I think you would agree with me if I say that space combat in Stellaris is quite weak part of the game. Lack of proper controls over fight, against-logic behavior of ships, dominance of doomstacks..

So I've been thinking what can be done about it without changing or complicating game too much. I think I've found possible solution.

How combat works now? Two stacks of ships reach engage distance then start moving towards each other until they reach melee distance (even if they are artillery ships), picking and shooting targets they consider primary threat (like mining and research stations) while moving. And once they are in combat they cannot retreat in proper way (even from space ports and mines). And yes, there is only one fleet for each side so ships could benefit from single high level admiral they have.

What do I propose to make life better?
  • Admiral should be affecting all your fleets in system, and if multiple admirals present in system, player must have an option to select active one. This should make keeping multiple fleets more appealing to player.
  • Rework for combat fleet binding mechanics. Fleets in combat should be able to move freely unless faster or equal speed enemy fleet binds them. Two bonded fleets (let's call them Aggressor and Defender) should behave like fleets does now. When Aggr to Def ship ratio falls lower then certain number or Aggr looses speed advantage then binding is broken. Also another fleet can bind Aggr, letting Def to break free.
  • Fleets should have selection of behavior patterns. Intercept and bind, bulk force approach, distance artillery support, keep safe distance.
  • Player should be able to prioritize targets and has control over focus fire/fire spread. Self-explanatory. But just in case: attack priorities like ship classes, stations, fortresses and space ports, spread/focused fire switch, and option to prioritize specific station or ship class by clicking on it.

I believe those changes are pretty minor yet could put more fun into space combat aspect of Stellaris.
