Well, I know this is old school, but that old game (released in 1989) allowed you to customise units in terms of armor and weapons, it´s something that I haven´t seen done again (with a few exceptions) in this kind of role-play wargames.

I know it would create a balancing nightmare to solve, but it would really add to the role-play side, at least let us choose colors and banners for our troops!! :D

For those that know nothing about that game, it was basicaly the same as King Arthur but without the arthurian mythology and with turn based battles...and 2D horrible graphics of course...but who cares...once I played it with my brother for 36 hours straight on an Amiga 500...the things you do when you are young! :D

I couldn't beat the game. It was too difficult.

But at least it was fun. ;)

I beat it but took me a long time, I don´t know if it was more difficult than KA but certanly remembered it that way. Maybe someone will buy the license (if someone is still holding on to it) and remake the game! KA is missing some good city/castle battles!

Sword of Aragon was a fantastic game all around.

1 - Very kick butt war mechanics. I particularly enjoyed that heroes and units leveled up, and that you could customize their names and unit numbers.
2 - Extremely challenging battles and enemies - the elves were a nightmare, the titans well-nigh invincible, and if you weren't quick and smart, you'd lose in even minor engagements. Additionally, because enemies could appear behind your front lines, you always had to maintain garrisons in the rear that sapped your main army's strength.
3 - A decent story line
4 - I personally loved the fact that it was pretty much impossible to take and hold the whole map. Yes, at one point, I had done it, with the exception of the final city... but then the Titans decided to come roaring back and re-take their home. I couldn't stop them, as my armies had been decimated in the original attack, and they killed the core of my army and I had to re-load. I decided that some things were better left undone--same with the dark elf city.

Darmnit... now I have an itching to play that game again...

Now that was an really awesome game which i enjoyed for a very loooooong time !! :)
You should try "Elemental : War of Magic" if youre looking for a fantasy strategie game with some roleplaying and troops which you actually can equip in many different styles and research new weapons for them. Not as good as Sword of Aragon at its time but quite decent and enjoyable :)
