I noticed weird behavior when uniting Ireland. After I created the King title, getting the remaining de iure counties into my realm was a little inconsistent.

When I declared war against a One-County Duke, that county went into my demesne, while One-County Counts became my vassals. Is that normal? Why didn't the Dukes become my vassals?

Because they still held their duke title.

If you look, you'll find that they usurped a county from one of their vassals as their new home.

They become your vassal only if they have one county title and no higher title than that.

So a 1 county count will become your vassal, but a 1 county duke will not. And neither will a 2 county count.

So it only works to vassalize someone if they are count and have a single county. (they can still have other barony titles elsewhere tho)

Also, if you are fighting somebody over a county they don't own themselves but only are the liege of, you aren't fighting for the holding itself but for liegeship. You can what exactly you are fighting for during the declaration of war. Look at the part that tells you what happenes if you win the war. It will either say you will gain the county or that you will become the current count's new liege.

If you look, you'll find that they usurped a county from one of their vassals as their new home.

Unless the duke had no vassals, in which case the ducal title goes extinct, the former duke becomes a landless refugee somewhere, and his last county becomes part of the attacker's demesne.
