both battles are lost although the French lost almost half their force compared to less than one-sixth of the Spanish/Navarra force. In Oporto, the losses were more even.

For the second half of the year, colonies were established in Azuay and Nanaimo while colonists were sent to Sitka and more colonists were sent to Azuay.

**********************

1524

January

The turn of the year brings us a host of news. Two more explorers have arrived. One by the name of De Soto is found in Tampico while a certain PIzarro turns up in Panama. The latter of these has some great desire to conquer South America but I feel that his destiny lies further west.

We also here news that a new trading centre has opened in the Falkland Islands drawing much of the South American trade. Merchants are sent instantly.

Finally, the people of Hessen show themselves to be the treacherous fools that they are by embracing the Protestant faith. Spain will now pursue them with even greater vigour than before.

We capture the city of Hanover but retreat from a Hanoverian force in Munster.

February

Helvetia revolts at the beginning of the month but are defeated by the army there.

Oldenberg is captured and we are offered the province from Hanover in exchange for peace. It seems a suitable war of getting one nation out of this war. WIth Hanover out of the war we can now move to defeat Hessen and Munster is besieged a second time

March

Troops are raised across the Caribbean and De Soto heads toward Erie. Hessen is captured leaving one province to fall.

April

Holland is lost to Hessen forces and we order an assault in Munster supported by 200 cannon. The city of Milan is recaptured from rebels and the troops move on to Savoy. We final begin a siege of Lisbon.

News from the west emerges that another nation, the Iroquois have been discovered by Cortes.

May

Our assault on Munster break the city quickly and we are able to demand the province and 40D for peace. Holland is returned to Spanish control. We begin a siege of Turin.

July

There is another revolt in Milan and a first revolt in Munster. Someone is stirring up unrest in the empire.

Europe is once again rocked as Prussia declares war on the mighty Knights Hospitallers. Ossë’s Portugal supports Prussia but the Knights have Aulë’s England and Onen’s Venice

Pizarro boards ship in Atlixco to sail west to China.

August

We defeat the rebels in Munster but allow the French invading force to handle those in Milan. Our siege force around Turin defeats 2000 lunatic French cavalry in the Alps.

September

Another french force is defeated in Savoie

October

We are reminded of war in the east as Turkey gains Lebanon and Nussaybin plus 31D from the Mameluks in exchange for peace.

November

Tago is captured and Portugal pays us a pitiful sum of 14D for peace. Elsewhere, the Austrian’s have found a richer foe and take 198D from Genoa for peace. I should mention something to Orome that money gained in a peace settlement is supposed to be share amongst the allies.

There is little more of note during the year except the news of a colony in Sitka and the expansion of our Azuay and Barahona colonies.

********************

Once again, we leave the story in a state of war that was to continue unabated for many years to come. What part I may have played in this little scene you will just have to wait before you can find out.

The acolyte looked up from her cleaning chores at the front of the temple. She had been muttering to herself about why the followers of Ulmo were inevitably so messy. But a strange sound had caught her attention. There would be a thump and then a pause, a thump and a pause. This in itself was puzzling but the fact that is was getting closer was becoming disconcerting to her. The massive temple door started to slowly open so she scurried to the side and hid behind one of the huge pillars that supported the intricately carved vaulted ceiling. The carvings had been painted and depicted the triumphs of Ulmo over all who opposed him. A small man entered the temple and paused at the door. He was obviously a sailor by his dress and manner. As he walked down the isle his wooden peg leg thumped on the stone floor. He made his way to the alter and muttered a prayer.

"Blessed be he that worships Ulmo.
Sacred are those who understand his wisdom.
Entertained are those who hear his stories"

Glancing around he didn't see the young acolyte who had followed him down the great temple in the shadows. She watched fascinated by the strange looking man who had certainly come from some far off place. The stranger made a strange sign with his right hand and put a bundle in the large donation bowl. Then without another word he turned and left with that swaying walk that so many sailors used aboard ship. As the door closed the acolyte went to the alter. A sailor worshiping here was normal but few left a sack in the donation bowl. She leaned over the sack and opened it and discovered that it was filled with sardines. Now she was really puzzled. What a strange gift for the mighty Ulmo she thought. With a shrug she closed the sack and starting sweeping the floor again muttering to herself that maybe she should think about moving to Onen's temple. It was suppose to be easier to keep clean.

