At the moment we have things like europe and far east being totally unknown to each other despite numerous instances of communication:

Silk road,marco polo,roman emissaries,alexanders conquests,mongol conquests etc...

While it could be justified in the earlier middle ages by 1444 there was no mistery regarding the landmass.

So i propose that the eurasian landmass be visible to all tech groups that live on it since the level of trade was sufficient for all the peoples to interact enough for basic knowledge of the regions to be exchanged.

Basic knowledge, but not detailed knowledge.

And sometimes even the basic knowledge was still utterly incorrect. European mapmakers were still putting a "Cathay" ruled by a "Great Khan" on their maps in portions of Northern China as late as 1626!

I feel like another form of terra incognita could be used for areas that the people were aware of, but didn't know the exact details of. Simliar to how Europe knew that India and China existed, and pretty accurate details of where, but didn't know who owned what. As it stands, the map implies that Europe was equally aware (that is completely unaware) of India's location as it was of the location of the new world. Maybe a dark brown /blue overlay could be used and have an outline of the land /water that Europe knew existed in 1444, even if it didn't have exact details of who owned what. Stuff like the New World, Southern Africa, and the Pacific Islands (maybe including Japan) area would remain covered, but Mesopotamia, Persia, and the rest of the Silk Road Route would be under the new overlay for a standard west europe start.

Maybe we could have the far off areas shown only as terrain so skip over the lack of political information and if the borders advanced close enough they would get to see the nations of the region.

Well it would not matter to much, if there is Terra Incognita or not, you know what are there anyway.

For me Terra Incognita is more of a tool to say who you are close enugh to interact with, and how far your people is willing to travel, you could might as well remove all terra incognita, (Unless you have random new world) and do like in CK2 with the "To distant to interact with"

Not that i want TI to get removed, I think its pretty, and its a good indicator to how far you can interact with other countries, you dont have such an indicator in CK2.

Edit. And i know some few people were willing to travel that far, but only so few that it not made a major inpact on trade and diplomacy. That could be simulated with events tho.

Or Terra Australiaris Incognita!
