Victoria 1.2 does need balancing. Feel free to tackle that in a week or so.

Paradox can either put a date on patches (and get a hundred whines when they miss a date for whatever reason), or keep to their current policy of "patches are released when they're done", which has worked fine for years.

It's the same answer I give for my work. When it's done.

Yes, I´m sure they are making patches, but I´m getting tired fo half finished games and being charged for things that barely makes the game playable. I want what I paid for, if I buy a car, I don´t want to pay extra for the wheels... And then wait two months.

Out of interest, what would you do if the car broke down?

Let's not get carried away here... Swertinge's protests do have a kernel of truth. Paradox does have a tendency towards releasing games in urgent need of patches, that issue is not disputed and goes back in time, way before other dev teams were enlisted in the Paradoxian empire. For example, older fans will remember that the version of EU2 originally released, was practically unplayable, as diplo-annexation just didn't work and crashed the game :) .
The fact that the dev. teams have multiplied, on the other hand, is not negative. It allows for a steady stream of releases and income, the lifeblood of any company. That said though, i do agree that each dev. team should probably focus on a more stable and balanced first release of its project and a fast correction of faults with subsequent patches that should not take months to be produced. After all, the original release is supposed to be a complete product, not a work in progress.
It is true that Paradox puts emphasis on keeping the games alive via constant support through the forum. This should be a given for any company but it is not, so Paradox is very highly commented for that. That care, after all, is why some of us have been in these boards for almost a decade, supporting the company even by purchasing games we know we will never play ( L&G anyone? :) ). Under that light, constructive criticism should always be allowed, even if some times it sounds exasperated. While patience and support on the part of fans like most of us here, should be expected and granted, the same can not be expected by new comers to Paradox. As an example, try to imagine a gamer who knows nothing about Paradox, but decides to give HoI3 a try, maybe after seeing some screenshots or something... Does anybody believe that the original HoI3 release could hook him to Paradox games? True, HoI3 has vastly improved through patches and Semper Fi, but i doubt he would have the patience to stick around for those....Him being gone though, Paradox instantly loses the potential future income from a dedicated fan...
As Paradox grows into a major studio (i think it already is, in the strategy genre), care for such expediences should be increased. Flagship titles should always be prioritized, since they are the ones who will bring in new customers. Personally, my first Paradox game out of about 25, was EU I, and I would be willing to bet that most of the fans here got hooked because of an EU, HoI or Vicky title, not because of Ship Simulators Extreme, despite the latter's superior trailer :)

Angelos: I have yet to have a game crash in Victoria 2. I have yet to have any data corruption. Every game I've played has been enjoyable. Not sure what more I can ask for.

The balancing issues in V2 are complex and they are, quite simply, not as simple as fixing a couple lines in text files. Releasing a bunch of micro-patches essentially makes it more likely that they unbalance things, not less.

My guess is that they are working hard to not only provide a huge batch of fixes in 1.3 (1.2 was huge), but also try and get the economy and population issues under control. It's probably a similar investment of time and effort as VRRP has been thus far, and that is a mammoth forum undertaking.

Plus, Ship Simulator Extremes is not produced in-house, it's a published game. Zero amount of coding time from Paradox-developed games is taken away by coding that title.

I love vicky 2. The problem is, and I gather this is a common problem, is that 1/3 of the game becomes unplayable. This is something I have trouble understanding letting through. Things like UBER! Britain can be irritating, but they aren't game breaking and are pretty easily worked around (I use a mod). Minor bugs don't really bother me. But when 1/3 of the game just cannot be played, it frustrated me, because I'd really love to be able to play that later 1/3

None of my comments was referring to Vicky 2. I still haven't played the game, as snowfall in the UK has prevented my boxed game from coming all the way to Greece yet :(
Aside from that, there is absolutely no reason for you to defend Paradox to me :) I have been a member of the forum for nine years, and intend to be around for at least as many. Moreover, my collection of about 30 Paradox games and expansions (counting those unregistrable oldies), probably makes my attitude towards the Paradox team and community abundantly clear...

@ safferli : I am aware of that :) That has nothing to do with the truth of the point though, does it?

I find that paradox supports its games with patches and expansions long after other game companies have moved on. That's why I've been here for almost 9 years.

I agree completely with this! Except I have been here for 9 almost 10 years. Over the years their dedication to improving and patching their games is exemplary and I cannot think of a single game company that makes such complicated games work so well, with such a small staff, even if it takes time.

Even if we have some people that run to Paradox aid what ever, there seems to be some that agree. Victoria 2 is not finished by far and HOI3 is so-so...
I´m sorry if I hurt someone´s feelings (Paradox dev team should be above this...?), but I am a paying costumer, an unhappy paying costumer and don´t piss on me saying it is rain, which is what you do with Victoria 2.

Oh my God, is it really what you think we should talk about? Well, I go to the garage to have it fixed... But Victoria didn´t break down, it never worked...

This is, well, just so far from the truth. V2 is the most finished game Paradox ever made, and after it got it's first patch, it's near perfect. In what way is the game "unfinished" or "broken" or "never worked"? Now, HoI3 was a different story. However, they really showed that they've learned from it with the release of V2.

1.1 was far from working properly, but 1.2 was a major step forward. It still has issues and I'm not fully satisfied by it, but now it's a working game, and let's not forget that 1.3 is in the making, so we can't give final verdict to Vicky2 yet.

Also, I'd like to hear what stratigo means when he says that 1/3 of the game is unplayable.

Though some of the criticism is justified. If I were to judge all of the previous current engine games (EU3, EU: Rome, HOI3) solely by vanilla versions without expansions, I'd give a negative to all of them. Ideally I wouldn't have to buy a game and then least one expansion pack to make it worth my time. Happily it seems like Vicky2 is breaking this trend if 1.3 fixes majority of my remaining grievances.

Even if we have some people that run to Paradox aid what ever, there seems to be some that agree. Victoria 2 is not finished by far and HOI3 is so-so...
I´m sorry if I hurt someone´s feelings (Paradox dev team should be above this...?), but I am a paying costumer, an unhappy paying costumer and don´t piss on me saying it is rain, which is what you do with Victoria 2.
From what I've heard, all the games you consider terrible and in need of a patch which you suddenly disagree with are very good. I think Paradox should be proud of their games, and if you don't like what they make don't buy it. I fail to see why the Devs should be above being offended; they're people too, and if you say something offensive they will naturally be insulted.

Have you played past 1900? He's probably talking about the massive performance hit you get as the game goes on.

IMHO, 1.1 was fun, but started getting tedious due to rebels around 1870. 1.2 is fun, but gets tedious due to slowness around 1900.

Extrapolating this, 1.3 will make the game good till 1930. This is 94% of the game. :p

Just got my Vicky 2 (yay :) ), patched it to 1.2 and intend to give it a serious try, but it does seem stable so far. I haven't encountered the performance issues mentioned yet, but i would expect to. Considering the gameplay depth, the added burden of gorgeous graphics could easily send performance out the window. I am confident that future patches will fix Vicky 2, but the issue must be taken under consideration for all future games. After all, i believe we all prefer gameplay to graphics here, don't we?
