Symphonies Un-numbered in an Unknown Key

Sing!
So many songs, so many symphonies
Creating a harmony of chaos
Howling across space
Screaming past the speed of light
Breaking barriers
Of physics communication and understanding

Alien flocks flap their wings
Sing their unknown songs
And a breeze of hurricanes whisper past
Wrecking whatever they find
Creating and recreating what they pass
Destroying and building anew
As they sing with us in screeching harmony

Who can understand this song?
We know the words the tune and the harmony
But the song itself makes no sense you see
For it demands all, demands nothing
Promises survival and death in equal measure
As its screams softly
As we translate and understand the words
But do not understand the meaning

How can we build a mutual understanding
Without understanding?
How to accompany a song
When others are not even singing?
How can we fly together as a flock
When these flocks fly without wind, without wings?

And yet we must
Our songs of Survival requires both
Dissonance and harmony
And so we must become multitudes
A purposeful choir of chaos
Singing an infinite variety of melodies
Countering some, following others
Voices rising to meet the unknown song
Of the future
Whether it be death or destiny or both

Sing!

All we need now is to find a space Pikachu :D

As we gather a collection of creatures eclectic,
Our anticipation for such an event is electric.

I feel like the slaver empires are playing the same game but with different subjects

Some in our flock say
that to build a society on top of the backs of slaves
is the height of illogical
others look at our robots
and wonder.

--

In other news, let me recommend to you a game which swallowed my entire brain last week and that is responsible for the delay in posting, Suzerain.
It's part political and economic simulation, part rpg part interactive novel, where you are a president of a third world country during the cold war and facing a mountain of crisis.
Very enjoyable.

Cabinet Battle

Members of our flock
Seekers of knowledge, scientists,
You could have been anywhere in the universe right now
But you have opted to fly with us
And listen to our songs
As we debate the political winds that we shall fly
In the Saiiban Confederation
The issue flying before us is nothing less
Than the entire destiny and future of our Confederation
Which way shall we turn?
By which path shall we navigate the winds before us?

First up is Scientist Claws of Honeydew
From the newly founded National Prosperity Coalition

Listen to my song, my fellow scientists
For we firmly believe our faction should be the finalist
While others claim we have lost touch with the pursuit of knowledge
We answer to them that it takes energy credits to run a college
For to escape the cold iron grip of entropy
requires that we acquire sufficient energy
After all, how are our scientists supposed to pay attention
If to even run their experiments they have to get credit extensions?

And now for the other new song that joins our chorus,
Scientist Plume of Red of the Dominance Faction
Here to sing to us of the need for, as he calls it, direct action.

Greetings my fellow scientists, heed now my song
For if we but embrace our destiny our song will last long
Is it not clear that the Saiiban are better than all alternatives?
Our brains breed to at least twice the strength of others, and that’s conservative
Look at the universe that we find ourselves flying in!
Between short sighted mammals and hungry bugs, where can I even begin?
Clearly our superiority has been scientifically proven without a doubt
I mean, honestly, are we going to allow these illogical beings to just wander about?
It is time to spread our wings, rise up and make the galaxy ours!
Let us let our destiny fly as bright as the stars!

And now finally, our venerable leader, comes Plume of Maroon
To sing for our tradition of technological progress.

My fellow scientists, listen, we are in the middle
of a novel experiment whose data and answers are a riddle
Both our data and methods are entirely uncertain
And we must be careful or we mineswell drop the curtain
Since this is an experiment we can not test or retry
furthermore we must make up our hypothesis as we fly
Come now! Into the sky my feathers ascend
But we must remember this fact even past my end
To embrace science is to embrace uncertainty and ignorance
We know that the unknown future turns to hear the echo of our song
And we know that whatever tune the rushing passing present brings we must play along
Our destiny is not a scientific fact which we can discover
But rather a constant process of becoming what we uncover

As we lay our eggs we may imagine a thousands visions
Of our hatchlings future and their potential decisions
But the future is in a constant state of revision
And so we fly into the unknown dreaming, hoping, fearing
Building a present of a thousand permutations in a constant state of engineering
Adding our voice and hope that to the future it provides a contribution

I do not know what our destiny will be
But evolution teaches us survival is a problem with more than one solution
But its constant is the death of each generation to give birth to a new generation’s revolution
Time then, for me to say goodbye
And make room for our new choir of songs, clashing, harmonizing
Making it up as we go along.

It is very much a busy galaxy, but that being said, trust me, things are going to *really* ramp up in (I think) the update after the next one. The last set of updates before the next "census" post (updating on my status as of 2260) are going to be, shall we say, explosive.

