So I've heard recently that EU4 is going to have updates related to Southeast Asia, and as someone from that area and with some knowledge of its history; I'd like to contribute a fair share of ideas.

  1. Srivijaya
    1. What is Srivijaya? Srivijaya was a large thalassocratic empire based in Sumatra and later the Malay Peninsula that ruled over massive portions of Southeast Asia, including parts of modern day Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and of course the tiny nations(Brunei, Singapore, Timor), and even reached as far out as India and Madagascar. It was conquered by the Indian Chola Empire, and later the Majapahit Empire. Its original capital was in Palembang, but eventually moved it to Singapore. When Singapore was conquered by Majapahit, the dynasty of Srivijaya would escape and found Malacca, which itself is a nation in EU4's 1444 start.
    2. Formable Nation. I believe it should be a formable nation, separate from the Malaya formable nation; which will involve a unique mission and decision for the nations of East Indies. It should require all provinces in Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula to be formed; and the nation that forms it must be of either the Malay or Southeast Asian culture groups. The decision and mission to form it should be something similar to Restore Al-Andalus for Andalusia, and would be Restore Srivijaya. Srivijaya would have permanent claims over large portions of Southeast Asia, particularly Indochina, Sumatra, Malaya, and Java. It should not be formable by Majapahit, which had been its conqueror; nor Brunei, which we will get into later.
    3. Unique Missions. Srivijaya would have a unique mission tree, emphasizing a wide strategy gameplay. Some ideas include:
      1. Redirect Trade to Srivijaya.
        1. Requirements. Have at least 20 light ships privateering any trade node.
        2. Description. Once, our ships dominated the seas and brought to our kingdom all the riches in the world. With our empire reclaimed, let us once more become the center of the world so that we may consolidate its riches.
        3. Effects. +50% trade steering
      2. End Majapahit.
        1. Requirements. Own all provinces in Java and Majapahit does not exist.
        2. Description. Once, our nation reigned supreme over the archipelago for centuries. And we would have ruled for centuries more, were it not for the upstart kings of Majapahit. We must avenge our ancestors, and conquer the usurpers like they did us.
        3. Effects. Gain permanent claims over Borneo, the Philippines, the Lesser Sunda Islands, the Moluccas, and Sulawesi.
      3. Colonize the West.
        1. Requirements. Colonize any province in Africa.
        2. Description. Our people have spread far and wide across the archipelago, even sailing to lands as far as Africa. Now with our empire reclaimed, it is time to resume our expansion.
        3. Effects. Gain claims in Madagascar.
    4. Srivijayan Empire Ideas.
      1. Traditions.
        1. + 20% trade steering
        2. + 1 merchant
      2. Lords of Water.
        1. -20% naval maintenance modifier
        2. +20% naval force limit modifier
      3. Far and Wide.
        1. Gain 1 colonist.
      4. Lords of the Archipelago.
        1. +1 diplomatic reputation
        2. -50% vassal liberty desire
      5. Radiant Excellence.
        1. +1 yearly prestige
      6. Shining Victory.
        1. -25% unjustified demands.
      7. Settle the Islands.
        1. +20% global settler increase
      8. Ambitions.
        1. +1 yearly naval tradition
    5. Successors of Srivijaya. Four nations in particular should be given advantages to forming Srivijaya, as they could be cited as Srivijaya's successors. They would have unique mission trees to form Srivijaya. These nations are as follows: Ayuthayya, Malacca, Johor, and Palembang.
  2. Majapahit
    1. Majapahit in the game. Majapahit in the game starts out as as a medium sized empire controlling about half of Java. It doesn't really have that many starting diplomatic relations.
    2. Majapahit in history. Majapahit was once a massive empire that dominated maritime Southeast Asia, conquering Srivijaya and pretty much everything else. By the time of EU4's start year however, it was already in rapid decline as all its vassals across Sumatra, Borneo, Malaya, etc. were all converting to Islam and no longer recognized their Hindu overlords, and thus began to secede one by one; until Majapahit itself was taken over from the inside by Islam. Before this, Majapahit was already unstable as its last emperor Hayam Wuruk divided it among his sons; and they basically fought each other for the throne.
    3. Cores. Representative of Majapahit in decline, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sulawesi, The Moluccas, Papua, the Philippines, and some portions of southern Thailand should have Majapahit cores which will expire in 150 years; giving Majapahit until then a CB on everyone in that general area. Majapahit will not have cores in Sunda, because it did not conquer Sunda because of an incident regarding Gajah Mada and the Sundanese royal family.
    4. Diplomatic Relations. Palembang should either be a part of or a vassal of Majapahit. Every other nation that was once part of Majapahit should have some initial hostility towards it, especially the Muslim nations. Malacca, Brunei, and Ayuthayya in particular should have the Was at war modifier, and possibly the Historical Rivalmodifier. Malacca especially should have the Historical Rival modifier. It should be made very hard for Majapahit to find allies among its former vassals.
