Some suggestions I would love to see in a city building game (or expansion)

First off, really looking forward to playing your game :). And since you guys said in a video you would like suggestions, here are some. Just in case there will be an expansion some day . Maybe some of those things are not possible at all though. But throw enough shit at the wall and something will stick.

Some things that I think were not in sim city 4 enough, and that is feeling involved with the city, and random events happening (keeps the game more exciting and unpredictable). Cities feel kind cold to me.

For example a lot of little events, the president visiting, and making certain one time changes to make him happy (like blocking streets, and things like that, making sure the parade only visits the good part of town)? Or how about the olympics or world cup being held in your town? Or NASA deciding they want to build a rocket station? Oil spills? Diseases threats, full blown zombie attacks? Really heavy weather like snowtorms disrupting the city. Or terrorist attacks. Maybe a massive sinkhole, or earthquakes, tsunami's? Police chases, drive by shootings. Car crashes, train crashes. Missing persons, and serial killers striking your city. just general wear and tear on your city over time that make it feel like life is happening to your city and make it more fun to just watch your city.

If you have a lot of those big and small random events, that would mean after 40-50 hours of playing you still discover those small new things, and make the game more exciting and make the city feel alive.

And what I really liked in that other building game was seasons. Having winter and summer autumn. Having the river freeze up? Choosing to spend to crack it open for the ships, or just let it be and get less tax money? Same with snow on raods. If you have a lot of tourism, you can spend less on law enforcement in winter? Or extreme weather conditions. Like run a city where it is almost always winter, or in the middle of the desert. And try to get some specialized economy going to make it work.

Another thing I would love to see is things like unemployment and recessions. And the option to hand out subsidies and benefits for unemployed and disabled people. And a borrow system, where you either force the pension funds in your city to borrow you money (at a cost later in the game if those people want their pensions) or more expensively borrow from outside the city. This would kind of simulate current problems, where pensions cannot be paid out. So if there is a recession, government could spend more (like in the real world), to soften the blow of the recession, to keep unemployment down. Would be cool if you see the effects in the city too of those cycles. But ofcourse you would have to watch that you dont borrow too much and default!

And something like aging of the population as your city gets richer and bigger becuase people have fewer children (which means fewer people that are employable, and fewer tax payers, and higher pension costs). Immigration would be an interesting solution, like how many immigrants you allow in your city. If you let them in without facilities you will get a lot of poor people that won't move up the ranks and cause crime and dont know the language (so they are unemployable). So you need facilities (spend money) to educate and help them integrate, and then make sure you only let them in slowly.

Different ethnicities in your town? Races tend to stick together. So for example things like China town?

Also interesting to add could be mini games. Like a warning that some chemical plant is dumping waste in playgrounds? And then you need to watch that plant for a fixed period, watch out if any trucks are leaving the plant to go to playgrounds or parks. And if you do see that happening you could give them a big fine (earn some extra money). Kind of like in the Anno games where you had to find people in the city sometimes and return them.

Or how about a minigame where someone is suspected of claiming disability benefits without being disabled? You could have a minigame where you stalk that person around, and if they dont seem disabled, you can punish them (to scare of the other fraudsters, and save yourself some social benefit money). These little things is what added extra life into the anno games for me. They should be optional though.

Dont want to tell you guys how to do your job, but i f some of this will be in an expansion, ill glady play another 30$!

These are some pretty interesting ideas!

I certainly agree with the "Seasons" and "Events" ideas, but I wouldn't hold my breath for introducing racial segregation into a city builder no matter how realistic it may or may not be. :p That being said, there's nothing stopping you from naming different districts! Such as Chinatown, as you pointed out.

Maybe things like Seasons and Events will be part of an expansion or DLC - The devs have been pretty clear that with only 4 weeks before release they're taking this time to balance the game, polish it up and quash bugs rather than add new gameplay content.

Definitely think there's some DLC potential there. But I doubt any of this will be in the launch. I too enjoy more depth instead of simplicity. I mean, after I build most of my city, I'd love to have more duties other than "just build more".

Yeah I think the main thing that probably shouldn't take up that much time, is the financial aspect of the game. It should be more like real life. Figuring out different ways to get income to the city. Have things like a trade surplus or deficit vs other cities. Also make it feel like you are part of a country. Allow the player to have interactions with other mayors? Do trade? Have like a newspaper system that makes you feel like stuff is happening in the outside world that affects people in your city. Is there a war somewhere? This could affect what people want, or what facilities they would want at that moment. Try to add more emotion into the game (or emotion of the people). Now these building games often feel like they are the only place on earth. Make the player deal with the small and big problems that the world throws at your city. Like random windfalls or setbacks.

Like something big happens in your city, that could attract tourists. Or a disaster like a train crash that needs to be dealt with.

Honestly do these things right, and the guys at EA really have something big to beat. But i guess that is not possible yet with such a small team and little resources.

Hey how about road racing f1 grand prix like in san marino or singapore, bicycle events or another, probably you will get more tourist with events.
and also modding tools some part feature something like road setting which can be saved and used repeatedly, plus large or dynamic airport can be modified by using like bus line when airplane was landed into the airport.

anyone has similar ideas?

Your ideas are very nice but... missing person? Really? lol i wouldnt give a damn about a missing person on Cities: Skyline. XD

Well Sim City 4: Rush Hour had those kind of mini-games but i bet most of people got bored after very little time, i personally just done 1 but it was so boring that i stop. I dont know if people would care about something like that happening in your city.

I think the major things they need to put asap are weather (with impact, like you said), night/day cycle, rush hour, trams and tunnels. But your ideas are very nice and would give more life to the city. :)

Yeah those ideas would give a nice touch to Skyline. Imagine Obama going into your city. XD

What if he LIVES in your city?

What about a lot where nearby cims come in and dump their garbage. Then a garbage truck comes in and takes all the garbage away.

The benefit is that your garbage trucks don't have to stop at every house in the neighborhood. They'll only have to stop at that lot to collect all their garbage. It'll be more efficient! ^_^

The drawback is that no one would like to live right next to one.
