Yes, I know the title is click-bait, sorry for that ;-)
Currently I see several problems with space ports:
1. They go down instantly. In the mid-game I don't even have to worry about my fleet attacking them, I know that my doomstack will clean a system with 3 T6-Ports on agressive stance in about 30 seconds. Without losses. This makes it next to impossible to defend them (also applies to defense stations).
2. They take forever to build, repair and upgrade ships.
3. The strategic resources are next to meaningless. +10% on ship HPs is nice, if you get it for free. But in my opinion it's too weak for a strategic resource and I'd like to see wars which are just about getting hold of one of them... which would only happen if they would provide a major advantage.
My suggestions:
1. New shield, armor and weapon techs should give players new modules to place them into their space stations. In my opinion a fully equipped space station should be a threat to large fleets (and expensive).
To bring these stations down without major losses one would use a new type of ship: the siege vessels. They have about the size of a cruiser and are equipped with a single gigantic weapon. The accuracy is pretty much zero, it can't hit anything that moves. It's only designed to destroy enemy stations (and maybe for bombardment). Of course these vessels require the protection of the fleet, while they slowly tear down the enemies shields and armor.
This also solves another problem. If I want to besiege three enemy stations at the same time and defend my own space against invaders I have to split my fleet up. This would reduce the usability of doom-stacks.
Also I'd like the option to completely strip all the weapons from a station (or tell it to surrender). The enemy wouldn't attack it and would be able to use it to build his own ships while he blockades/controls the planet. But the station would survive the war.
2. Instead of the 4 different modules which make the 4 different ship sizes fast/cheaper to build I think there should be different levels of yard complexes. Without the first one a station would have a hard time to even produce corvettes, but with the last one it could produce 8 Battleships simultanously or upgrade a 500-points-fleet in 6 months. I think that it makes way more sense for an Empire to locate its main production lines at one point instead of spreading them all over the place where they are hard to defend.
3. Double or tripple the effect of each strategic resource module. As I said I think they should make an impact that could be recognized. I would like to see a war for them. Or for the empire who controls one (or several) of them to be a major player in trade/politics, just because it has a monopol. And it would also give a little more character to the other empires. Instead of "the religious penguins" it would be "the religious penguins who have the super-shields and are pretty bitchy about it".
