I got this weird idea to try to run a handsoffgame where people can then be allowed to take "control" of a ai-country and direct its actions through manipulating the ai-file and making certain actions which will be implemented through savegame-file editing by me!

Anyone ever tried this before?

anyway u can read more about my idea here:
10-20 people NON-PLAYER pbem game!

hopefully this would give room for grandstrategy, diplomacy and hell perhaps even a bit of roleplaying without having to control any armies (or infact any handson at all)....anyway I think it might be interesting to try out?

any comments?? :)

Well, if you already have an active thread on the MP forum, why cross post?

because no one uses the mp thread :) and this is a general discussion about it, not the mp organization of it. long live the cross post!

boehm, sounds interesting, but i am quite busy myself. i think it will work best if it includes an aar for those who are interested. it definitely allows for ahistorical playing of countries, but without a human advantage - making it ideal for a type of roleplaying aar.

Yes, I have considered this idea, but i don't think the ai in EU is sufficiently programmable, nor are the sides "equal" or the map "symetrical enough to really observe the differences in the strategies each player programs into their ai.

The idea would work much better in a RTS game like Dark Reign or Age of Empires where you could really see the differently programmed strategies working against each other.

Actually it would work very well on Age of Rifles also...if anyone remembers that game...

Let us know how it works out. :) Personally I have thought that I had a fair amount of control over my ai when using it in pbem games. Things such as the to fight list, aggressiveness ratings, to colonize areas, can make a big difference between winning and losing. But it was always overshadowed by what you were actually doing on your turn. Anyways, I am interested on seeing how much control you actually can have over the EU ai, in the long run.

I fully realize that there is a limit to how much u can control your ai...but I dare to argue that considering that a player can change:

-DP-settings (one click per 10yrs)
-choose which historical choises will be taken (thus also effecting DPsettings)
-customize the ai with respect to the to-fight list & aggressiveness, colonization etc.
-buy relations up/down with other countries, engage/break alliances.
-buy conquistadors/explorers
-and most importantly conduct diplomacy with other human players and get them to change their settings....ei. to-fightlist accordingly....

The result of the above could eg. easily mean that Denmark & Sweden decides to stay friends (ei. remove each other from their respective to-fight lists! & periodically buyup their relations with each other...) - Sweeden could then decide to go heavily into naval and colonization with Denmark, buying an explore or conquistador every now and then...and/or Denmark could decide to join Sweden in a "baltic crusade" perhaps going heavily into land and putting Novgorod and the teutonic order on the to fightlist while increasing the aggressiveness to 100%....

the ability to edit the ai file, changing your DP-settings and conducting diplomacy should make u have a pretty big control of the future of your "puppet" state....:D

My idea was basically born out of frustration with the fact that the EU RPG really has nothing to do with Europe Universalis....so consider this an exercise in Grand Strategy & Diplomacy

I think you should prefer 'alive' players. It will be more interesting then :)

Since they do not actually play, I do not think it matters. :)

well hopefully it will be a lot of fun ....provided u think diplomacy and grand strategy is fun....certainly a game with 11 human players will be more of a diplomatic challenge than a SP game or a MP game with 4-6-8 players .....

ohh yes and we could still use 2-3+ more players but I expect to start during this week with however many players we have!

hey boehm, i read the rules and i got a headache :)
is there any simple version available? :D i am tempted to join, but my time is limited, so the more complicated the harder it is for me to join...

well u dont have to utilize all the rules...the whole idea behind the AP system is that each player should only give a limited amount of orders (to keep my workload down)....and I dont expect more than 1 max 2 turns per week depending on what people think and how much work is actually is for me....

I expect (that was the idea anyway) that the majority of time spent on this game should be on diplomacy since the actual "giving of orders" should be much faster than playing a normal pbem game.....
