So I've run into an issue of vassals unable to support themselves economically. They've been consistently starving and lacking consumer goods, giving big penalties to happiness, production, etc. I've attempted to help solve it by donating supplies to them, which helps for a short bit - then they fully dive back into imploding. I'll note they fail to make any military ships as well. I suspect the main reason is they get the bonuses from grand admiral - then immediately fall into no bonuses as a vassal.

Not sure how I should avoid this. I could avoid vassals entirely, but I'm hoping someone here knows more about how to get around it. Or experience in setting up vassals. Typically I attack an empire with claims/conquest, take their territory, then immediately place it as a vassal. Usually has several planets/systems within to support it.

I'll add that I'm using Glavius's AI as well (might be a factor).

A problem I'm having with a vassal along these lines is that, since like my empire they're xenophobic, they enslave pretty much every POP except for a handful of my own species I "imported" (to get rid of the "xenophobic bigots" penalty), leaving all of the existing processed goods industry unstaffed. I even made sure I turned every race they had to Residence before releasing them, but they go full North Korea immediately, crippling themselves.

I'd really prefer if a vassal kept all its bonuses (or at least some of them). Not only would they be more useful then, but they would also have an actual chance of breaking free from the player. Without any bonuses the vassal may just as well be removed from the game.

My vassals have been running deficits from overbuilding districts, far beyond the number of pops they have to fill the jobs. This costs them big time in energy maintenance for those districts.

I play as an HRE-like feudal society right now (8 self created vassals so far) and I haven't notice this problems.

But I miss boni for having vassals. They contribute to nothing anymore. They don't give +20% Naval Capacity and with the changes in Domination, I don't get any boni in the future, also no extra trade value.

It is a shame...

I really hope they address this. The last time I took a vassal wasn't because I needed resources but because

1.) I didn't want to spend a lot of influence claiming all their territory.

2.) I didn't want to deal with all those extra planets.

the way i tried solving the vassals are useless problem at the early game start, was to create vassal, than release them, then gift them resources and sign research agreement, with the hope they will expand out. But even tho, they were still sitting there doing nothing but building starbases and defence platforms instead of expanding, than later asked for protectorate after they fallen way behind.

have not tried this in 2.2 yet

One of my vassals also just collapsed. They only had one planet and could not expand further. I just picked up the Feudal Society civic (which enables vassals to expand) to help them, but I guess it was too late.

A new one system empire has formed out of the ashes of my former vassal. Which I think is kind of cool. Guess I will let him grow a bit and then I will annex him later.

About the bonus from vassals. Not sure about the Navy Capacity, but at least they are bringing their fleets to my wars.

Every time I make tribute an empire with equivalent economy, they would become pathetic economy very quickly, and do nothing.

So it's best that please let the AI keeps their difficulty bonus so they could still play and break free somehow.

Vassals cannot expand without feudal realm civic, btw.

Vassals won't expand into new systems unless you use the Feudal Society civic.

Prior to 2.2, vassals gave you some nice bonuses with the Domination tree and they could even build habitats and megastructures if you dumped enough resources on them. These days I rarely even see a vassal with a construction ship. You have to subsidize them massively if you want them to do anything.

I hear that the Glavious AI mod helps (sorry Glavious didn't check spelling).
Does anybody know a mod that allows vassals to keep bonuses?
I'm not sure it would be that OP as they woke have a better chance of braking free at higher levels.

Tributaries are superior for wide play. They don't do much but provide some energy and minerals to you, and, since they aren't driven into your wars, serve as a bump for your foes. Not much use beside some tactical advantage and admin-free chopping of your foes.

Megacorps, on another hand, can help their subsidiaries by constructing branch offices, giving immediate benefits to both sides.