      1. Modifier. I suggest some sort of modifier that makes all Southeast Asian nations hostile to Majapahit until a mission is completed. This modifier should be something like Former Empire or something, which will last until either the United Java or Dowry to Malacca event triggers.
    5. Events.
      1. Unite Java. After the completion of the Mend Sundanese Relations mission, the player will be given the option to either accept Sunda as a vassal or remove the Former Empire modifier early.
      2. War of Succession. In 1468, a Majapahit prince overthrew the reigning king. An event depicting Prince Kertabhumi's rebellion should fire around that time.
      3. Dowry to Malacca. Historically, Majapahit gave up Indragiri and Siantan to Malacca as a dowry for the marriage of a Majapahit princess and the Sultan of Malacca. The Dowry to Malacca event will give the player the option for a royal marriage with Malacca, which will remove the Dowry to Malacca modifier but increase unrest and decrease stability.
      4. Muslim Merchants. Ketabhumi managed to stabilize the situation historically depicted in Dowry to Malacca by allying with Muslim merchants. The player should similarly be presented with the option to either ally with Muslim merchants which will increase stability and decrease unrest but however lead to the Rise of Demak event, or reject them which will decrease trade power and deteriorate relations with Muslim nations.
      5. Rise of Demak. Historically, Majapahit finally fell from the inside as Islamic revolutionaries took over Java and established Demak while the Majapahit royal family fled to Bali and continued the kingdom there. The event should present the player with the option to either convert to Islam and become Demak, or 20,000 Demak Separatists will rise up in Demak.
    6. Unique Missions.Majapahit should have a unique mission tree, which will follow its return to glory or something like that. Some ideas include:
      1. Mend Sundanese relations.
        1. Requirements. Sunda is ally of and has at least 190 opinion of Java or Sunda does not exist.
        2. Description. Once our two kingdoms were meant to unite, until the great Gajah Mada wronged the Sundanese royals in an act of aggression. Our humble king, Hayam Wuruk humbly apologized; but the damage was already done and our two kingdoms never united. Now as our kingdom declines further, we may need their help more than ever before.
        3. Effect. +20 prestige and permanent claims on the rest of Sunda.
      2. Unite Java.
        1. Requirements. All of Java is controlled by Majapahit or a vassal.
        2. Description. With our relations mended, we may now unite our kingdoms as they were meant to be; and face tomorrow together.
        3. Effect. Subject Liberty Desire -50%.
      3. Various Conquest Missions:
        1. Conquer Borneo
        2. Conquer Sumatra
        3. Conquer Malay Peninsula
        4. Conquer Sulawesi
        5. Conquer Moluccas
        6. Conquer the Philippines
    7. Ideas. Don't really know what to change about the ideas tbh.
  3. The Bruneian Empire
    1. Brunei in the game. Brunei controls half of Borneo and Palawan, and is a Malayan Sultanate. It guarantees the independence of Sulu and Manila.
    2. Brunei historically. At its height, the Bruneian Empire controlled all of Borneo, Palawan, Taytay, Mindoro, Manila, and Zamboanga. It did not simply guarantee the independence of Sulu and Manila, as both were practically Bruneian vassals. Sulu was especially close to the Bruneian Empire, while Manila was made a vassal out of conquest.
    3. Diplomatic Relations. Sulu should be a vassal of Brunei at the 1444 start, and Manila a vassal in 1500. Malacca, and Sulu if released, would be a historical ally. Tondo would be a historical rival.
    4. Unique Missions. Some ideas for Brunei's unique missions include:
      1. Establish Selurong.
        1. Requirements. Manila is owned by Brunei or a vassal of Brunei.
        2. Description. To the north, the House of Soliman in Manila pledges loyalty to our kingdom. In exchange for rulership over Manila, they have asked that we liberate their kingdom from the Tagalogs.
        3. Effect. Gain +1 merchant and claims over the Philippines.
      2. Conquer Kutai.
        1. Requirements. All provinces in Kutai are owned by Brunei and Kutai does not exist.
        2. Description. We are the rulers of the island, yet the pagans of Kutai claim sovereignty. It is time we show them who alone rules the island.
        3. Effect. Gain 1 colonist.(to colonize Kalimantan)
      3. Rule Kalimantan.
        1. Requirements. All provinces in Kalimantan are owned by Brunei or a vassal of Brunei.
        2. Description. The island has been named for is, and it is for us to rule. Let us ensure that the datos of the south understand this.
        3. Effect. -50% Liberty Desire in Vassals
    5. Events.
      1. Pearl of the Orient. According to legend, Manila was established as Seludong by Brunei in 1500. While this is unlikely, it may signify the year that Manila became a vassal of the Bruneian Empire. With this event, the player would be offered the option to accept Manila as a vassal.
