River warfare has been an important aspect of warfare throughout history. below are 3 examples:
-Brown water navies have been used in african rivers by european powers in colonial conquests.
-China has a long history of using navies on the yang tze river to prevent the advancement of armies.
-Navies sailed up and down the Mississippi river and blockaded various cities throughout the american civil war
I propose that certain large rivers should require that armies can only cross by loading on and off transports as is the case in real history.
some gameplay advantages of allowing navies to navigate certain large rivers are:
1) Increases the importance of navies even more. Want to invade that country across the large river? you need to beat their navy or your army will never be able to cross the river.
2) Some trade nodes sit on major rivers but cannot be protected by light ships due to not being a maritime trade node. this isnt very realistic as ships can access those nodes by navigating rivers. examples include:
-Ohio trade node can be accessed through the hudson river
-Chendu and Xian trade nodes can be accessed through the yangtze river
-Doab trade node can be access by various rivers in india
