  • Catching the Moon - Currently the Space Elevator just goes straight up... but what if it was tethered at one end to one of Mars' moons? And what if you could then build a new colony right up there at the other end, making it a true starport for Mars?
Not Phobos nor Deimos have mars-synchronous orbits, although Deimos is close. Therefore a space tether between the planet and a moon would be wound around the planet snapping the tether, or in the case of unbreakable tether dragging the moon down :)
Now a tether only attached to Deimos and free floating but sufficiently weighted at the Mars end not to escape into space: The Mars end would still move across the terrain at about 164 km/h if my calculations are correct. On the positive side Deimos has an extremely circular orbit so the highest and lowest point of the weight rushing through Martian atmosphere would only differ by 15 km.

It's lifted straight out of an SF novel (I honestly forget which) where they anchor one end to Deimos, but they had to give the tether itself a periodic wobble for some reason. Anyway, this game is bending reality enough already, so... who not? :D

I believe the Mars Trilogy had the elevator tethered to an asteroid they dragged in from the belt.

Hey it is interesting enough idea I went to wikipedia to check the stats and calculated if it would be actually doable :)