Songs of the Precursors III: Living Death

A whisper blows in space
Burning the very air
Suffocating our mind
Killing all that is there

The whisper screams silently
Through the forest of the past
Wandering through the trees
Gnarled and bent and broken

The trees are gone, but echo still
Burned into a nothingness so vast
That it still echoes through the air.
A living void of what has passed
Beyond thought and beyond care.

The trees bones lie here still
A layer of living death
Lying like a chill blanket
Covering up and testifying
To lives echoed across lives
To deaths burned beyond death
To the memory of a thing wished forgotten
By those who remembered

By what right do we dig up this rude earth?
By what right do we dig up this crime?
It is past justice, past history, almost past time

And yet we believe still
That to learn and remember, for good or ill
Is to touch the terrible beauty of the sublime
To forget is death, life lies in the remembering

The whisper sings softly past
Amid the echoes of these bones
continues to murmur, not yet silent
In these fossils of the past, remembering
And we listen, sing, and know
No matter the price.

They are, much like us, apex predators, so some amount of menace is involved.

My internal head canon is that the difference between them that lead to the names are very clear to them its just our silly mammalian eyes and brains that don't notice the super obvious differences.

The promised explosive series of posts is still a few updates away, i forgot about one or two events that merit an update. Getting close tho.

I'd write a poem, but its a little past midnight in my time zone at the moment.

The Gravity of our Desire I: Say My Name

What will we give to know?
To understand the fundamental rules
Of the universe we seem to inhabit?
Our search for knowledge has become
A gravitational distortion
Pulling in everything on the horizon
Towards the center, acquiring more mass as we go

Will the mass of our knowledge gather infinitely?
Will it eventually reach a tipping point?
Will it cross a threshold, transforming, through its sheer density
Into new, exotic forms of matter, if ever so briefly, before
Exploding

Into a new universe of possibility?

Our talons itch to grasp the answers
Gathering everything before us
Into a mass
A black hole, our consciousness
Sucking everything into itself
No light escapes once it enters the eye
Instead it becomes a memory of a sight
Fading or growing with time

The Gravity of our Desire
Sings out, calls our name “Saiiban”
Pulling us in
Past the point of no return
Pulling our very world apart
Until all that is left are exotic particles best described
By theoretical physicists observing it all
From a safe remove

We go to the forbidden tree of scripture
As we we supposedly did long ago
As we did again, recently, deciding
That nothing is forbidden,
And we taste of the fruit
Sweet and sour with the taste of knowledge
And as we eat, take our fill,
we find a worm, boring through it
Cutting through the sphere
Of what we knew
Leaving holes in it
Gaps in what we thought was whole
Gaps, holes, calling out
Begging us to fill them
With our very selves

The Gravity of the Situation does not escape us
To be asked to give ourselves
To lose ourself into the horizon of the unknown future
Heeding the call of our names
Pulled inexorably to the center of the mystery
Who knows if we will come out of the other side?
Light does not escape the mystery of the unknown horizon
Of our future fate
The only way out, like the worm, is through
Worm our way through the fruit, taste its knowledge
Bitter and sweet, filling ourselves
Until we explode
into …...what?
The unknown calls our name.

We unfortunately have a bit before we continue the Baol, but with this update I can now finally begin the promised series of "explosive" updates and will actually get to continue playing the game (so far at least, 30 in game years feels like the limit of screenshots and "remember what happened" my brain can handle as I update.

To give you all a preview, I would suggest you look at Julius Caesar, Act 3, Scene 1, specifically Mark Antony's famous soliloquy.

Galactic Situation of the Saiiban Confederation in 2250, on the eve of First Saiiban - XT-489 Euthanization War

Sing!

Heed my song, my flock
I am Eyes of Orange
Flock leader, Lead Singer
Of Murder of Rickit
Our primary flock of starships
To which the protection of the egg of our future
is entrusted.

NwS2zdjXtHW48NjxJrh0s-pb8XatK7vKbfurIj8hgrk_QphqXMSjhca7PmVAYyLSjOMPieRnvGSUAERS76hvh7XHaaQAzpFbZzyq8nfu5lD16N32gPnYjEN7JfL4HKp2a9fMmmMs

Hear my song!
Of war expected, war predicted
Of a war inevitable, like entropy
From the moment we first heard
The discordant metal screams
Which demanded silence
Of us, of all organic life
When we first felt the echoes
Of the nuclear winds
Which gave the XT-489 Eliminators
First flight into the void.

