I too had problems with crashes. I tried re-installing but it didn´t help. Then I remembered having similar problems with another Paradox game - Svea Rike III, that I solved by doing this: just close/ exit all Auto-run programs in Windows tool-bar (furtherst to the right). Now, my EU II runs smoth without glitches. Hope this will help some of you people!?
