So why aren't bombards available from the start?

Feels weird how in Crusader Kings III, late medieval tech introduces bombards as the final siege weapon. Yet EU4 thinks nobody thought to build them until 1492. :confused:

I like to think it's because the devs want to give Byzantium a slim chance; No chance to siege down Edirne if they've got cannon at the start :)

They do exist in the game, along with other siege equipment. They are deployed during the sieges only and not of any combat use. It's how you can get a wall breach without having any artillery units in the army.

Bombards were not useful in pitched battles, because they weren't mobile. Artillery tech in EUIV represents the development of mobile field artillery.

Sieging siege exists as a modifier in sieges, and you could explain general siege pips as the dude knowing how to better use these engines of war.

Artillery are mobile siege pieces that the army carries around to help in battle and with sieges. This is trying to represent, to some degree, how artillery became much more common on the European battlefields.

Lastly, the Ottomans have an Age ability on the first age which gives them a lot of siege ability, making sieges end a heck of a lot faster.

In Maurice Druon's books (which are more novel than history) under Philippe IV of France and his sons (mid XIVth century), the bombards in battle mostly made noise rather than damages.

For some reason you cant get the "wall breach" siege result if your army doesnt have any artillery units before mil tech 7. So the argument that the army does have "hidden" siege weapons doesnt seem true.

But when i mouse over the siege progress, it does NOT list "wall breach" as a possible outcome? If you mouse over the success %, does it say wall breach is a possible outcome?

Edit : Hmm maybe wall breach is not listed there at all.

It's a balance consideration. Without Artillery to speed up sieges, early wars take longer. This gives smaller nations a better chance to survive, before the big players can start steamrolling everyone.
