Just wanted to throw out some thoughts and ideas on what I would have liked to see in a new AOW game. That said, I know the game is too far along to even consider most of them. These are of course my opinions and I'm sure some others would differ. Also note that I'm not completely up to date on the game details so some of these may already be addressed.

GOALS:
- Make city management more about conquering and upgrading resource nodes
- Allow fortifying cities to give players time to move their forces.
- Add the option for a more turtely economic playstyle where players continously improve their region.
- Prevent city spam.
- Prevent tier 4 unit spam.
- Focus on fewer, more customizable armies and units.
- Mitigate late game large battle burnout.
- Add variability to research paths.

STRATEGY LAYER:
- Add the concept of regions.
- Limit number of cities per region to 1
- Remove the ability to build any building in any region. Instead, have many of the available buildings determined by the available resources in a region.
- Region resources are generated from actual resource nodes/hexes on the map. For example, metal would be generated from a mine. In most cases, these resource nodes will need to be conquered by fighting some enemies.
- Conquered resource nodes can be further improved with combat. For example, a level 1 mine could be upgraded to a level 2 mine by having your army delve deeper into the mine to defeat monsters.
- Allow for continuous "building up" of these resource nodes by investing into them. A one region player who keeps investing in their resource nodes will be able to compete with another player who focuses on conquest.
- Allow for the construction of walls on hexes. You could build a wall around your city for protection. It will allow players time to move forces to defend fortified towns.
- Increase upkeep of units dramatically, so that you can only field a couple of armies at any given time.
- Add the ability to create gear from one of the buildings, with a random roll on stats. This should be somewhat costly so that it isn't spammable.

UNITS:
- Remove the ability to train or summon high tier units. High tier units are instead attained by upgrading low tier units.
- Allow customization of regular units such as talent trees and the ability to equip them with weapons, armor pieces, trinkets, ect... Of course, the type of weapon/armor will be determined by the unit type.

COMBAT:
- Remove ability to join combat with multiple armies from different hexes. Combat is only 1 army vs 1 army (the intent here is to shorten combat phases to prevent late game large battle burnout).
- Remove super long ranges.

RESEARCH:
- Show research tree so players can plan their research path for the game
- Make research node effects variable by game. So for example, if a particular research node would increase laser damage by x%, x would vary across games (this feature could be toggled on or off for multiplayer). This would force players to reconsider research paths every game as a particular node that wasn't very good one game could be amazing the next.

Spent some time catching up with the latest info on the game and I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing! While it doesn't seem to address all of the things I'd like, its definitely seems like a move in the right direction :)

I really like how they've taken so many things from AoW3 and all it's DLC and expanded on it just for the Planetfall base game.

I can only imagine how incredible AoW4 is going to be :p
