This forum is actually pretty peaceful, considering that EU is the kind of game that attracts nationalists and other crazies. Total War Centre has far more agressive members.

You *can* discuss holocaust and the like here on the history forum. You can't (and really there's no point) in the *game* forums, which is only for good IMO.
In China they avod all this by censoring everything.

This is true. I don't know about the TW forums, having never even been there, but this forum is generally a big step up from most that I have seen.
I have and they are really nasty, brutish and short. When you respond to a post and it isn't part of their group think, they call you a troll. This forum has been very good for the most part.
So I take it going there and saying you actually liked ETW would be a really bad idea? :rofl:

I believe the comment was more about the forum community in comparison to the one here, not the game itself.
no, but everything has a start. and it is better to kill off the derail before the thread is infested with it, but let´s not derail about derailing

I don't play Total War games, yet I read the twcenter forums for entertainment...it's that good. The twcenter forums are perfect in that almost all topics are officially prohibited but unoffically encouraged. Every thread becomes an unintelligible catastrophy which makes for a very vibrant and healthy online community.

The EU3 forum is sane, which is to say that it is boring. There was some briefly amusing conflict in that "secular options" thread but everyone seemed to just drift away and let the two principles have at it. This is not the behavior of a healthy online community.
Here, in this place, I have done my part by insulting the opposite sex, giving unhelpful advice, and spreading lies about the Dutch; and yet, nothing interesting happens. The back of my EU3 box reads: "engage in the thriving Europa Universalis III online community." Bullshit. In my time here I have been despicably backstabbed. I plan to deprive your company of income by spending ten hours a day explaining why I plan on forgetting about the products I spend ten hours a day writing about.

On a serious note, I've actually been slightly shellshocked by the general level of discourse on this forum. My traditional experience has been somewhere on one of two polar opposites; borderline-fascist levels of group think and persecution delivered accordingly, or anarchic trolling to the level of violent prepubescent society, equivalent to the episode of south park when the kids get all their parents arrested.
I think the combination of a small studio game, a reasonable level of oversight, and a certain level of intelligence and historical interest that is required to be interested in this game creates a much more reasonable community. My experience has been nearly entirely positive (although I found the "do women play this game" thread a bit shocking, although my girlfriend did just see me writing this message and called me a huge dork. Thank goodness its too late for her to escape haha)

I just think the forum needs better modding. instead of saying that for example, one can not talk about the Balkan cultures, every time a thread gets out of hand it should be closed. I saw this done rather quickly with a thread, but also, some threads have been let to go on. This isn't about censoring controversial ideas, it is about keeping threads from being hijacked by trolls, and flamewars.

I'm genuinely impressed with the level of discourse and discussion on these fora (the lone exception being occasional threads titled "[random province] should be [Balkan culture A] not [Balkan culture B]."
The fact is, EU3 isn't an easy game to get into and it requires a predisposition towards renaissance era political and religious arcana. Not to toot our own horns but I've always assumed the average EU player is a bit better educated than the average person as a whole. I imagine this adds a bit to the civility level, although we all know that someone can be a brilliant intellect yet still a jerk.

Anyone is also free to PM me about issue related to content, or complaints they have about rules or how they are enforced.
