I'm doing a Monarch's Journey run with Konstantinos of Samos. After Konstantinos' death, I'm currently playing as the elder of the only two sons. From what I know and also read from the wiki, I should be a potential successor for the current emperor; however, I can't be nominated.

Here's the situation: I own the Them of Samos, Duchies of Sardinia and Venice, and 7 counties. I am both on the Emperor's council as an advisor and also serve as a commander. On top of those, the emperor is my uncle (my mother's brother). My mother is alive so I don't have a claim for the Byzantine throne yet. I am not mutilated assuming harelip doesn't count.

As the wiki suggests, I should be a potential candidate as a commander. I'm not sure if I count as a member of the emperor's close family as a nephew. Although I'm an elector, I cannot be nominated.
What really dazzles me is that my unlanded brother, who sits ideally in my court is a valid successor that I can vote for, and convince other people through favors to vote for him. Since we are born to the same parents, he also doesn't have a claim on the throne until our mother passes away.

I'd really appreciate it if someone can point out what I'm missing. If you require more info regarding the situation or some screenshots, I'll be happy to share them.

I thought I read that having a birth defect (harelip, clubfoot, stutter, etc.) will disqualify you from Imperial consideration. Not sure if thats true, but it could be the reason.

The harelip does seem to be the problem. See line 4795 of common/succession_voting/01_succession_voting_specials.txt

Thank you so much.
It's really messed up. I wouldn't assume one being harelipped or clubfooted would keep other people from voting for them even in those ages. I would understand it though if it was an opinion malus.

It's a Byzzie thing. The emperor is supposed to be perfect etc. so any physical defects disqualify. Hence the rampant mutilations of claimants they're so famous for.