"What's with these Spaniards Captain?"

"Yeah. Bloomfield's right. They hire us, then spend the whole war retreating!"

"Can't say for certain, De Lyon. At least we get paid."

"True. Anyway, it's almost time to board ship. Here comes Sergeant Storey. Quick, who has the sardines?"

Well, good afternoon (CET). Another update on the way and various responses also on other threads

KoN : You will have to wait and see how I try to deal with the Portuguese problem. After all they have a responsibility to colonise Brazil, parts of Africa and Indonesia.

Storey: Thanks for all the fish ;)

Xanadu and Emperor: You'll just have to wait to see how I get on with the Dutch (see previous remark) ;) But Calvin is still some time yet.

LD: RETREAT !!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES !!!

1525

January

The year arrives and a new explorer by the name of Cerón turns up in Holland with 3 ships. There are many regions for him to explore so he is sent on his way.

Our allies Wurtemberg turn Protestant. Heresy! They shall all be burned and cast into the pit of fire where their souls shall weep amidst the pain of eternal damnation. Hey, it's quite fun being Spanish at this time. So many opportunities to play to the crowd. In reality, since we are at war, we do not throw the stupid Germans from our camp but I do not think it will be long before we can dispense with their aid.

We expand our minimal forts in Sierra Nevada, Tripolitania and Euskadia.

We establish a colony in Olympia and expand our existing colony in Azuay. More colonists are sent to Azuay.

Towards the end of the month, France force Navarra to the peace table and take 250D in reparations. In our own war with Savoy, we capture Turin. However, I am not amused when I hear that our army commander of the siege allowed some self-promoting Austrian general to claim the city as his own.

February

Manwe sends his troops to cut off supplies to our men in Savoie. Colonists are sent to expand Barahona colony.

March

The French in Milan are crushed as we agree to pay Genoa 4D for peace in what they must see as a crushing victory over mighty Spain.

April

Swiss peasants revolt in Helvetia and turn on French and Savoy troops in the region. Quite conveniently timed I think. I must get myself a hat so that I could doff it to the Swiss for their brave gesture in support of Spain. However the rebels are crushed and it is the French who besiege Zurich.

We lead a force of (18.3 / 3.6 / 10.1) against 6,500 French infantry in Paris and crush them with the loss of 1,000 men to over 5,000 French soldiers. Paris is besieged.

Another battle takes place in Helvetia as (17.0 / - / 5.6) attack a (9.3 / 12.5 / - ) French/Savoyard force in Helvetia.

We begin a siege of Nice.

May

In fierce fighting in the Alps, we relieve Zurich for the loss of 5,600 infantry and 11 cannon to 5,400 enemy infantry and 3,700 enemy cavalry. Honours go to the Spanish again.

In the Far West, Loaisa discovers the Fiji Islands while Pizarro arrives in Tahiti and meets the other conquistador Grijalva. However, in a terrible mix-up brought about while reorganising troops, the peace loving natives are killed.

July

Narvaez discovers Yukon and the gold of the province. The selfish natives are executed for trying to keep this for themselves.

Our colonies in Azuay and Barahona are expanded.

August

We capture Paris and our troops return with the entire French treasury of 188D. Manwe is, once more, shamed into submission. Perhaps he will have learnt his lesson. The money is useful in that it allows us to send a colonist to that nice region we called Yukon. There job is fairly simple. Send us that gold!!!

September

Pizarro lands in Viti Levu and deals with the natives in the only language that they understand.

October

Our colony in Tahiti expands. With hindsight, I think this second expedition was a little unnecessary.

November

The peasants revolt in Alsace and besieged the capital. We send colonists to the Fiji islands safe in the knowledge that they will not have to worry about adapting to the local customs which, we are assured, did include bashing people on the head with a huge club.

