I support aiding an ally. After all they are an enemy of Poland and of the polish might see them selves intervening perhaps our support would stop such a foolish act from the stupid polish government

((LK, we don't really need a plan from you at present because there's no way for us to reach AK without the fleet unless Poland goes nuts and gives us access [which is not going to happen]. In the interest of keeping things moving, I'll honor the request and give them war subsidies. I will update tonight!))

1869: The end of the HUN?

The predominant topic of the 1869 Reichstag sessions was war with Ryazan and the rejection of social reform by an increasingly conservative parliamentary body. Even the UAI, nominally a liberal party, found plenty of excuses to act like a properly conservative party. As a result, the government, including but not limited to Chancellor Michael von Hohenzollern, began to lose touch with their people. While 3rd Army began to sail east, accompanied by the German fleet and new Admiral Hörst Kühler, back in the Republic of Germany, things started to spiral out of control.

The first signs that something was wrong was when Japan, even though a proud commercial ally of Germany, refused to sign a military alliance as soon as the German plot to invade Ryazan became public knowledge.

At this outright refusal, a small but very vocal minority among the HUN and Imperialists demanded a war with Japan to "teach them respect for the conventions they are bound to." The Foreign Minister, Otto von Bismarck was able to salvage things thanks to his connections in Japan, who agreed to sign the alliance one month later, but the Chancellor started to grow nervous about these angry reactionaries who didn't know when to shut up. Things got even worse when government funding for the next major research project was not allocated to the army or navy, but to commerce. Friedrich Meier, the President of the State Planning Commission, openly supported the measure, as did the Minister of Education, Samuel von Dwyer-Frauenkirche. Nonetheless, those same voices kept criticizing things openly and behind closed doors.

Franz Meningen, "The Liberator", was the next to turn on the incumbent regime when the Foreign Minister rejected his calls to openly support an independence movement in Kashmir, citing the cost and difficulty of supporting a large scale war in Asia without a strong military and political footnote.

Once the war fleet arrived in Fukuoka, Japan, on 26 July, it received orders from the Chief of Staff to begin preparing for war with Ryazan and to liaise with Japanese officials in their army and navy, in an effort to coordinate the attack on Ryazan.

The final straw for the Hohenzollern government came when the people of Ak Koyunlu called for German support for their "liberation" of Qara Koyunlu. The matter was referred to the Reichstag and duly passed with flying colors.

Germany could not directly intervene in the war because the fleet was occupied, but it could provide monetary support. The Foreign Minister asked the government of Ak Koyunlu how much would be needed to support the war, and a figure was promptly provided and then delivered.

When news of the expense reached the ears of the public, it passed nonchalantly. However, what it did do was raise suspicion among the more economically conscious members of the Reichstag. A group of those quietly approached the Finance Minister, Fredrick Carile, asking where the funds to pay for this support would come from. Upon investigation, Carile found something that alarmed him: namely, that the Chancellor had illegally adjusted tax rates to pay for the forthcoming war with Ryazan, long before the war with Ak Koyunlu had ever occurred. [1] Carile wanted to bring it up at the 1870 session of the Reichstag after asking Michael personally what had happened. What Carile didn't know was that one of his clerks had been consistently feeding stories to some of the more radical German newspapers. They published the story immediately and angry voters descended on HUN party headquarters.

In an impromptu speech to the public, Michael von Hohenzollern resigned as Chancellor. "I take full responsibility for my actions. Although my personal opinion is that the right to adjust taxes comes from the Finance Minister's mandate to balance the budget and the recently passed amendment, which provides for the immediate funding of the army and navy in time of war, I understand that legally, a state of war did not exist with Ryazan and that what I did was wrong. Accordingly, I am resigning from office and calling for new elections. Thank you."

[1] This is all true, although I didn't think of the ramifications of this before the event popped; an event I've never seen before, I might add.

So, we have early elections! Here are the ramifications:

-- Konrad von Schwaben ((Mikkel Glahder)) is interim Chancellor until the elections are completed. He is free to make a policy statement ((which I will use to determine how to choose from events if they spawn between now and the election.))
-- All existing plans remain legally binding.
-- Michael von Hohenzollern steps down as party leader. Other parties may wish to change their leaders as well, but it is not required.

I am giving everyone 48 hours (that is, until 19 January) to get their parties in a row before I sim through the elections in a mini-update. Government officials may also deal with the fallout of Michael's resignation as they see fit.

Gerrit Aldo Servatius van Kloetinge, now 61, remains at the head of the Alliance despite having been largely out of prominence for the past nine years. His commitment to the party's principles is as firm as ever.

