My problem with the game is that I currently seem to be in a limbo in my current campaign. I am playing Sweden and I have managed to take out Norway early (Finnmark, Iceland and capital left) and Denmark is diplo-vassalised. I started the game with the idea of creating a protestant Sweden but at the moment have I run into some kind of lull where I am building a workshop each year and can't do much else while waiting for Denmark to be ready for diplo annexion. I have already played a Sweden campaign in 1.1 so I feel like I perhaps should try something completly new and I would like some good ideas.

I am thinking about playing Portugal and go all out colonising but that doesn't feel like it will go far enough to give me the right "epic" feeling.

Castille is fun, you get to colonise but you are also close enough for some action against France (a more then worthy opponent). Portugal is too safe and has too low manpower for wars imo.

Try out Norway in 1453, they have very little money, in war with Sweden that sends all their forces against Norway, and you have no chance against the extremely good Swedish General. A very difficult starting position. The only thing Norway has is a church. I promise you it is quite a challenge. It is very difficult to do anything as Norway. Oh, and Sweden has twice as many troops as Norway if i remember right.

Oh, for a fun campaign i would recommend either the Timurids or Qara kunyula. They are just to good and powerful.

Try to become Germany as one of the German minors, be the Bismarck before Bismarck.
An idea I am going to try is remaking the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan, except succesfully invading Europe. (Thinking of adding a Mongolian unification event).

Think of a historical event that worked or didn't work and see how you can accomplish it.

I've taken Portugal to 1700 and achieved a massive colonial empire. As long as you aren't keen of fighting European Wars you can have a good time trying to get rich enough to buy the rest of the world and conquering East Asia.

One of the nice things I'm slowly coming to realize about not having historical events and leaders is that countries like Castille or the Ottomans are just like any other country. By that, I mean that they aren't necessarily 'pre-destined for greatness' as they would be in EU2. For example, in EU2 I think even a chimp could turn Castille or Austria into world powers, due to inheritances, leaders, etc. In EU3, you get their real estate, but the rest really is up to you.

Try taking the Ottomans and matching their conquests. See if you can reach their high-water mark, which IIRC extended from Tunis to Baghdad, Yemen to the Volga. Or see if you can accumulate as much land as the Habsburgs, without having their 'luck' in family relations.

Countries like Austria or the Ottomans wouldn't be played by me more than once or twice in EU2, but in EU3, I'm looking forward to playing all countries eventually.

I currently play a funny/challenging game with Duchy of Milan. You start with 2 wealthy provinces (Lombardy & Parma) and a excellent duke: Francesco Sforza. Unfortunetly you're are in a war vs Venice... The Venitians have a important (for Italy ;) ) and well trained army with good generals... But once you survive this first war, you can make your way in the peninsula (getting the italian crown is THE objective)

Personally, I manage to sign a white peace with Venice. Few years after, I get Pise (don't know the english name: the city of the leaning tower;)). Now I'm lookin' forward to diploannex Mantova.

Just try it !

This is my favorite Vanilla country to play. :)

"Pisa". :D

When I play Vanilla, I usually play Milan, but when I play a mod, I like to play one of the Japanese daimyo (Sengoku mod/Magna Mundi/Combomod all have this) or a German minor in the Magna Mundi (the Holy Roman Empire is MUCH tougher to conquer!).

I agree, Norway has been one of the most fun campaigns yet. Once you take Sweden, start colonizing the good places that are left. Take the trade placement NI as your first one and build up a trading empire. Diplo-vassalizing and annexing Scotland is quite easy but beware of the english.

Modena is a good choice too.. you don't start at war, but it's much harder because your provinces are poorer.. I've got great satisfaction in beating Austria in my first war with them after 60 years, even if I went almost bankrupt just to score a white peace.

I already plan a Naxos game with goal to unify Italy for my next SP campaign.

Hahaha, good luck! Even better would be the duchy of Athens, as you are (or should be) a Morean vassal.

For a challenge and a pretty hard game go with Hamburg and try to unite germany. Atleast I've had fun the first ~50 years so far, though I haven't gotten a single needed prov for germany yet. But well, I choose the slow start with trade and getting a few colonies oversees grown to cities, getting into an early war with my neighbors would only see me annexed pretty quickly...
