What if instead of five levels that can be changed once in a lifetime we had 6 but with the following limits:
1-2 - available to everyone;
3 - available at legalism lvl1;
4 - available at legalism lvl2;
5 - available at legalism lvl3;
6 - available at legalism lvl4.

That might make it considerably more difficult to max-out Crown Authority in a century.

Thoughts?

I think that's quite similar to how CK+ handles crown authority.

Preventing inheritance to foreign realms (is that high or absolute?) and primogeniture.

As I said before, inheritance to foreign realms is moot considering the expansionist viewpoint, and primogeniture is worse than elective, which you can have for free.

So maybe you are cranking up CA for gameplay reasons, but not for strategic reasons. The better strategy for expansion is pacifying your vassals, not making them hate you.

I agree high CA makes the game unfun/boring for everyone except the Emperor/King in question.

That said can anyone tell me how to mod the Negative opinion modifier for CA? I'd like to Double the negatives at Med, High and Absolute.

Thanks

That is probably not a good idea. I doubt it would deter the ai so you might just end up plunging the ai into an everlasting cycle of civil war.

The only answer:
Constantly expand by inviting claimants or fabricating claims, educate your vassals' heirs yourself to get good traits and an opinion bonus from them (as well as curtailing the -50 "ambitious" penalty), and by revoking and imprisoning old revolters.
That if you are the liege... I like to start as a lowly one province count and become a big duke, but i rarely go for kingdoms or empires (in HRE or ERE).

yes yes. I agree. twitch CA and make it harder to raise the d*** thing! I tried to play many game remaining as dukes in HRE or Russia, or where-ever, and the d*** kings/emperors keep raising CA. One time CA got to absolute, so, as duke of tangier, I cant even attack Mauritania! The CA as it stands is absurd. Every time I try to play peacefully, the AI has to ruin it by raising CA to the point I almost always have to gain independence.

Anyhow.

Per the argument involving high vs. low CA. I would go for low CA and elective most of the time. The other times, I try to crank absolute and primo cuz' I like fighting revolts :)

CK2+ goes the harsh way with the HRE; the HRE can't raise CA above Low.

which is?

Not having vassals fight each other, revoking infidel titles, not losing land to foreign inheritances. But anyway like you said your comment was based on an expansionist viewpoint, so I guess people are hot for high CA because some don't go completely expansionist in their games.

One problem I have with crown authority is that the explanation text in the game talks about "curtailing the power of the high nobility" (which is electors, right?) and giving it to the sovereign and the lower nobility.

In reality that's not quite how it works: higher crown authority only takes troops from the dukes, most of the other things are also beneficial for them. No inheritances to other realms is usually good, succession law changes always, and revocation of (infidel) titles is as long as they aren't themselves infidel. Only the prohibition of vassal fighting is negative and that only if you are military-expansionist - if you are peaceful it's actually good as well.

IMO, crown authority for dukes and counts shouldn't affect the possible succession laws of that title or revocations of titles (de-jure) under it. Or maybe the effect should even be opposite, or something.
