So when can we expect to be tunneling our way to city building nirvana ?

I would rather wait longer and get a more fluid process of pressing than having to place assets where you want a tunnel. Eg: pressing "down" on the gradient like you do to raise intersections and then if you go only one level down it just creates a sunken road/rail (sunken roads could also reduce noise?) and then if you press "down" again it then creates a tunnel. I think this would make intersections look good as you wouldn't really have a proper tunnel each time you want to go under a road.
Also a good idea. The more I fiddle with my cities the more interested I become in what tunnels will offer.

If anyone has played Cities in Motion, I think that shows pretty much how the new tunnels will work. The current in game placement and features of road and rail above ground is very similar to that, so it makes sense that it will follow the same model. No, I don't think we will see Metros being connected to the surface in that particular patch as the subway tunnels are very simplistic and you can't even change their depth manually.

For those who want things like cuttings for sunken roads and rails, you can do that NOW! Just get the terraforming mod, you can carve out what you like then!

I must say, it's good to hear that they would rather get the main bugs sorted first, most devs would put them asside and release new features like tunnels to try and take attention AWAY from present bugs, nice!

Yes you can do it now but not very easily. Getting a nice smooth cut or embankment for a highway can literally take hours in the map editor. We really need some simpler tools in the terrain editor like those in SC4 and RCT3.
Although I have seen some nice third party map editors that have tools for adding roads to a map. I would prefer doing everything within Cities Skylines.
Edit. The new tool in the latest terraforming mod makes sunken roads easy.

I'd definitely like to see a single Pg Dn just sink a road rather than immediately take it into a tunnel (and depending on terrain, going into a tunnel proper would presumably have a stretch of sunken road before the tunnel portal too). And your question about whether a sunken road would reduce noise pollution is a really important point, and one I hope CO pay proper attention to!

I use the terraforming mod, yeah. My favourite mod yet.

If you'd like a good demonstration of making sunken roads and cuttings, watch this recent Keralis video -

He show's what's possible with a bit of tinkering.
