Social Division, Civil Strife, and Class Struggle - Chapter 1
Chapter 1 - The Setting Stage
Closing her eyes the woman (?) sighs. She was trying so hard damn it. So how had things gone so wrong? The Great Depression was not her fault god damn it! How could it have been? Had she not done enough? Hell, how much was enough? When it would it pay off? But . . . would it even be the right choice? Would that choice pay off in the end? How could she know? She looks away from the desk and sighs again. She only had, What - Half a Year Left until the Elections? Yes, if she could hold on until then . . . it might be enough. She could relax after this was over. Yes, Perhaps Just one more Try. Her eyes open. The clock ticked by silence yet loud. Taking a deep breath, ". . . Charles?" Responding faithfully, another more older woman walked over, eyes brimming with confidence "Yes Mr. President?"
The woman tiredly responds "Give me the situation report - How is America Doing?" The other woman, now known as Charles, winces for a second "Everything sir?" Blinking she quickly reaches towards her papers, She takes a deep breath and - "With Extra Sugar Please" The briefest glance of amusement and Charles reluctantly sighs "If you wish . . . Mr. President." Taking a moment to re-organize herself she begins.
"In short - The United States is in the midst of its worst political turbulence -" "You Don't Say?" The woman sarcastically snorts. Charles twitches in annoyance "If you will let me finish - Since 1865. Few Expected this after America successfully avoided the Weltkreig but the rise of Syndicalsim fomented a Red Scare and an economy and an economy depressed by nonstop worker strikes and political crackdowns. You won the 1928 election promising a return to normalcy but with the Great Panic of 1928 occurring you appear to have made no headway and your re-election via the House of Representatives has only damaged your legitimacy."
She pauses to breathe - and Momentarily, the younger woman gazes away in thought Are things really this bad? Charles takes another breath as she continues.
"Now US Politics is challenged by numerous radical forces, all of whom promise in their own way to end politics as we know it if elected."
Again the clock ticks.
A similar flow of amusement, a light Schadenfreude, shows through her face "Do you need more Sugar Mr. President?" She stays silent for a few moments, staring at the desk. She sighs and focuses ". . . Continue."
"Starting from left to right - The Great Depression. As a result of both constant political strife and the banking crash of 1929, the United States Economy remains in turmoil."
Hebert winces lightly, maybe this was not such a good idea- "Political Turmoil. The United States is in crisis. The Great Depression, which has been ravaging our nation for over a decade, has still not let up. Popular desperation has allowed the far-left Socialist Party of America, the Populist AFP, and the far-right ODP Party to gain strength in recent years. Others look to MacArthur and the Army as a way to solve both the depression and radicalization. Many worries that the United States could descend into civil war should our current situation not soon be resolved, or a radical presidential candidate wins in the upcoming 1936 elections.
"Furthermore, we face a problem with Syndicalist Strikes. They (The Strikes) have been plaguing our nation for decades at this point, and with the economy in shambles, they've only continued to radicalize and grow, with the SPA continuing to skyrocket in membership over these past few decades, these strikes aren't going anywhere; and what's worse is that thanks to the power of the SPA, there's no hope of Busting. All we can do is sit and hope that they go back to work."
Hebert stared at her, "Is that -" She interrupts
"Next is our hold over the South. The KKK has been a thorn in the government's side ever since the civil war - since its beginning as a simple terrorist organization, the KKK has in all but the name become a political force in the south, with them used as yet another tool in Dixie's box. Normally, the northern Democrats have been able to make them heel outside of the south, but with the economy in shambles, it seems the klan is no longer content to keep its southern way of life in the south."
". . . Is there anything else?" Hebert responds. She shakes her head "Unless you want to read more about the Parties?" Silence.
"Fine. Just make it brief. Please." She nods, shifting around her papers -
"Right, First We Have the Socialist Party of America - they have 3 factions, Vanguards, The IWW, and The Independents.

Hebert blinks surprised, that was a surprisingly short introduction "Is there any more information regarding-" Charles, however, interrupts "You did say to keep it short. . . unless?" She quickly shakes her head in response "No, No that's fine, continue, please." Charles nods, slightly disappointed "Very well."
"Loosely associated with the SPA is the Progressive Party -
Progressive Party |
---|
George Norris |
Social Democratic - Advocates a "Fair Deal", Populism To Farmers |
"Next we have our party - The Republican Party - split into two factions - Social Liberal and Market Liberal."

|
"Next is the Democratic Party - our old rivals - and the America First Party.

Faction Leader: John Nance Garner | Faction Leader: Huey Long the "Kingfish" |
Social Conservates - Advocates against everyone, doesn't like interventionism, In Favour of Austerity. | Authoritarian Democracy - Advocates for his "Sharing our Wealth" Program, Social Programs, Free Education, and the Redistribution of Wealth. |
"-Okay now for the last . . . faction." Grimacing, she continues, "The Old Democratic Party is comprised of -
Old Democratic Party | ODP National White League |
Faction Leader: William H. Murray | Faction Leader: Hebert Armstrong |
Paternal Autocrats - Advocates for not liking banks, corporations, and Political corruption. Really doesn't like Communists, Corporations, or Miscegenation | National Populists - Advocates for liking the KKK, lynchings, and Christian National Identity. |
". . . And that should settle the factions." (Other) Hebert slumps in her chair "Can we move on to the other stuff?" Charles finally shrugs "If your sure Mr. President."
She once again flicks through her pages "For the Army, We only have the National Guard and a garrison on the Canal. . . for political reasons, of course, the army strength is limited."
"The navy is . . . quite disorganized, untrained, and some ships are quite outdated, but overall we have a somewhat respectable size."
"The airforce is struggling, and the Naval Air Force is practically non-existent - but we are working on expanding production in these areas. Furthermore, the assigned research program is proceeding surprisingly nicely, and we should have some basic prototypes in the next few months."
Charles sighs as she finishes. ". . . Do you think this is going to work Mr. President?"
Hebert takes a moment to respond. "Things are going to heat up this year, I can feel it. So many things are happening, We are on a bloody time limit! I don't know what's going to happen if I can't fix things!"
She pounds the desk in frustration "Kerensky was assassinated, there are crime sprees around the nation, King George is Dead, A Charter of Total Idiots met to discuss how best to suppress freedom and no one seems to want to do anything about that! They just care about the bloody Winter Olympics in Riga!" She calms down and sighs. "I've already promised to pass the (Garner-Wagner) Bill, Charles, what am I supposed to do? Long and Haywood kept bloody pushing me . . . It was better we go to the bloody devil in red we know than the angel in white we trust." She Slumps in her chair. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have lost my temper, It's just -" "It's Fine Mr. Presdent-"
"I understand. . . I just - I just hope everything will work in the end, Even if we don't win, then hopefully - hopefully America will still be the same, if not intact at the end of the storm. We can only hope."
