So when can we expect to be tunneling our way to city building nirvana ?

My guess is before July, since CO is going to take a 1 month holiday on July. They should be finishing squashing all critical launch bug and add in tunnel in the game at Mid June, and prepare finalize the game in a stable state before going to holiday. My guess.

I don't remember but were they included in the last patch that was later rescinded?

No they weren't but I get the impression that they are imminent.

I just hope tunnels can be used to avoid traffic light at intersections..
I would have thought they will behave just like any other road or bridge. If you want to loose traffic lights, simple get the traffic light removal mod, I have it and it works great!

In the interview Mariina said that in July CO won't be working for that whole month but before that they are working 100% on Skylines. So I would guess that the tunnels and maybe back to back R zones will be in the game before then. End of June at the latest.

Thanks for the quick response Simonmd!

If I may ask,
Do you know or did you hear that tunnels would be able to go under/through water? The only reason I ask is this was an issue with that other city building game so I was not sure if this was something no city builder could do or if it was just that other company that could not produce tunnels through water?

JJ

PS
Do you know or have you heard that tunnels would be able to handle trains or are they just going to be for cars & cims?

I seem to remember that both Cities in Motion and Cities in Motion 2 (the two previous games released by CO) allowed roads to be built beneath water. There were some odd graphical glitches with it in the latter where sometimes roads would appear flooded (but Cims/vehicles would still happily use them).

Hopefully CO can find a way to make them work underwater in Skylines, but the full-on water simulation may complicate things (as it's already the given reason for not allowing terraforming in live-play). Who knows?

I really hope tunnels are coming soon, it's desperately needed, sometimes I try to press page down to dig in the ground.. :D
Tunnels for cars, trains, and pedestrians walks would help tremendously my city.

I would just want embankments or cut-aways that roads or rail can sink into. That would be good enough for me in a quick patch if tunnels were more complicated. Tunnels would be good too of course!

I haven't played that much with rail, but I try and keep the gradient as smooth as possible when I have. Does gradient have any effect on rail speed or performance? I usually build road bridges over rail and not the other way around, but that's just because of how it's done in my home city.

Tunnels will be here when they are ready, no ETA ready to share publicly yet :) We're putting most focus on fixing issues and bugs first!

Soon then? hehe.

That's good to know. Can I ask if 'tunnel's will include being able to morph the land when you raise or lower road or rail? for example will we be able to create land embankments or cut-aways where rail can sit slightly below the normal level?

For trains I would be happy with being able to connect surface rail and the metro. A connection asset that allowed a physical link between railroad and current metro tunnels would be sweet for trains, it would just need to show the moving trains going under/coming up.

Vehicle traffic is the bugaboo, though... Maybe something similar, a new metro-like tunnel connection tool linking a positioned asset that is the tunnel entrance/exit for cars?

Just brainstorming a lowest common denominator approach.
I look forward to seeing what they present.

I would rather wait longer and get a more fluid process of pressing than having to place assets where you want a tunnel. Eg: pressing "down" on the gradient like you do to raise intersections and then if you go only one level down it just creates a sunken road/rail (sunken roads could also reduce noise?) and then if you press "down" again it then creates a tunnel. I think this would make intersections look good as you wouldn't really have a proper tunnel each time you want to go under a road.