December

Nice surrenders to our forces and in a move of remarkable bravado, Orome jumps in and annexes them. I appeal most strongly to The Great One that it was Savoy who had declared war on me and that I was the alliance leader. I am informed that, henceforth, the province of Nice will be mine and that Savoie shall be Austrian. If I am not enemy enough in Valinor, Orome seems to see fit that I shall be made yet more unpopular, and that, at a time when I was trying to get on better terms with my less able companions.

We at least in means that we are now at peace again which reminds me that we should now turn our attention west towards the lands of the Iroquois. Mmm. Where to start?

1526

January

Our first move of the new year is to expand our minimal forts in Baleares, Gibraltar and Tunisia. We also order 3 warships to be built in the Caribbean.

Our second move of the year is to declare war on the Iroquois. In spite of the fact that we have only recently met. I am assured that the relations between our two nations is that of beloathed enemies and that all in Spain are in agreement that we have good cause for war against peace who wave around small axes and hollow like strange animals. We have three forces in the region led by Cortes, De Soto and Vitoria. Cortes arrives quickly in Onondaga and assaults immediately.

In a separate move, we persuade the rebels in Alsace that they have more important matters to deal with.

February

De Soto is attacked in Erie before he can reach Iroquois lands. His 6,000 are outnumbered by almost 10,000 Iroquois but he scores are convincing victory losing less than 600 men to almost 3000 Iroquois losses. Quite oddly, despite the fact that he is renowned as one of the greatest explorers in all of Spain, it appears that this battle has disoriented him and he admits to having to begin again his forward march. In the same month, Cortes captures Onondaga and moves for Oswego.

Further west, Loaisa discovers the sighting of land in the Trobriand Islands. The island is named Rabaul.

Back in Europe, Prussia agrees peace with England by paying 172D.

March

There is much fighting in North America as Cortes is caught with 7,300 troops in Onondaga against 9,700 Iroquois warriors. He is victorious but loses over 2,400 men to only half the number of Iroquois losses. He also lost his way.

Meanwhile Vitoria is caught in Oswego and is outnumbered nearly 3:1. He retreats to Adirondak.

De Soto arrives in Shenandoah and drives off the retreating Iroquois with few losses. He assaults immediately.

We send colonists to Azuay. Get me that gold!!!

April

The peasants in Munster revolt but are defeated by an army from Holland. I doubt that it will be too long before they forget how convincingly they were crushed.

Cortes inflicts another defeat on Iroquois in Onondaga where he defeats a force of twice the size with losses of just over 1,100 to little over 1,700 Iroquois losses. With another victory such as that, he will have been defeated.

De Soto captures Shenandoah with the loss of nearly 800 men. He moves for Tuscarora.

Further west, Loaisa discovers more land from Viliaz strait. I wonder if there will be any gold there?

May

De Soto changes plans and moves directly for the Iroquois capital in Mohawk. Cortes inflicts another defeat on Iroquois losing no men to over 100 Iroquois. Hardly a crushing victory but a win is a win.

Morocco have the temerity to declare war on the mighty empire of Ulmo and his servant, Charles, King of Spain, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and Lord of New Spain. Our allies support us with the exception of Wurtemberg. I do not feel any great desire to readmit the filthy Protestant German Pigs back into our alliance.

June

Rebels in Milan revolt and gain the support of the garrison in the city. Meanwhile, both Cortes and De Soto arrive in Mohawk and capture the village after immediately assaulting it. They extract the provinces of Onondada and Shenandoah plus 208D from the Chief of the Iroquois tribes.

In Africa, Morocco besieges Orania but with our war in the west finished, we are able to concentrate on the Moroccans and rebels in Milan. Morocco's first assault in Orania fails as hunger starts to take it's toll on the large 40k force they have in the province. We are busy, in the meantime, raising troops in Sierra Nevada and cannon in Helvetia.

July

Rebels rise up in Oporto. This is getting a little tiresome. Meanwhile, Loaisa dies before he finishes his work. The route to China is still closed to us.

