So I am playing as the evil Third Reich, when I suddenly get the message that the "Socialist Republic of Turkey" has cancelled their NAP with me. Where did these guys come from? Did I miss something? I didn't see an event for this (I have historical events displayed in boxes), and I'm not entirely sure where it came from. So... what the heck is this Turkish Communist business?

Nope, the USSR has a NAP with Turkey, but no evidence of puppeting, occupation or war, the colours are just the same.

Edit: whoops, misread that couped as a mispelled occupied. I'm not sure if they couped them. Does the ai do that in this game?

Indeed, and that popularity is a result of Gen. Kemal Ataürk, who was still alive at the time of that screenie (he died a few months later). So it's almost like they... overthrew him... now that is impossible to believe no matter what.

I've just found similar strange thing. As i played played as Yugoslavia in 1939. i found Soviet Union became national socialist Russia, with czarist flag and Andrei Vlassov as head of state. Also Germany never demanded Danzig, so there is no war.

the crescent moon and the star is not an islamic symbol, its forbidden to associate islam with symbolism as far as the true islam goes. the crescent moon was adopted by the ottoman empire and since then islamic countries have been adopting it. maybe to show respect to the last caliphate, but again, the crescent moon and the star are in fact pagan symbols just like the cross and star of david.

And the Magen David was even used in a few Anatolian Turkic kingdoms, such as Karaman and that other one. You see them in EU III. They confused me for a while until I looked them up. Wait though, when did they put that circular crescent on top of the Dome of the Rock? Was that an Ottoman addition?

yep they'r all ottoman decorations. many muslims would claim its something to do with ramadan and that the start of that holy month begins with a new crescent moon(hilal). while this might be true, all months are regarded important in islam so therefore there is no reason to even pick it as a symbol. either way the fact about the symbol has nothing to do with islam. the symbol has something to do with greece and moon/sun/venus worship. before islam the turks of istanbul took the symbol from greece and set it as their city symbol before islam. later when the muslims conquered istanbul the caliphate at that time liked it and used it for his empire.

since then its been associated with islam.

Well copying the Greeks isn't exactly a new trend. :p You do also have the fact that the Arab calender is a lunar-based one (as is the Hebrew one, but we add a month called II Adar everysooften to keep our holidays in about the same timespan), so they could have used that as a justification (if they felt the need to justify themselves).

It is possible. UK couped me ( USSR ) and I've become Russia, ten seconds later, all other countries seceded from Russia ( Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia...). That was sick and it was in 1938. Also I've couped with USSR - Yugoslavia ( became SFRY ) and Romania ( Socialist Republic of Romania, problems occur in a second Moldavian provinces are rebelious and People's Republic of Bulgaria ). Regarding fascist countries, never played with Germany so I don't know.

Coups are possible in this game. I've seen quite a few too. I guess socialist republic of Turkey is probably one of the most common (a clever target for the Soviet AI) as this was the coup that brought it to my attention that the AI used them. When I played the SU I used them wherever I could - a communist Ireland proved to be a useful naval base for me landing some troops in Belgium to complete an epic kessel. :D
