Materialists' bonus: Some 50-100 mineral as a reward for each crystalline entity fleet destroyed? For influence. Given that you can beat their fleets when 100 minerals are your monthly income, trading INF for that is not a bonus that could be appealing.
Instantly survey systems with crystals for 30 energy? Why would anyone do that ever and remove survey experience and anomaly discovery chance from science ships?
Pacifists and Xenophiles get decent bonuse but others - that's useless.
Mining drones - 50 energy credits for fleet?

IMO the only way to make research of spaceborne aliens worth it is to add some permanent bonuses, like +5% of something with some ethics getting more thrifty results from each type of spacefarers.
