The sound still skips with the music off. It's like a microsecond skip every couple of seconds.

Edit: I think it could be related to the ambient volume option. Once I turned that off I haven't had any audio skips.

Edit 2: Scratch that, the micro-skipping is still there.

do you get it in other games? try running an app called 'latencymon'. press 'start monitor', and see what your highest DPC time is (while running and not running the game). also you can check the 'drivers' tab, and sort by highest execution (ms). they should all be well below 1ms (99.9+% below 0.25ms). if you need to paste info to this forum, there is a 'stats' tab with a text summary.

and what are your system specs? might try posting more detailed bug reports in future :\

I didn't bother with specs.

you also didn't bother with latencymon, i suppose. however i've seen issues with hd/5.1 drivers for audio cards in various games, but only the built-in realtek with early vista/win drivers, not updated. other than that. i'm seeing a lot of issues with nvidia cards lately. not sure if related or just anecdotal.

so i can't say... figure it out...

edit: i can tell you it's not cpu. i have a i5-3570k. might be motherboard, sound, of gfx card. i'd put the money on shoddy nvidia drivers.

Are there any news on this problem?
I have the same issue with stuttering sound since game release and none of the recent patches has brought any improvement for me. ;(

I have no problems with any other game and of course my drivers are all up-to-date.

Has the issue been fixed for most of you guys (at least the patch notes say that the issue should have been fixed)?

Thanks for the quick reply.
Sorry, I thought that my actual specs were not relevant for the question, since this is such a general error about which many players (with quite different hardware) complained.
But of course I'll gladly provide any information that is needed. :)

My specs are:

Intel Core i5-2500K
16 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 670 graphics cards
Asus Xonar D1 sound card
Win 8.1 64 Bit
(all drivers are updated to their latest version, of course)

As I said - I have absolutely no problems with any other games (and I play a lot of stuff ^^). This is the first time ever that I experience this kind of sound / audio stuttering in a game. However, I have this problem since release and (although the patch notes say otherwise) it has not improved for me a little bit since then.

Any help would greatly be appreciated, because this issue is so annoying that it actually keeps me from playing this great game.

Do you have an internal sound card on your motherboard?
Have you tried to plug your speakers into this?

I had a similar problem with my Auzentech Prelude and had to take it offline, since then I switched to my build-in and had no problems.

Yes, I have an internal sound card.
But frankly, it is no valid option for me to switch from my Asus Xonar to onboard sound just for this single game.
Switching to onboard sound would mean that I had to change BIOS settings (because it is currently deactivated) and probably install new drivers to use it.
And I don't want to mess with my drivers and my system because - aside from this particular game - everything else runs absolutely fine and flawless right now. And you know the saying - never change a running system.

It's so very disappointing... I bought the deluxe edition of Cities: Skylines right after release, stopped playing after a couple of hours (because of this annoying sound bug), and really hoped that the developers would fix this issue so that I could continue playing. But now, it's five months since release and I still cannot play this game. Very sad... ;(

Looks like you all have asus xonar sound cards. Maybe try uninstalling those drivers and downloading the latest from asus and see if it cures the issue. Make sure to uninstall as it should remove old config files which may affect new drivers.

Thanks for your reply. Asus xonar sound card ? When typing dxdiag, it says realtek high definition audio on the sound menu. I also use logitech speakers with headphones (QC 25) connected on them.

Asus uses other manufacturer's chips and puts a twist on them. You can try uninstalling the Asus audio driver and software and installing generic realtek drivers and see if that helps. But Asus is notorious for custom chips that are problematic. They've matured a lot over the past few years. but can still have odd issues.

But I'd recommend uninstalling the Asus audio software/drivers and install latest if you haven't done so already. Or just uninstall and use windows default audio drives from windows update for a test.

BTW, it seems you have an Asus Sonic Master 7.1 surround card. Sounds newer than Xonar, but sounds custom made for Asus.

It should be under add/remove programs (uninstall programs).

https://www.asus.com/us/Desktops/ROG_G20AJ/

Look under specifications for details on audio device.

Hey guys, just wanted to tell you that the issue is finally (almost) fixed for me.
Basically, I did two things. Unfortunately, I am not quite sure which one of them did the trick:

(i) First of all I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. (no problems at all after upgrading, all games run flawless)
(ii) After that, I uninstalled the official ASUS drivers (which were still over a year old because apparently ASUS refuses to publish new drivers) and installed the unified Xonar drivers: http://maxedtech.com/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/

Now, after doing these two things, there are only minor sporadic stutters now and then left, but most of the time the game runs fine.
Hopefully this information helps the ones of you who still experience the audio stuttering.

These seem to be unofficial drivers. But there seems to be no updates even from C-Media, which Asus uses, Since 2013. It's the CMI-8788 chipset. A lot of people use it, but seems to be abandoned for newer chips and may not see updates.

http://www.cmedia.com.tw/EN/DownloadCenter_Detail2/Serno-118/pserno-0/dtype-ALL.html

Martin over at MaxedTech says:

The issue with the sound stuttering in chrome has to do with “Hardware acceleration” i had the same issue in Windows 7 for my setup.
Try turning that off, its down in the bottom of the advanced settings.

Did you by chance uninstall the audio drivers and use windows update to install the default audio drivers? Maybe they'll work better. Or maybe you just need to disable the HW accel with the original drivers if possible?

Luckily Maxed Tech is supporting the drivers as that CMI8788 chipset seems abandonware now. It sucks, it sounds like they want everyone to upgrade to newer cards so they can pocket more dough.

i can confirm that installing the Unified Xonar Drivers (Low DPC latency config) on win 8.1 has fixed the issue for me, thanks for the link, it's brilliant!

Okay, sorry for being a beotian. I just recall my pc spec :

Asus G20
Intel Core i7-4790 3.6 ghz
8 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 graphics cards (4 GB memory)
Win 8.1 64 Bit
(drivers updated ; audio realteck drivers)

Multimedia cards :
Intel Corporation 9 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller
NVIDIA Corporation GM204 High Definition Audio Controller

Now let's suppose there is a "dpc latency" problem detected by dpc latency checker, which steps to follow ?
