I never had performance issues before, but now I am getting intense lag in my lastest game. The year is 1220+ and I am owning huge empire.

I just wonder what exactly causes it because there are better and worse moments. I even had a 10-15 minutes of almost no lag at all, tho. most of the time it is constantly very bad.

I suspect that my Warmogering reformation path contributed to it, since most of my vassal are constantly fighting somebody outside of my empire, keeping my threat level at 50-80% all the time.

It may be worth to check your error log.


Also, assuming you're not using any mods that change in-game static files, the lagging might be an unexpected iteration/bug, like event flooding.

I started playing on different version of the game (although officially stated as compatible) so this perhaps contributed to those errors?

I started playing on different version of the game (although officially stated as compatible) so this perhaps contributed to those errors?
That's most likely the issue. Major version differences (like 2.7.x to 2.8.x) are compatible but they aren't bug-free, and you can play for some time before starting to notice the errors.

FWIW I recently helped someone who wanted a micromod that converted everyone in the game to the same dynasty. It was a dead simple mod and worked perfectly but I noticed that the game lagged like crazy after firing it. My best guess was that there was some sort of intra-dynasty event or decision happening that went crazy once the number of dynasty members went above a certain threshold. I have no idea what you issue is but if your dynasty is huge that could be a part of it.

Army pathfinder is a big contributor, I had a game recently where I triggered multiple defensive pacts leading to me fighting most of the world, performance tanked duing that war.


I suspect that my Warmogering reformation path contributed to it, since most of my vassal are constantly fighting somebody outside of my empire, keeping my threat level at 50-80% all the time.
If you are a pagan its not just wars, you vassal will also likely be raiding as well, so Pagan realms can cause more strain than other religious groups when they get huge.

Also, you’re overdue for a Black Death. When it comes and murders 50% of living characters. It makes the game run so much more smoothly.

I can’t speak too much for the technical stuff.

Unfortunately Black Death is usually very weak in my games. I had only one black death which took over entire world as it should. Recently I had black death as well but it never left german lands, basically disappeared rather quickly.

As far as i recall succession calculation.

Having a big empire is another cause. To many things need to be calculated/compared.

Game encourages you to land your dynasty members and generally spread your dynasty to make it more prestigious.
Not really, no. Game encourages you to land your sons, but not other dynasty members. That's it.
You even get claims in case of gavelkind inheritance.
Nothings says you shouldn't regain them. :p

The dynasty prestige part is a good point, but needs not that many titles to hold to be superior to other dynasties. ;)

Either way, it's a Paradox game, what else to expect than a potential paradox ? :rolleyes:

Well, I only landed my offspring. That's how I ended with 725 dynasty members after 400+ years.

I don't have end game lag, I have early game lag. Every in game month around the 22nd usually, it will hang up for about 5 seconds or so. It started a few days ago. I have no idea why. Anyone else have that problem>

Just a hunch- try hovering over a random selection of characters to see their birthdates, some random seed might have bugged out and yielded way too many births on this date (FYI - all kids from the same biological parents will have the same birth day, for example 22nd of the month, this is a cheesy way to quickly check for hidden bastards and cheating spouses !).

FWIW I recently helped someone who wanted a micromod that converted everyone in the game to the same dynasty. It was a dead simple mod and worked perfectly but I noticed that the game lagged like crazy after firing it. My best guess was that there was some sort of intra-dynasty event or decision happening that went crazy once the number of dynasty members went above a certain threshold. I have no idea what you issue is but if your dynasty is huge that could be a part of it.

I say it is not dynasty per se but very messed up inheritance calculations.
I played a few times as a world-conquering Nomad and after settling there is always massive freezes. At first i though it was a number of titles or holdings or county events. But then i managed to successfully and consistently reproduce slowdowns with inheritance manipulation. For example, you have every kingdom and county in the world with gavelkind succession and 2 heirs. Game runs fine. You manage to kill one of successors - you get 30 min(or more) freeze(yes, game works, mouse moves, but just freeze and 1 song repeating itself forever). Or you try to give title to some of your dynasty members - freeze while giving it to randomly generated characters only freeze the game for few minutes at worst.

Also add to that - heir killed were not of my dynasty but bastard spawned by husband of my daughter who had no other children alive so its not strictly dynastic thing. Freeze started right after i clicked on successful assassination message.
So advice - get rid of any kingdom titles before you settle as nomad and give out counties before you switch to feudalism. Otherwise game may not even load(same freeze but at loading time). And keep savegame before you settle.

I don't suppose there is a fix for it? Do I have to wait for a bunch of people to die or something? I have a good game going and would hate to have to scrap it.

I never had performance issues before, but now I am getting intense lag in my lastest game. The year is 1220+ and I am owning huge empire.
Empires that cover, say, 1/3 or more of the game map have been known to do this ever since the map expansion to India. If that empire explodes in rebellion or civil war the sheer number of units on the map kills performance.

It is not technically possible to fix in the game as it stands, it would take a total rewrite which is not going to happen at this late stage in the game's life, I am sure. Editing the save to destroy excessive units is the only way past it.

Sorry about that!
