Hi Perplexed - when playing via steam I think the key to take screenshots is F12 so try that - give us a look at how you set up your games and then an empire of yours say 30/40 years in.

You really shouldn't be getting annexed in 20 years on a single AI game with no Fallen Empires, but make sure you turn off clustered starts just in case.

On normal difficulty just doing normal things (expending steadily, researching core techs, building space ports, keeping fleet at or near the fleet cap) you really shouldn't have much difficulty at least getting to the end game crisis...

I might be completely wrong on this, it's just a speculation. But might it be "wild" aliens you are losing against? You didn't state if it was your planets or just your fleet that was destroyed. Early game wild aliens, such as pirates, space amoeba and crystals can be quite hard to kill if you don't exactly know what you're doing.

are you building too many science ships? are you upgrading your spaceports and building military fleets to your fleet capacity?

That might just be it, I know the event pirates that sometimes show up after a few years can be a pain in the ass if you don't plan for them.

Geesh demanding arent you ok ok ill do it ( Thinks about where he would like to open an umbrella)
We cannot help you without actually knowing what you're experiencing, and a picture is worth a thousand words. If full-fledged empires are spawning when you've got them set not to, that's a bug and should be reported- but if its something like you encountering pre-FTL civilizations that "aged up" into proper empires, that requires a different form of addressing matters.

will be interested to see what happens. With those settings there's a good chance of not even finding another space-faring race within 20 years (not counting the space critters, pirates etc), let alone getting into and losing a war against them...

dont think that 20 years is enough time for a space age / new empire to get that much territory. either a bug or maybe when you started that game you forget to set the settings. every time you hit new game they revert to default so you would have had to set AI to 1 and FA to 0 again

yeah, I've got no idea how that's even possible with that game setup. How long had gone by? Can we see the top bar as well so we can get a feel for your empires production and the date?

Well i have been playing strategy games for over 40 years ( i didnt take offense to commewnt) but im finding it hard to get good when i am over run or made a serf in the first 20 years by AI mnore advanced than i am the research takes so ffn long i dont stand a chance if i could start further away from AI start areas maybe i would have more of a chance to build better ships etc. Just seems to me even on low setting its almost impossible to get a foot hold large enough to defend against all these superior and overwhelming puter AIs that have so many even tho i setup for 1... maybe i should stick to.... Global Thermo Nuclear War

Old games are a lot harder than New games, especially when it comes to strategy which mostly boils Down to exploits at harder difficulties such as making yourself vassal to a FA get all the Techs and then destroy everything. Don't know any strategy games from the 70's, I played some strategy games in the 80's on a BBC micro but they were really shit compared to the Arcade style games. Wasn't until I played Dune 1 and Civilization 1 that I was completely enthranced With strategy games ever since, but damn these games were hard.

If you are having trouble at normal difficulty then as other players suggested it is Your play style, you need to chose your planets better, take planets With most Food first since they will grow faster, and focus on Research more. One thing I only learned after 1 year of playing the game is how damn important the labs are. I always thought they were redundant With the Research bases and I kept losing the Tech war in multiplayer, so I studied my opponents planets and sure enough they always have 3-4 labs on every planet and always chose the "lab resarch Upgrade" Tech if available. Now I'm always Equal to most other players or superior and always superior compared to AI even at Hard difficulty whereas before I always just focused on most mineral+energy.