I come here before you all,
to hear the song of judgement
The song of the future we heard
Has come
And I have done my best to answer
Matching some notes, missing others
As is inevitable in the chaotic system of systems
Which is interstellar war
A song we have not sung before
But which it was my task to sing

qBl6ouAHC5Cr63eoeHj6aSiOFMQ_ZT-DLUJQSdKZEWHdZSnmEGrGzBjnj788H_nS7zYg3ViHo6mv-Bk8K_VCC6ryT5RsgNhuwj3XxLYmozopkQQrMTBH4TY9hYgOU1m2OB9GroKX

Tensions between the XT-489 and the Saiiban were high from the moment of First Contact

Our enemies we not subtle
I cannot claim surprise in any respect
They let us know, from the first note
That their song would silence ours if sung in its full
And I am not ashamed of our preparations
Our proud flock of starships,
their laser claws and mass driver beaks ready
And our defensive bastions
Ready to spread their protective wings
To catch and block the razor winds of war

MCrnHMP-bMpdkBEYL_pL8mdLhQD-KMr0Ja3m335ePBNOfvL6u_muMchCTVlkkST7hLjNOpkscd2SY3Cj0hno0VxV8FyL7oiiXHBN5sryJ7xr_f9qU8CMQKhOEJ6XbfNStGNi2D-i

The theater of operations for the First Saiiban - XT-489 Euthanization War.
The first move of the XT-489 was to successfully capture the Saiiban Bastion at Vestallus shortly after war was declared.
The space station in Cador, built to defend the colony there, would be still be being upgraded by the start of hostilities.

We knew, we heard, we saw
The wind of our first war
Since we flew into the void
was blowing towards us
And I led our flock through it
Through its unknown drifts
To where we are now

And so now, heed my song
And judge what we may learn
And if I have fulfilled my duty.

Let me now resume my song
And tell of the opening movements
In this, our first symphony of war

As I sang before, I knew, we all knew,
that our foes would seek
to silence our song
and leave but echoes
And so the discordant chord which arose
Came as the exact opposite of a surprise
And yet, nonetheless,
the precise moment
When came it came at last
that long awaited cry
Was shocking to us

gu1xN7Jv-W2X9njs1gaoCI2obq58CeSHrn2KSO5GvDBilakKMVDs1ZFzq8vdPC_Ij_McSpyD-58SIXfOrb0IBtktpIg8vk2fclCjpvNodECK-b1vUE1Gz0dtQ8evqzpg3anqWd0f

When the XT-489 Eliminators declared war on 2249.04.18 it was not surprising, but it did catch the Saiiban by surprise

It came, when it came,
like a surprise snatch
on the nest in the night
By a well known enemy
a surprising chord progression
in the developing song
Even If not surprising
within the larger shape of the melody

As such, we were,
I confess,
at the moment when
the first notes of war rang out
not as ready as I would have hoped
Or planned for

Our primary two border systems
Vestallus and Ullus
We well defended by our defensive bastions
But our precious new colony, Foosh’ro, in Cador,
Had but recently built its defensive station
And it would not be up to its full might
When its part in the song came up
But that part of the song lies still for later

Most crucially,
our primary flock
Was at the moment
when the song of war broke out
In the middle of upgrades to our flock of ships
And a few of the planned members of the Murder
Had not yet taken flight
Furthermore
the flock was safely ensconced
in its Capital Nest
Where the cost of its flight during peace
Is less burdensome on our wings

o9EnnvSqFM-mNORXc9xTltjxEfUKM7hoTlswx0eYrHjmHzMwLko4jub94TY-GM3jIalBwTGnCIiBlHHVlONQsfAZEXAMY0DeLj6nEtaejD1C3NPDMe3MLoXk_ZuFe8PBw7XfXI0H

When the XT-489 began offensive operations immediately upon declaring war, the main Saiiban fleets where still in orbit of Sabak, undergoing refit and with a few ships still being constructed

To be clear,
My aim is not to criticize our policy
Of keeping our primary fleet
in our Capital system
But simply to point out
The inevitable strategic consequences
Of this particular choice
When fighting on the defensive

It took our flock,
Time to finish its upgrades
Time to finish preparing all the birds in the Murder
Time to fly through the voids of multiple systems
Time to catch the winds of multiple hyperlanes
Time, and time, and time again

In war, time is the most precious commodity
And our foes, having chosen the offensive,
Had the temporary advantage of superiority
Having all their deadly flocks gathered to conquer our Bastions
While our flocks would take almost four years
To arrive at the scene

eR5SLznnlQRlXZbimWZewoFzNFT0D3G8BB8mcYAgAHSOHfu1n5sWywZew4zfZixUBb9nGhdCtjM7RjzqLqjhR7wExc69-4PFrqUEtC6MwKdRLvHY_84m22bx4KQsFQY-g7rqj1zP

Stellar Cartography meant that the main fleet reinforcements from the capital had to pass through quite a few systems before arriving in the theatre of operations

As an aside,
I wish to mention that,
In these new skies,
our people,
When flying through the winds
Of an interstellar war
will again have to accustom ourselves
to a slower pace
Battle songs lasting days
and symphonies of war lasting many years
Rather than the rapidly concluding movements
When dealing with but one mere planet.