      2. Cockfight. From 1660 to 1673, a civil war was fought in Brunei due to a dispute over the result of a cockfight(basically forcing two roosters to fight each other) between two princes. The crown prince lost and murdered the other prince. The end result was the decline of the Bruneian Empire and what is Jesselton and Lehad Datu being given to Sulu. This cockfight event should fire in 1660, which will give players the option to either punish the crown prince for murder or do nothing. If the crown prince is punished, then the heir will die and Brunei will lose 1000 gold to compensate the family of the murdered prince. If nothing is done, then there will be no mentioned effect; however, it will be followed immediately by the event Brunei Civil War.
      3. Brunei Civil War. The ruling sultan is murdered, and replaced by the father of the murdered prince. Historically, the Sultanate of Sulu helped the grandson of the former sultan overthrow the usurper in exchange for Sabah(Jesselton and Lehad Datu). Similarly, the player should be given the option to either give Sulu a province or two or it will declare war on Brunei in support of the rebel faction.
  4. Bangsamoro
    1. What is Bangsamoro? Bangsamoro is "Bangsa Moro" or "Moro Nation", which consists of the people who historically made up the Sulu, Maguindanao, and Lanao Sultanates. Historically, it was less a country and more an alliance of countries; but in more recent decades, it has formed a national identity among the Moro peoples, of which I personally identify with.
    2. Bangsamoro Culture. The Bangsamoro culture have a culture separate from that of Filipinos, and thus should be separate from the Filipino culture in game. Provinces that start out with Bangsamoro culture should include Palawan, Taytay, Maguindanao, and Lanao.
    3. Formable/Revolter Nation. Bangsamoro should be formable by any nation of Bangsamoro culture, after owning the core provinces of Lanao, Maguindanao, and Sulu. Alternatively, Bangsamoro could revolt from the owner of these provinces if neither Sulu, Lanao, nor Maguindano currently exist.
    4. Unique Missions.
      1. Raid the Seas.
        1. Requirements. Privateer the Philippine trade node.
        2. Description. Our enemies seek to subjugate us using funds they have acquired through trade in the sea. Do they not know who rules the seas their merchants sail through? We must punch holes in their pockets, and make full our own to guarantee our independence.
        3. Effects. Gain the Raiders of the Sulu Sea modifier, increasing Privateer Efficiency by 50% until the end of the game.
      2. Pacify the Visayans.
        1. Requirements. All provinces in the Visayas region owned by Bangsamoro.
        2. Description. There is no doubt that the infidels of Visayas and their masters seek to drive us from our homes and take those which have been meant for our children. We must launch a pre-emptive strike, and ensure that this never happens.
        3. Effect. Gain the Pacified Visayans modifier, increasing embargo efficiency for 100 years by 50%.
      3. Take Selurong.
        1. Requirements. Manila owned by Bangsamoro or Brunei. If owned by Brunei, Brunei must be an ally, vassal, or overlord of Bangsamoro.
        2. Description. Established by our brethren in the south, Selurong is the pearl of the orient; one of the most valuable ports in the region. We must ensure that it is rightfully ruled by either us or our brethren.
        3. Effect. +1 yearly prestige.
    5. Bangsamoro Ideas.
      1. Traditions.
        1. + 20% trade steering
        2. + 10% infantry combat ability
      2. Bastion of Islam.
        1. +30% Fort Defense
      3. Homeland of the People.
        1. +10% goods modifier
      4. Lanongs and Garays.
        1. +1 naval leader maneuver
      5. To victory or martyrdom.
        1. +30% Morale of Armies
      6. Moro Pirates.
        1. +10% embargo efficiency
        2. +25% Privateer Efficiency
      7. Guerrilla Warfare.
        1. - 0.02% Monthly War Exhaustion
      8. Ambitions.
        1. +25% unjustified demands
    6. Lanao
      1. Lanao in the game. Lanao is a one province revolter nation, and the name of a province.
      2. Lanao historically. Lanao is a part of Bangsamoro. Compared to the game province Lanao, the map of historical Lanao is a bit more complex; and should be split into three portions: Iligan, Lanao, and Cagayan de Oro. In game, it seems Lanao has been conquered by Spain by 1821; however this is simply not true, as Lanao maintained independence until the end of the 19th century, when the Americans arrived. In truth, the in game province of Lanao consists of Lanao itself, Iligan, and Cagayan de Oro. Lanao itself was independent, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro became Spanish provinces. This just really bugs me because my ancestors come from the Sultanate of Lanao, which resisted Western imperialism to a point that Spain could never conquer them. The Americans were a different story.
  5. League of the Indies
    1. What is the League of the Indies? The League of the Indies was a Pan-Asian alliance of nations across India and Southeast Asia, supported by the Ottoman Empire in a war against the Portugese Empire.
    2. My suggestion. I'm not really sure what to do with this, because there's not a lot of info on it besides the War of the the League of the Indies, and it could be replicated with a coalition. Still, it seems like an interesting concept that could be explored further.