A faithful servant of the German Republic, Otto von Bismarck has always remained. However, in light of the fall of the Hohenzollern government, he has chosen to herewith retire from politics, believing that he no longer has any means to contribute to a future government.

Mein Deutschen Volk,

I have remained a faithful servant of this Republic, and have expressed my undying loyalty and patriotism for Germany since I was elected to the esteemed Reichstag. I shall recall with fondness my time as your Chancellor after the unfortunate death of Kanzler Bern... and I shall hope that my actions as Foreign Minister have changed the world on it's head, but I feel that the Winds of Change have blown far too much, and that I say that it is now time for me to retire. 54 is not old for a man like me, nay... but I believe that it is time for me to let new blood rise to authority and power within the Republic, and to go home to Schonhausen, where I can live my life again.

I thank all of my beautiful, amazing comrades in arms, associates, enemies and political allies for their standing with me through successive governments, and I hope that I shall be remembered fondly, but it is time for me to go home. Twenty five years has taken it's toll upon me, and I grow weary.

All the best,
Otto von Bismarck

Name: Maximilian von Wittelsbach
Position: Conclave of Stadtholders
Birth Place: Münich, Bavaria
Born: 1811 (59)
Party: The New Society
Bio: Maximilian was born in Münich, Bavaria, a descendant of the old rival of the Hohenzollerns, the Wittelsbach dynasty. In the modern age, Wittelsbach is now the name of a moderately wealthy industrial family in Bavaria. Max holds no animosity toward the Hohenzollerns, and seeks to do right by Germany. He has lived in Leipzig since he was 27, and succeeded Otto von Bismarck as Stadtholder of Leipzig upon his retirement in 1870. He seeks to reform the party properly and lead it to an even greater future.

It is most unfortunate when the men we think we can trust most prove dishonest. Michael Von Hohenzollern made a gamble, one, if found, would surely end his career. Indeed this is what happened. I take some responsibility for failing to notice it earlier. I intend to remain financial minister, and I request that any future government keep me in it. I have run the economy fairly throught Michael's term, and I shall serve faithfully in duty. I await eagerly Von Schwaben's statement, and hope it will sooth any wounds left by this incident.

~Fredrick Carile, Financial Minister

((A Wittelsbach! Damn, you beat me to resurrecting the age-old rival of the Hohenzollerns. My reputation is ruined! :p

Since there's going to a be a new election, does this mean it's possible to put forward platform changes?))

I am disappointed at the actions of the HUN, and how the Chancellor acted, but they are still Germans, show we must show them compassion, not hate. Concerning the upcoming elections, I am interested in running for Minister of Education. If I am chosen as the Minister of Education, I promise I will do my utmost to take Germany farther than any nation in terms of technology and eduction.

- Stadtholder von Oldenburg

Provided the New Society permits me to run, I wish to be considered for the office of Foreign Minister, to replace my predecessor, Otto von Bismarck. Barring this, I am eager to work with a new government, regardless of whom takes power.

Signed,
Maximilian von Wittelsbach

(( I've been researching Friedrich Meier's future technologies to beg for. I thought I'd point out the following, as people may wish to campaign for them:

  • Analytic Philosophy becomes available in 1870, giving us another 100% to our research points if we research it.
  • Nationalism and Imperialism (technically, the 'The Dark Continent' invention, which cannot pop before 1890) will be necessary for the Scramble for Africa. It's already available.
  • Military Logistics (available 1870) would improve the speed of it popping.
  • Steel Steamers (available 1880) would do the same.
  • If my math is right, Colonial Negotiations (an invention from Breech Loaded Rifles, which we already have) could also put us over the top for colonizing Africa. It can pop in 1880.
  • Machine guns (available 1870) would help it pop.
  • As would naval logistics (available 1870).
  • And economic responsibility (available 1870).
  • We definitely need Mission to Civilize (an invention from State & Government, which we have) will absolutely be necessary for colonization. It can pop starting in 1860, so we may already have it.
  • If we don't, Nationalism and Imperialism will help.
  • As will Market Regulations.
  • And Naval Statistics.
  • And in general, the better our Naval Doctrine tech, the better shipyards we can build, and the further we can colonize.

Hopefully I won't be the only one begging the Minister of Education in the future. :)

Ferdinand, as of now, at age 20.

Ferdinand von Hohenzollern has now moved out of the Hohenzollern estates, after he had yet ANOTHER fight with his uncle Michael, this time over socialism. He has however been seen many times at radical socialist and marxist conventions. He has been known to live in a simple house , with a spartan way of life.

Permit me to add Raider Group Doctrine to this list, and beg, plead, cajole, argue for, and, if necessary, throw a tantrum to get it researched as soon as possible. If we wish to build a modern navy, we must expand some of our bases to lvl 3, and this will permit us to do so.
