How can your earn economic VPs? I am having a negative score as Persia right now, despite having monopoly in my own COT and 5 merchants in a couple of others. Does colonies and TPs have something to do with it (I have none)?

You want my advice? Forget about economic VPs. Just go for military and/or diplomatic. One who conquers the world will beat one who builds colonies any day.

Yes, I do get the impression that the thing's kind of stupid. I mean, I passed twenty years with France building up trade, factories, improving my level through investment, and all for what? I didn't get half the points I got than those that I earned through a six months war after which I annexed Palatinat (or whatever its name in English). I'm sure in real history there must have been other ways for non-colonizing countries to make money like mushrooms.

I heartily disagree with the notion that economic VP's are inconsequential for the game! In my experience economic VP's are just as important if not more so than the military VP's. One thing however is also true, if you pursue an active military strategy, you will also gain economic VP's because more COT's means more traders, which in turn means better trade.

The problem is that the economic VPs ar enot well-balanced.
You can win using only the VPs if you are a colonial emprie. (in my game SPain has 2000 VPs in the economic, mainly due to the discoveries and establishment). But if you are a country that do not aim to colonize you can't rely on the Economic point to win.

Don't discount economic VPs entirely: my warmonger Russia currently has more VPs from pure economy (not even counting discoveries/establishments) than second-place Spain has in total :D
