I always have an interest in what everyone else is doing so I figured I would start a thread.
Me personally, I started with the Berlin map in 2010. I started with the max amount of money available ($100,000) and 5 banks. I'm using the Vehicle mod to increase capacity.
I have created 5 metro lines that are giving me about $6,000 profit a month, and I'm still paying off a loan at about $3,000 a month.
Of course, I'm not very imaginative so I've based my lines and name on Sydney's railways called CityRail.
The 5 lines are:
The Airport Line
This line connects both airports at either side of the city and passes through a couple of railway terminals along the way. This was the first line opened up by CityRail and was for a long time the most overcrowded. Trains were buldging at the seams (even with the capacity at 200) and many of the stations in the city centre were growing well over 400 people waiting. However, rather than increasing frequency I really wanted to start another line. This proved a bad idea.
The Eastern Line
The Eastern Line was next to be built and almost sent the company under. A poor loan paying off massive interest, along with a declining economy didn't help promote the line, that spread out Northeast to the Suburbs and out west to the Stadium outside of town. The line met up with the Airport Line for just one station which quickly buckled under the added pressure. With no money to spend on new infrastructure or new trains, the lines stagnated and people quickly lost faith in CityRail.
The South Line
10 years or so after the completion of the Eastern Line, The South Line was eventually completed. Going from the suburbs down south up to the top of the City centre and back down south past the airport, the South Line was a mixed bag. It didn't connect with the other lines anywhere along the route, and as such suffered with poor commuter numbers. With barely a half-hour service, and with even more crippling debt, CityRail looked set to finally collapse.
The Northern Line
The Northern Line was complete almost straight after the South Line. Stretching from the suburbs either side of the city and barely touching the centre itself, the Northern Line connected most of the lines together. Whilst patronage increased on the South Line as a result, commute times were far too long for any easy hub changes and the Northern Line was neglected. It uses the oldest trains in the fleet and regularly suffers from break downs. The other lines get regularly replaced trains to ensure delays are minimised, especially the Airport and Eastern lines which are still bulging.
The City Circle
Unlike all the other lines, the City Circle is entirely above ground and is certainly the final link in the chain. The City Circle connects all the lines, and except for a 4 stations on the 11-stop trip, all connect with another service. This line has proved a revelation for the peeps of Berlin, who can now seamlessly jump from one line to another and find their way around the city with ease.
This station is located right near the hospital and is one of the four stations on the City Circle line that don't connect with other services. It follows above the train line in both directions for quite some way.
The biggest station is the one located just outside the department store (picture below), which sits directly above the Northern Line and is serviced by Circle Line trains. 100+ people in each of the 4 platforms is not uncommon. This station has been touted for a possible expansion when the 6th line of CityRail is eventually built.
So what has everyone else done?
