Another thing to consider: Even with only one AI empire at the start, more will appear over the course of the game due to primitives reaching FTL technology and becoming empires in their own right. This however usually takes quite long and it is highly unlikely that those huge empires in your game are former primitives. There's probably another reason for why it looks the way it looks, but I just wanted to note that you will not have a static number of empires/"players" as you would in non-grand-strategy games.

No i Turn the fallen empires to 0 ... besides if i setup for one opponent ftl shouldnt enter into it one enemy in the whole universe created....
and if so.. i mean if that would be really the case, and the pre ftl still max you out in question of tech and beat you, well.. then you are probably the most bad player ever

my bet is, you set AI empires to max., advanced AI too, with advanced neighbours active.. thats the only thing what could be, what you describe

It sounds like you just don't know how to play the game. That's easy enough coming into any new Paradox title without prior experience in a closely related one.

Three things to remember based on my own early stumbling in Stellaris:

1. Building and upgrading research stations is vital. Fill up unused blank tiles with them as long as your energy isn't too low. And override surplus food tiles once a planet hits max population. You can't rely on orbital stations.
2. EXPAND EXPAND EXPAND. You cannot compete as a small empire in this game. Expanding is always the better choice, especially if there is only one other AI. If there are lots of AIs, then you could probably stop at 15-20 worlds, and get by on alliances or a federation. If there is just one normal AI, they will eat the entire galaxy, then eat you.
3. Read the wiki. Read the wiki about everything.

You have advanced start AI turned on. That or you are insanely slow at expanding.

Well for one we only get 5 galaxies to start with so your limited until you can research expand galaxy by 1 which takes for ever to get too.
two. i posted the start and partly played screeens above and AI is set to minimum level.

i have been baeting every strategy game sinnce christ was a mess cook. i mean my first stratefy game was on a main frame (before PCs were invented) called space wars
it was based on star trek and i had to plot the course of my photon torpedoes (not as easy as it may seem)

ummmmmmmmmmmm SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I did edit the file for the setup and modified the screeen size (SSHHHHHH) and now i can see my task bar at bottom of screen YAY

well i will try a ganme and build that many science labs but as i just wrote i get 5 galaxies to start max expansion but it takes ages for the research to get 1 more at a time.

Paradox games are highly complex. Not very deep, usually, but there's a ton of bells and whistles that no manual or tutorial will easily teach you. Basic mechanics and basic strategy are often unintuitive, and without forums or wikis or friends with more experience, it's possible to play dozens of hours without realizing what you're doing wrong, because there are a ton of things that you could be doing wrong, and the right thing to do isn't intuitive at all.

well i will try a ganme and build that many science labs but as i just wrote i get 5 galaxies to start max expansion but it takes ages for the research to get 1 more at a time.

Do you mean 5 star systems?

You need to get more, and place them under sectors*. You absolutely cannot win with just 5 systems. Your research will be slower, your fleets will be smaller, you'll be like Denmark vs. Nazi Germany.

*Alternatively you could play with a Pacifist oligarchy and get up to 15 core systems without needing sectors (and at 15 systems you miiiiiight be able to compete in a crowded galaxy).

If it is the case that you are not colonizing more that 5 systems, then that would be the root of your problem. You are not limited to only those 5 systems. And then don't stop. Keep expanding as much as you can. The more systems you have, the bigger your fleet can be (don't forget to build the spaceports and upgrade them). Then take over the galaxy! If you want to :)
Here's an example from an old save. It was a tiny galaxy to force the Prethoryn crisis which I had never seen before that. But notice that even though I still have the 5 system limit, I have 3 sectors with a total of 57 colonies.

I don't really want to sound like an asshole but... I'm pretty sure the guy is just a troll. I am suppoted in this idea by the fact that his profile does not say anything about actually owning Stellaris. Also...

research expand galaxy by 1

OK well, if we assume he is not an actual troll, but having difficulty, what I don't understand is how he could get all those different empires when his start setup is for only ONE total AI empire of any sort. Where did the rest of them come from?

If this is really happening to him, that he asks for 1 AI, 0 FE, 0 Advanced AI, and he is getting 13 or 15 empires including some Advanced and maybe even FEs, then there is clearly some sort of problem with either his install of the game, or a more general bug. If this is really happening to him I don't think we can just chalk it up to 'he is just bad at the game' as some people have been saying.

Could it be a mod? I know that my friend and I tried to use one of the non-clustering AI start mods and it completely effed up co-op starts for us, so we had to turn it off.

If you only have 1 AI, that leaves more planets for primitives, especially on a large galaxy. Thus, a larger amount of early space age primitives which eventually become AI empires. I've seen some pop up in the first 20 years of game play. They could expand that far on his map in what could be hundreds of game years for the rest of them to advance. Sounds like a very long peaceful game of exploring and doing anomaly events. Until someone comes by and wants your planets, heh.

Gday no i dont ever use mods in any games. i have been thinking that it is some sort of bug and i really wanted second opinion on wether it was a bug before i reported it.
