There are quite a few bastards in the Norwegian and Danish royal houses and a some of them are still regular bastards. I thought "Not much longer!" and so the bug reporting game begins!

The Norwegians

Magnus Barefoot had many children. Now they're all regular bastards and this is not correct as it ensures game over on succession.

Code:

	1123.8.29={

}
Pretty simple just add legit to his bastard trait.

Harald. Now he should be legit and he was missing his historical partner Ingrid Ragnvaldsdotter whom he got one child with.

These are Harald's children. All children, except Inge, should be legit bastards as they were born out of wedlock by mistresses (some are quite famous). Inge himself became hunchback almost instantly after birth due to a servant dropped him on the floor which made it deform. I added the nickname "the hunchback" when he ascend the Norwegian throne.

Sigurd was known as "the Crusader" not only for his work down in the Holy lands, but also because he waged war with infidels in Sweden (he was a loony so that why he did it). I changed the date of marriage with his wife and I also removed her as spouse in 1128 as he divorced her around that date.

These are Sigurd's children. Magnus was a legit bastard and indeed he was blinded, but during that event he got one of his foot removed and he was castrated. I added maimed as a trait when he was blinded, but didn't add the castrated trait as this is a hard decision you'll have to make. Sigurd's daughter had the wrong mother and was born after the divorce of Malfrida, I corrected this with what sources I have.

This is one of Magnus Barefoot's daughters. She was already the mother of Jon in Island, but was lacking the marriage with the father. I added the marriage at a date that make sense, and made Tora a legit bastard.

This is later in time. Agnes had the wrong dynasty (the same as the one of her husband) and was lacking a legit_bastard trait. She married a Knight from the Royal court named Haftore in 1302. I just changed the date of marriage and her age so that she'll be at least 14 when the marriage happens which is reasonable.

This is Ragnhild's husband and their child. Harald was a legit bastard of Erik the Good. I added Ragnhild in and changed Bjorn's birth date by one year so that Ragnhild will be 16 by the year of her marriage with Harald and 16 when she gives birth to Bjorn. Perhaps you should consider adding the nickname "ironside" to Bjorn?

}
Harald's brother, Erik, was also a bastard, but should be legit. Erik married Sigurd the Crusader's ex-wife Malfrida in 1130 however his son, Svend, was not Malfrida's and he was a legit bastard of Erik.

Code:

Noted these too. They're bastards yet they should be legit bastards. Niels was added in the recent 1.08 patch.

Summary and Sources

This changes will not only be more historically correct, but it will also ensure full playability since regular bastards can't inherit and it would be impossible to continue as a son of Magnus Barefoot etc. The dynasties are far from complete. There are more characters that should be legitimate bastards and several marriages are still missing, this was just a big scratch on the surface. I encourage someone in the dev team to take a look at the various monarchs and find the missing children and marriages that I've not mentioned. Also when it comes to Magnus Barefoot's children they should split up the lands in Norway to make the big Norwegian civil war possible. Thank you for your time.

Great stuff, Voy. Try to find and add as many of those missing characters as you can, though I understand they have to be broken up into sensible-sized posts as it's a lot of work.

On the subject of Scandinavia, norwegian.txt has several instances of both 'Olav' and 'Olaf' -- the former is the spelling used in their name list, and so the only name that will link. I'd suggest changing them all to 'Olav' then.

Likewise, danish.txt has one 'Olaf' and one 'Oluf' -- they would both be better as the latter for the same reason as above. In swedish.txt there are two characters named 'Olof' when their linked version is 'Olaf', which is used for all other instances of that name.

It's worth changing these as they're incredibly quick to fix and it will help stop the incorrect numbering of monarchs.

I've mentioned the _Knut linking issue in another thread, but it needs fixing because it means Cnut the Holy is incorrectly numbered as III rather than IV.

Alternatively, just rename the first king of Denmark to Knud:

Code:
101549 = {
	name="[COLOR="#FF8C00"]Knud[/COLOR]" # [COLOR="#FF8C00"]Hardeknud[/COLOR]
	dynasty=490
	martial=7
	diplomacy=4
	intrigue=5
	stewardship=4
	religion="norse_pagan"
	culture="danish"
	add_trait="brave"
	add_trait="skilled_tactician"
	852.1.1={
		birth="852.1.1"
	}
	934.1.1={
		death="934.1.1"
	}
}

That should probably do the trick, as other characters named Hardeknud are actually named (and historically listed as) Knud. Hardeknud was just a nickname sometimes unofficially added to a ruler's real name -- like Rufus, for example. So, either link it with _Knut or just rename ID 101549 to Knud and remove 'Hardeknut' from the Danish name list. Incidentally, it's the wrong spelling ('t' instead of 'd') as well as being somewhat dubious as an actual name.

(Sorry to hijack your thread somewhat, but it's a relevant issue and you've probably noticed the numbering issue...)

I have thought of the Olav - Olaf name, but that is up to the devs not me. They might want it in?

Also if we talk about that, then Haakon and Håkon is the same thing. Haakon in the Norwegian.text should be named Håkon (even if Haakon is more awesome).

To be honest, it's not the spelling that I am overly bothered about but the fact that if you have multiple spellings then they must be linked, otherwise we end up with numbering issues. This happens with other cultures, such as Etienne/Étienne for Frankish, so it's common to see an Étienne III (as an example) of Champagne be succeeded by an Etienne I because it's the wrong spelling and doesn't link. I've pointed these issues out several times but they never get fixed, so I won't keep doing so. I just mentioned the Knud III/IV issue here because he's a king (and your post is about Danes) and I think that kings should obviously be a priority for correct regnal numbering.

For clarity's sake, please don't post entirely different issues in one bugreport.

This bugreport is about several turning bastards into legit_bastards, not about renaming all kind of characters.

The name issues are already known and don't need to be reposted again and again.

I don't know how to do that so perhaps you could report the name stuff? I thought you had already done so before.
I have, it's just not something that is considered a priority by the devs.

You can do this yourself, though; just open 00_cultures.txt and use it as a guide when making your other character fixes. If you see an incorrect version of the same name (such as Olaf/Olav -- and I know both were used historically, but we have to think in terms of name linking in CK II) then you can just edit the name as part of your actual bug report; ie a character having a missing marriage or the wrong birth/death dates.

There are numerous errors of this nature across most character files, and I'm slowly trying to correct them.

EDIT: @Veld. Just saw your reply. Fine.
