You can state this as many times as you like, can you actually provide common examples where a 20,000 man army would put a ruler in the red for a few months?

I'm not sure what other people do, but I don't like going bankrupt in CK so I just don't pay my troops by adjusting the slider and if they attrition off so be it.

I'm sure real rulers did the same thing... Going bankrupt in CK is much more of a choice that a requirement. If you let your army stay divided so they live off the land in seperate provinces then you can save yourself some money by keep the sliders so you don't have negative income.

OK. During the 100 years war (and prior conflicts between England and France), the English could only support their armies (which generally numbered 20000-30000 men) through massive loans from Italian bankers. For instance, Henry III went utterly bankrupt in 1255, I believe the biggest army he ever took to field was 30k.

Hell, just look at the chronicles of English rulers during the 100 years war, and take a drink every time the word 'bankrupt' is used. You'll be stone drunk before you're out of the 14th century. War was the best way to drive yourself into massive debt all the way through the middle ages.

EDIT: I think we're rather derailing this thread though. Maybe we should take this discussion somewhere else.

I definitely think that the naming of children and courtiers according to mothers culture or provincial culture has to go, if only for asthetic reasons.
I would also like to see the introduction of several new dynasties, kingdoms and duchies with latest patch, if possible..... :)
The "Sheikdom of Praha" thing should be a top priority, as well as BB penalty for crusading, and the AI needs some tweaking as well for treaties and the way it responds to attacks on allies.

All in all though, an excellent game that has brought me many hours of enjoyment. Thank you Johan, I am a longtime Paradox fan and will continue to buy your games as long as you keep up the excellent level of support and patching.

Seems like a problem have been introduced in the latest patch (or maybe one of the earlier beta-patches), that really need to be fixed.

If a vassal of mine (as a King) declares war on me, with a claim to my king-title, and I then beat them and force them to recognize my title, I will actually give away my title to them.

I have seen a post about it before, but I have rarely had to opportunity to see it.

I tried to reproduce it again yesterday, but in all the following attempts, the Duke, whose vassal count DOW'ed me, settle peace before I could. I will try again later tonight.

Ok ...took a while before I got back to my game, but I managed to reproduce it (also have a save ready, where I can make this happen every single time).

This is the peace offer I am making to the Bishop of Galway:

ck_peaceofferwithGalway.JPG

And this is the result after he accepts. In the log, it states that I am given the King title (that I already hold), but he is the king. Sometimes, Galway looses that king title, and all the vassals of Ireland goes independent. Other times he remains ArchBishop/King of Ireland, but my vassal (I can revoke his title).

Apologies if this has been said already but I'd really like to be able to choose a monarch's name and see numerals for different reigns instead of the standard Dynasty name.

It gets a bit dull ..

Yes I know why it does it and what it symbolizes but it isn't an accurate way to simulate it.
Having the ruler of a province build every single structure with the money from his own treasury is not an accurate simulation either. ;) It's called an abstraction. The provincial structures are an abstraction of various infrastructural, legal, and economic elements. As such, I don't have a problem with the buildings disappearing; as Olaus said, selling business rights (also taxation rights, trading licenses, the land itself, etc.) was a common way to raise money in this period.

I'm now leaning towards allowing you to marry your courtiers outside of your own dynasty - when you have a large court with many good dynastic names you want to retain but not the territory to give the key male members, it's frustrating.

So that you can get even bigger courts ? With useless characters, since each court has only 5 positions to fill.

Yes, we need less characters. It also should be more difficult to keep good courtiers.
I agree with this in principle, and my initial reaction to the higher fertility rates of the latest patch was to worry that the game would become too easy because succession is always assured.

But after playing with the new patch for a while, I'm not so sure. Now that I don't have to worry about hoarding every single courtier to make sure someone can fill the adviser positions, I've been able to start thinking about using them to create international marriage ties -- which I've never really been able to do before.

I think I'd like it if the fertility rate were somewhere between the pre-2.1 dearth and the post-2.1 boom.

Give a player count or duke the option to continue a war after his overlord makes peace. This would prevent defeated sheiks from buying peace by offering a distant king peace.

Other ideas:

Overlords could reward loyal vassals with titles, honors, and money. That would make it more fun when your lord calls up your levies. Letting the player control his forces when called up would also be fun.

The church could reward crusaders with money. Playing the brave (impoverished) count heading east would be more fun if the church noticed your deeds and kept you in the black.

P.S. Johan, thanks for asking!

Awesome Johan.

A great list of changes/fixes... very happy to see revoke excommunication fixed.
How does the new inbred rule work? Does this mean that finally marrying two distant cousins (last common ancestor 3 or more gens up) is now safe?

should be safe now as long as they dont share a grandparent.

Cool. Especially the revoke excomm, it was badly needed.

Since the patch is still labeled 'beta', I take it there will be more work done?

It looks to me like these changes won't screw up an existing game save (but I'm fairly ignorant.) Any thoughts on that?

Also: what exactly does that .pdb file to...?

There is no guarantee that your older save will still work. You can try, but Paradox doesn't test such things

I believe that file is used by Johan for finding out more about crashes.
