So........ Decided to play my second Reaper's game as Nantes 867 to sit back, get a small and prosperous realm, and see what happens? Well........ this happened.

First they (Sunni Mongols) took over Sweden and parts of Denmark, then took over the HRE. Crusades are not active, and no holy orders are available even though it's 1042 (and some of the "trigger" sites are in infidel hands). Jihads have activated, though.

Now every time the Mongols declare war it's like a full-scale world war, with EVERYONE on the map getting involved, from Ireland to India. The Mongols usually lose enough land and reach -100 warscore before they're able to win anything else (so far they've attacked France (*gulp*) and Persia, but I'm wondering where the Crusades and Holy Orders are? I think that they've been whittled down to ~70k doomstacks, but it definitely hasn't been easy. Thoughts?

I'm more bothered by the fact that they decided to eat the HRE while there are still perfectly good Huns and Bulgars to chomp on. Furthermore, it seems like most of the European areas they conquered are still Christian... and seperated by two rather large kingdoms... and for some reason haven't clued into the fact that they could probably just declare independence all together, like with a faction or somesuch, and be rid of the whole 'Mongol' thing.

But that would be crazy.

The Pope send a crusade against my germanic empire after i pressed the claim of one on my sons for the kingdom of west france (son of concubine karling princess), the now pagan King of France declared almost inmidietlly a war for the other two kingdoms (middle and east france... and he won). Only Aquitane/burgundy remain catholic and independant.

Two years later (996) the pope declared a crusade for "austrasia" and 4 holy orders appeared at the same time. The pop up about "Crusaders Kings" mentioned "western europe governed by the heathens"...

Maybe with just Germany is not enough? or maybe the catholic moral authority is too low...

[On a side note, Saxony still exist in my game, maybe that have some influence?]

I'm not a history buff, but apparently Crusades didn't take place that early. Isn't there a trigger in-game where you have to be at a certain year before the Pope gives the green flag to start Crusades? I thought it was a trigger based on the year of the world, but maybe it's something else.

I'm reading the first real one took place in 1095.

I'm not a history buff, but apparently Crusades didn't take place that early. Isn't there a trigger in-game where you have to be at a certain year before the Pope gives the green flag to start Crusades? I thought it was a trigger based on the year of the world, but maybe it's something else.

I'm reading the first real one took place in 1095.

There are totally triggers that can start the Crusades as early as 900AD (including one in Germany, so this would absolutely qualify), which is why I'm a bit concerned that they haven't started yet...

Catholic MA is usually around 100%, even with an anti-pope (and there definitely isn't an anti-pope anymore, since it was controlled by the HRE).

Is around 1050 in the original game or as soon as the Byzantine empire lose greece or anatolia (an entire kingdom) against the muslims. With the old gods start Germany/saxony falling back in the hands of a reformed germanic pagan after or arround 850 also activate the crusades...

With the Charlemagne start... i'm not sure if the same rules apply. But there is a trigger to Crusades, either a year if nothing crazy happen or X zone falling to heathens/infidels, but they also need moral authority, the Pope can't call a crusade if the moral autorithy is to low (so maybe in the OP case catholicism is very low and the "crusader kings" event can't happen).

Jihads can happend arround 30 to 50 years after the first crusade againt a muslim kingdom or if importan muslims zones fall to the infidels

Maybe it's not the top liege that triggers crusades, but the one who holds the title, and as that one is still catholic....
Hmm...don't know.Just speculation.

Don't know what the delay was, but Crusades finally triggered around 1059 or so. 4 Holy Orders, 13k heavy troops, and the Pope called a crusade for Germany. Won it, and so the map looks a little different:

Unfortunately when he lost the crusade, his infamy score went down to ~7%, so his first order of business was invading me for Germany... Did manage to fight him off, and trimmed down his doomstacks by a good portion (he's now down to 45k doomstacks and 5k other/demense/etc troops). Unfortunately Hispania snuck in while I was preoccupied and grabbed Toulouse, so looks like this is going to be a bit of back-and-forth for a while. And did I mention the Mongols were Sunni as well?

But that would be crazy.
I'm betting what happened was that the HRE owned some provinces in Scandinavia, which gave the Mongols the border they needed. And if I remember correctly, their CB gives them all the occupied land, and as the Mongols were triggered ahistorically early, the HRE hadn't built up enough troops, and wasn't able to resist in the slightest, got fully occupied (as there isn't anything stopping the Mongols from just walking across all of Eastern Europe unopposed to Germany), and that was that.

They activate after 900 provided that certain core holdings have fallen to the infidels. IIRC Toulouse and Cologne are among them. Otherwise you need to get to around 1100 and Jerusalem not being Christian---might be other triggers too.

Jihads and Crusades can both start from 900---and the trigger doesn't change depending on which DLC you are running.

Unless they changed it then you indeed get all occupied land with the invasion CB. That is why it is so OP. You can literally gobble up whole empires with it.

It is one of the options when starting a new game. You can choose to have the Mongols show up at their historical time, or you can set it so they can occur randomly after two hundred years of gameplay have passed.
