When I click on the wine bottle on the trade window, I get a popup showing the product details:

Produced by:
Artisans 22.2
TOTAL PRODUCED: 22.201

Used by:
Artisans: 17.97
Aristocrats: 4.17
Bureaucrats: 0.71
. . . followed by a list of pop groups using < 0.5 each
TOTAL USED: 23.243

So it appears that my nation is producing the vast majority of its daily need for wine.

However, in the Market Activity portion of the trade screen, I see the following next to the wine symbol:

Activity: 20.0 Cost: -263

According to what I've always understood this window to be showing, this means I imported 20.0 units of wine in the previous day, at a total cost of 263. In fact, if I hover over the small trade icon at the top of the screen, it shows me that wine is among my top three imports and I imported 19.98 units.

Why am I importing that much wine when I only need 1 unit above what I'm producing? Is there a possible explanation for this?

I don't know if this is relevant, but the "common market" portion of the trade window shows 39.06 wine available, and 12.4 exported. It does seem unlikely that my combined spherelings would be producing as much wine as I am. (I'm Prussia in the year 1839. I've added Holstein and Luxembourg to my sphere, and haven't lost any of my originals)

EDIT: Here's another thing I just noticed. Hovering over the wine icon on the production tab of the production window shows the following:

"Our artisans are producing 22.2 Wine each day"
"Sold(Domestic): 2.42"
"Sold(Export): 22.10"

So my nation is producing 22 wine each day, of which 2 is being sold domestically and 22 is being exported. This, even though wine is one of my top 3 imports.

I'm sure I must be misunderstanding something, because Paradox would never release a game where most of the information given to the player is complete nonsense. Please, somebody explain what's going on here.

The Activity section shows how much of that good your common market(you + your spherelings) exported/imported. So it's probably not you who is doing the importing.

As far as I know, the "available" section here shows how much of that good is in your common market(so the 22.201 you are producing + anything your spheres are producing)

This still does't make sense to me. If the Activity section is about my whole sphere, that means my sphere is importing 20 wine each day, right?. Then why does the Common Market section show 12.4 exported? Either one of them is showing different information than what I think, or one of them is bugged.

As an experiment, I saved my game and then removed everybody from my sphere. After letting it run for a month, I now have the following:

Product detail screen for wine:
TOTAL PRODUCED: 22.164
TOTAL USED: 16.624

Market Activity, row for wine:
Activity: 1.4 Cost: 19

Common Market, row for wine:
Available: 22.16 Exported: 5.5

The common market section clearly matches the produced and used statistics. But I have no idea what the Market Activity section is telling me, if anything.

I then sorted both the Market Activity and Common Market sections according to amount exported. For eight of my exports, the Market Activity number precisely matches the amount exported. For the other five, it is wildly different.

In the "common market" section, the "exported" doesn't actually mean how much was exported but rather how much was available to be exported. In the trade screen if you click on a goods and look at the right side you see the "x available for our country". This is the total production of you + your spherelings. In your example since you don't have spherelings it's just your total production: "total produced - total used", so in this case "22.164 - 16.624" which is 5.54(exactly what is "exported"). So you(+ your spherelings) have 5.5 wine that could not be used domestically, and is therefore available for export(this doesn't mean that 5.5 was actually sold).

The "market activity" section shows how much of that good your common market(you + your spherelings) actually exported(if it's positive) or imported(if it's negative). So in this case out of the 5.5 wine that was available to be exported, 1.4 was actually sold for 19 pounds.

That explanation makes sense, but I still don't understand what was happening in my initial post, when "Market Activity" indicated 20 imported, and "Common Market" indicated 12.4 available for export.

That 12.4 should be "total produced in my sphere - total used in my sphere", right? But if my sphere is producing 12.4 more than it's using, why did 20 wine get imported, according to the Market Activity section?

I think the 12.4(exported) is rather "x available in our country" - "total used". "x available.." is you + your spheres, but "total used" is only your country. And by "total used" I mean when you click the wine icon in trade screen and it opens the new window where you see "total produced" and "total used".

But yeah things get complicated with spheres.
