Its the Ottoman conquest of Arta against Epirus and the Pope, and somehow the Byzantines are fighting on the Ottoman side!

Byzantium trying to infiltrate the Ottoman war effort as an ally. "Maybe if we fight on their side, they'll think they've already conquered us, and Constantinople won't fall."

Seriously though, what's the Ottoman/Byzantine relationship like? I'm genuinely curious as to see how this came to be.

I'm not sure if this is your case, but I've seen that many times Ottos get a subjugation CB on Byzantium (and they use it). If that is the case, Byz and Athens are both Ottomans' vassals.

It has to be a subject, otherwise Epirus would be rivaling it or at least have it as an enemy.

You can see in the event log on the screenshot that Athens requested rightful ownership from Ottomans, so yeah they're subjects.

Turns out they have indeed become a vassal. A disloyal one at that meaning the Ottomans still dont have Constantinople or south Greece by 1490. Thats an....interesting change in behaviour, lets call it that

I suppose if the Ottomans call a diet before they get a claim on Constantinople, one possible Nobility (Beyliks?) mission is "subjugate Byzantium"... so yeah. weird.