Some things I'd like to mention:

The idea Lords of Water is in reference to an Extra Credits : Extra History Video on YouTube about Srivijaya, Mataram, and Majapahit; where the narrator refers to the Srivijayan Empire as Lords of Water.

The ideas Radiant Excellence and Shining Victory refer to the possible translations of the name "Srivijaya", or Sri Vijaya; which is radiant/shining victory/excellence.

The ideas Homeland of the People, Bastion of Islam, and To victory or martyrdom are all lyrics of a Bangsamoro nationalist song called the Bangsamoro Hymn. You can find it on YouTube, uploaded by some channel with the name of Jun Uka. If you decide to check it out, I warn you that neither the audio quality nor the video editing are very good; though the song itself is pretty catchy, for me at least.

Lanongs were large and fast warships armed with cannons used by the Maranao people in raids against the Spaniards. Garays were somewhat smaller, and often made up massive fleets with lanong flagships.

Nice suggestions! The only tiny nitpicks I have are that the missions for Majapahit and Srivijaya are a bit iffy; a lot of Majapahit’s missions are just “Conquer X Region,” and in my opinion, Srivijaya’s mission to colonize Africa is a bit too alt-history. On the gameplay side of things, I feel Bangsomoro is a great idea, but it’s just way too easy to form. Besides that though, you have some really great ideas. I hope you post more suggestions in the near future!

Japan has a mission to colonize California, Britain has a mission to become Emperor, etc. Alt history isn’t a problem, in fact, EU4 as a game is all about alt history

EDIT: Also there’s historical evidence that Sirivjaya exercised some degree of control over Madagascar. Ever wonder why Malagasy is an Austronesian language, not a Bantu one?

Yeah, I was thinking maybe Bangsamoro should be kinda like nations like Algeria; which have a core in the provinces and will revolt from the owner later on, or the owner form Bangsamoro in place of itself.