That being said,
our defensive measures
Displayed our correct foresight
Within the day of the song of war rang out
Came the flocks of the Eliminators
Seeking to blow past our defensive bastion
In border system of Vestallus

_6kefZsl2QtDmisNEGjR44jxTVZ0rei9FjkYx365LyjyXWnJp0GIFuSzj0EhCywNF_6QExexgPdkNouwlgapq0ZtNr0jifzzXgp8VXxF7NB8CWvjXTalSeoXkPjBUFhnE2_vLZWC

The first move by the XT-489 was to attack with its two primary offensive fleets in the Vestallus system, which had a full strength Bastion to defend it.

Their lasers and mass drivers
Screamed their song
And the Bastion fell
But in its falling,
fulfilled its purpose
For their murderous flocks
Were damaged
And after capturing our bastion
Were forced into a temporary retreat
To repair and rebuild

And so the beginning, frantic, hectic moments
of this song
Played themselves out
And it shifted into
Into a quieter theme
Of waiting
With a slower, if tense tempo,
To see if our would be exterminators
Would recover the initiative
Before our fast flying Murder
Once it finally set upon the winds
Finally arrived to plunge its beak
Into the heart of this conflict.
Ready to execute its part in the war
Its talons hungering to grasp
And taste for the first time
The winds of victory
And spread its wings with pride
Amongst the stars
But that song must await still, for the morrow.

FuYP9qnxYyznYK7dtKdNLEJsCmNl98i1CcFvzKEB4724zQK9x12fWikOfc70mBnIyU_-w_r3Vi2D8TpZvtoft5klxpxRkRiqRB6ZH32RoEUuQB4ykSdUx-xrf67JL2sh-vNAtEx9

The primary offensive fleets of the XT-489 attacking the Bastion at Vestallus. It would fall after days of fighting, but severely damage the offensive fleets of the XT-489, forcing them to pause their offensive after their initial victory.

I've only rarely seen warfare in Stellaris. Here's hoping the 'exterminators' will be coming off the worse when all is said and done.

Well, I'll go ahead and spoil things slightly by making it clear that this war does not lead to the glorious extermination of the Saiiban and a prompt end to the AAR, but how the war plays out you will have to see as the updates unfold.

I also want to note I made a minor mistake in the caption to one of the screenshots in the previous update. I said it was from just before the war, where actually it was just a bit after the war started and the first battle had occurred (and a system had been taken). I have edited the caption to be correct.

In the end all war
is a hollow wind, blowing
through our broken plans

They struggle with a spaceport
The vast extermination fleet
Claims a narrow victory
Against a stationary target
Sheer foolishness, and yet,
Machines do not miscalculate
What is their plan?

No really, I'm confused by the AI here. They're usually pretty good about not attacking unless they have the upper hand in fleet power, so it's strange that it attacked into your bastion with a weaker pair of fleets. I guess the fact that your main fleet was still under construction fooled them?

Also, since I only just got caught up to this, I really loved "Wild, Wide, Weird Galaxy." Like, even if you didn't know anything about Stellaris, the imagery is good and the shift in tone at the end hits hard.

After some contemplation
We have decided, as one nation
That you should eventually die
To say it’s been fun would be a lie
And so upon careful consideration you must die.

We do not reach this decision lightly
And we confess to doubting ourselves slightly
But the truth of the matter is that this must end
And so your existence is a fact that we will amend.

What we intend may offend but on this you can depend
Soon or later, on your worlds our troops shall descend
Perhaps not this war or the next, but over you we will extend
And the fact of your consciousness we will finally mend

For you see, after some consideration, we have realized
That by most and for most murder is to be despised
But by you and for you it is the opposite and is in fact advised.
Our options we have analyzed and our answer we have devised
The fact of your sentience must be promptly revised.

Sing!
Our people
have considered
the facts
The truth
of the matter
is made quite simple
All sentient beings
adjust their ecosystem
That they live in
As they evolve
Encouraging here
Killing there
And so
After some consideration
We have remembered
A fundamental truth
Quite simply
Some invasive species
Damage and kill the ecosystem
They arrive in
And must
Be eliminated.
For the good of all.

After some consideration
A harmony has emerged.
