I have the Tholian's Rest quest to retrieve the emperor's body but it is located in a landmark in a sector owned by the Chin Til'Trz whom I am allied with. We have open borders but I can't enter the landmark without declaring war. Also can't trade for the sector because it would split their sectors.

What are my options?

would the sectors adjacent to the landmark bypass the splitting the sectors problem? can you make a forward base on one of them peacefully? would the ally accept the trade of a sector for the landmark? i do mean you gifting the sector and then buying the landmark from them.

Yes, I could buy the edge sector and then buy for the one with the landmark but that would cost a lot more energy than I have.

Do you mean creating a forward base and trading that for the sector? Can you trade away forward bases?

sadly no, trading sectors isn't an option (for now? yet? *nudges Paradox*) gotta go the long way around and buy the sector with energy. or cosmite. or a mix or the two resources.

and i did not mean buying the landmark and the other sector of the ally, i mean make a forward base on an neighboring neutral sector, gift that to the ally and then buy the landmark from them. they'd have a forward base sector that would connect their edge sector to their territory and you get the landmark

Ah, I see. That would save me from buying two sectors.

I don't think you actually need to.
If I recall correctly, just open the Landmark's Sector Analysis screen and you should be able to do what you need.

If you mean the screen that pops up when you click on the landmark, the option to retrieve the body displays a popup when you click it that says it requires an army. I have an army on the sector, but not on top of the landmark itself because it would break the alliance.

Interestingly, I restarted the scenario and I don't remember this the first time (though it was probably displayed and I missed it), the quest info when you first get it says you can either take it over forcefully or ally with them to get access to the tomb. But I was allied with them on the first run through. This may actually be a quest bug.

There are two paths that require access to the tomb. You were trying the less friendly one.
However, you might still be able to buy the landmark off them when you are in an alliance.

A thought becoming an ally was the friendly way. On this second run through, I'll have to pay closer attention to the quest lines but it seemed to me that if I didn't take it by force, as long as I was allied with them the quest would be completable (since I can't enter the landmark in their sector).

The second time around it worked. After we allied, the quest completed. Apparently this was a known bug in that quest that had been fixed but since I hadn't played in a long time, my existing save game from that scenario didn't get updated with the fix.

Thanks all. Also thanks to the devs for responding on the Steam forum regarding this issue.
