I actually read about Sengoku when I was looking for information about SotSII on your forums many months ago. Of course as you can see I am a long time paradox fan so I am sure I would have encountered it eventually anyway. The main place I hear about games other than random chance like that is on steam/impulse themselves.

I was wondering about this..

We had more preview articles on Sengoku in the press than any title in recent memory, but we couldn't seem to get traffic into the Sengoku forum..

If we make another new game, how would we find YOU and tell you about it?

Build the game and the people will come.

I know that sounds flippant but it's not. If you (continue to) make good games people will want to play them. You can create the biggest media frenzy ever for a game and if it's no good no-one will be playing it in six months time. Don't look at a success as being immediate look at how many people are playing the game in two years (or twenty) time. Word will spread and you will see more sales, if not for this title then the next one, or the one after that. Every bit of effort you put into 'promoting' the game (ok I know reality dictates that you will do some...) is a bit of effort you are not putting into making better games. End of story.

p.s. I personally found the game when I was browsing through the titles at gamersgate. Then I checked it out, mainly by this forum and the developer diairies.

If we make another new game, how would we find YOU and tell you about it?

I'm a PI forum stalker, so i'll definatly hear about it as soon as it's announced ;) Also, i think Sengoku has had the benefit of some of Shogun's fans. I've seen large amount of topics discussing the release of Sengoku in Total War related forums. (twcenter.net)

Another way to reach out could be a reference program. A Paradox fan contacts him friends/associates and informs then about Sengoku and then sends them to a specific link in which they can get read about the game and it's features. The user who helped attract new players get's a discount bonus from a specific net-dealer (0.3% per invite) This has worked largely for me in various other games in which some of my friends refered me to a game and they themselves gain a benefit.

Yet another suggestion could be to promote Facebook advertisement. If you, like said above offer user some discount of the ability to win something if they post a link to Sengoku, then you can increase the flood of information throughout Facebook/Twitter :)

I am surprised that Finland didn't make it to the list. Shame on us!

And to answer Kallocain's question "Where do you go to gain knowledge..": Rock, Paper, Shotgun mostly. Finnish Pelit-magazine was also great source, but I don't subscribe to it anymore and their website sucks.

Well, I found out about it in the catalog, when I was looking for the release date of CK2. I also found out about CK2 there, in the catalog.

Other than that my only other sources are Steam or YouTube.
Only recently I started to frequent the forums.

But they did see it! And talk about the need for instant gratification. (Sorry to antagonise but couldn't help it.) I'm sure you have titles which are still selling well but were released years ago. My point is that if the game is good then the people who have not heard about yet will hear about it, positively. And they will then get it. If the game is no good then those people will hear "don't bother, I got bored quickly" or whatever. The paradox name is also inflected the same.

I apprieciate your interest and hope you get many replies (although this is buried in another big thread...).

Personally I hear about games through
1) word of mouth from other gamers
2) newsletters from places I've bought games
3) developers sites
4) very occasionally review websites
I also actively search at times, through retailers websites, wikipedia or google search, the latter usually if I've got a name and not much else

Thinking about it a bit more, did Sengoku get a review/preview at all on X-play? I don't recall seeing one. If you all are not familiar with it, that is the primary video game review/preview show on G4 TV, a heavily video game related network in the US. Games like Sengoku are not remotely big enough to get their own half hour special, but most new games will get at least a 3-5 minute highlight in there, and all genres are included in the scope of the show.

Well, one thing to try is post about the game in the appropriate forum of a straight history site, like we did for the Samurai Archives. It got a chunk of our members interested in the game and quite a few ended up buying Sengoku.

Word of mouth, via the internet, is a huge source of impromptu game advertising.

I'm not talking about using "Like" on Facebook (does anyone here check their friend's long list of Likes, really?). I'm talking about internet gaming media, blogs, and the most straightforward way I hear about games: Gaming Forums. I've learned about quite a few games I never would've seen at places such as the Wargamer.com forum. Not only that but many people chime in with their likes and dislikes of each one, so it's actual players and not one of some popular site's reviewers being handed a game which they're not interested in, won't bother to learn properly, and who makes a fuss about things that aren't an issue in your opinion.

Paradox has been doing some great promos to raise their visibility lately. I recall they gave out free Crusader Kings Gold keys to everyone signed up for their newsletter here. Myself, and others who already owned it, gave our keys away on such forums to those who were curious about the game but were permanent fence-sitters. I'm pretty sure that garnered some new fans and future sales, and showed how great you guys are to your customers. It also encouraged more people to sign up for your newsletter which equals more advertising right there. :)

One thing I've been thinking is that maybe people didn't realize that Sengoku was a new in-house title? Me, I'm usually not that interested in the titles only published by PI (though I've tried some of them out) and thus generally don't follow those message boards. "Real" PI games though are always exciting to follow during development and I usually end up buying them. So, to wrap it up, maybe you should do more to promote the next game on the boards of the current PI games, and make sure that everyone knows that it's a "real PI" game?

Had I not already been following Paradox, I think social media would be my best bet of finding out about it. Something like the Something Awful forums, Dreddit or Kotaku. Those type of things spread niche related news to me quite well. I got my info from the Paradox newsletter though, something I've come to love recieving.

As for the OP, I'm from the city where worlds are made. Stockholm! =D

I infrequently stalk these forums, particularly around big events to see what's coming. Other gaming sources for me would be the Escapist, Rock,Paper,Shotgun and the videos from TotalBiscuit. Now RPS has a big advertisement for Sengoku running so that's very obvious. Totalbiscuit is not someone who's going to do any video's on Sengoku simply because of the learning curve and the nature of the game. The Escapist dissapoints me sometimes in this regard, though they seem to write for an intelligent enough public, they just don't have that many niche titles.

Maybe get some high profile person on a medium like youtube to make a video (or better yet a series of video's). In that case some will watch it regardless of what it is and you may yet win some over. That would be one way for me to notice the game if I hadn't read about on these forums.