August

We defeat rebels in Milan and lay siege to the city. Meanwhile, more troops are raised in Northern Spain to deal with the Oporto rebels.

There is also news of war in the east as Persia declares war on Iraq and is supported by Georgia.

September

Colonists are send to Fox as news arrives of the establishment of a colony in Yukon and the expansion of the one in Azuay. In Africa, besieging troops have been reinforced to nearly 50,000 and a second assault against 9,300 defenders is made. This assault is also repulsed.

October

We start a siege in Morocco but Naples landed forces before us so take command of this. We send some troops on to Toubkal. More troops are embarked from Sierra Nevada.

Colonists are send to Wisconsin.

November

Missouri, Kentucky and Yucatan are cleared of natives.

December

Around 5000 infantry supported by 60 cannon arrive in Toubkal to meet 11,000 Moroccan infantry. They are driven off with losses of three times our own.

A valuable mineral vein is discovered in our lands (+500D) and the money from this is used to expand our fortifications in Canaries, Leon, Asturias and Galicia.

We recapture Milan from the rebels just in time to collect the annual taxes. In Oporto, rebels are beaten by troops raised in Northern Spain.

To the north, Prussia pays 181D to Teutonic Order for peace and agrees a white peace with Hanseatic League.

1527

January

New year greets us with news of another turncoat nation, Sweden, declaring for the Protestant cause. They will be brought back later. Tax income is used to fortify Zacatecas and Michoagan and to appoint Chief Judges for Castille and Andalusia.

We discover Nicaragua, Alleghany and Iowa and natives are killed although De Soto is foolish enough to get involved to closely and is killed himself.

Europe is surprised to hear that England has claimed the province of Caux from France in a peace agreement. Aulë clearly has been watching me of late and has learned well how to deal with Manwë.

February

Morocco is captured and Naples make a private settlement with Morocco. This is now getting to be a little awkward.

March

Colonists are sent to Azuay in what we hope to be the final such expeditions.

Meanwhile, smaller immortals decide that we are preoccupied when Baden - supported by Palatinat and Kleves - declares war on us. They will find out, to their cost, that this is never the case. Our allies join us all.

Over 10,000 returning Moroccans attack our siege force in Toubkal of 4,400 men and 60 cannon. We are sent in full retreat losing over 1,600 to less than 600 Moroccans. This could be a little costly. Curse those Neapolitans for their treachery.

Nevertheless, in Munster, Spanish forces are able to acquit themselves with the almost total annihilation of the Kleves army

April

The Palatinat begin a siege in Alsace and Baden do the same in Helvetia but both forces are attacked by Austria.

In Africa, Morocco, for some reason, offers a white peace. We agree, with honours even, that it would make sense to stop the unnecessary bloodshed. We will return when it is necessary.

We defeat Kleves again in their home province and begin a siege of Düsseldorf.

May

Major breakthrough as we now develop early pistols (Land Tech 6)

We defeat recruit army in Pfalz and besiege Mainz while in the west we establish a colony on the Fiji Islands.

June

Colony established in Fox.

July

Walls of Dusseldorf weaken and we assault. It falls quickly and Kleves pays us 60D for peace. We win a battle against the Palatinat in Alsace.

August

We are successful in our objective to keep Milan (+20) but fail to remember that the Venetian Doge needed a Spanish wife (-1)

Pizarro boards Saavedra Cerón's fleet for Rabaul as our colony in Wisconsin is inauguarated.

September

Peasants in Nice revolt and we will be forced to ship in troops to put them down.

We are informed that we must keep Milan and also agree to try to discover Tianjin and to have a Royal Marriage with Portugal.

Our attempt to expand our colony in Azuay fails so more colonists are sent.

We begin a siege of Baden and recover 66D from Palatinat for peace. Troops there are returned to Artois where 5000 reinforcements are built.

And there, my followers, I must leave you for other matters of great urgency. I will return to my tale very shortly. In the meantime, I would be a little partial to lamb or beef next time. I never was much a fan of eating my fish seeing as they do inhabit my domains. I will not name the person responsible for he knows who he is.
