Just a few thoughts about AI and war that I would like to see in EU 2.
First of all I really disliked the fact that the AI seemed to declare war first and then build troops in EU1.
This made a huge difference in my wars with Spain, since they seemed to be taken by surprise in their colonies every time they declared war.
This way the war was over even before Spain could make their move in Europe.
Another thing I would like to see is a "lag" between colonies and Europe in war,
that is a few weeks between someone declares war on you and you can order your troops to move.
This should not be the case when you declare war though.
I do not know if this is possible to code, but the time it takes to sail from Europe to
America or Asia with your current naval tech would be ideal ?

I don't think the lag should be implemented, but they should correct the AI declaring war and then building troops.

I think the "lag" is super! I am a fan of making it more complex though....

Also, I must agree... The AI needs to learn to get the troops ready before it declares war!

I can't imagine the lag thing working without a complete rewrite of the game and it's structure. Everything would have to be given as orders which take time to arrive at their targets etc.

As for building armies before DoWing, yes, something like that definately needs to be implemented. Much of it could be encompassed in a more general topic of AI "vision" (as someone in another thread called it, maybe Spruce?). The AI should have a plan sometimes. Not necessarily for everything, but just because the AI decides it wants to declare war (for instance), doesn't mean it should do so right away, maybe it should make some preparations first then DoW once they are complete. A similar algorithm should be applied to many AI actions.

The AI should remember to replace the armies it lost in one war before launching the next, ie' build armies in peacetime. I don't think I've ever seen the AI do this (those huge minor country armies are all built while the country is at war with no way to reach the enemy.....they just keep building troop, even when they've reached the supply limit.)

The AI is just dumb when it comes to the military side of the game in EU.

Humourous, I trust?

Since what the AI does militarily in peace-time is.............virtually nothing. Certainly it rarely builds troops in peacetime, with the result that it is always handicapped with regard to the human player.

Some of the small countries build troops like mad during peace time.

No, they don't-normally they are at war with somebody they can't (or occasionally won't) get to.

Occasionally, you may be correct......but not generally.

I'm pretty sure he was being facetious.

The point was that you said the AI was dumb in the military side of the game, and he was implying that it was just as dumb if not dumber in the peace side.

It isn't so bad for the AI not to keep a large standing army (though it would be nice if it kept a few cannon since they are cheap to maintain and time consuming to build), but it is about to declare war it should certainly go through a period of build-up.
