Or at least they're far from intuitive.

I just had a little bash-your-head with Denmark (leader of a PU with Sweden AND Norway..fun...and of course the HREmperor did shit..that doesn't sound WAI, not by a long stretch of the imagination) and wanted to concede defeat, by swearing fealty to them (they wanted to annex Lübeck). Turns out, no matter what I chose (Denmark gets Lübeck; Denmark gets Lübeck AND I'm becoming the vassal; I just become their vassal) it was unacceptable for them. I don't think that this is how it works or how it should work or how it was intended to work, otherwise we could just throw the whole diplomacy shit over board and do a Total War style "Gotte conquer 'em all". Puuuuhlease tell me this is not working as intended.

If you mouse hoover over the check mark in the peace negotiation screen, it will provide an explanation for what factors in the AI's decision. Have you tried that?

Also, a red, thumb-down option will never be accepted. Perhaps that explains the situation?

I know that they'll never accept it, but they even refused a green-thumb up. The problem, though, is that they refuse to accept an over NOBODY in their right mind would refuse. Plus, it's a total pain in the ass for the player. Even more stupid is just the fact that they helped me conquering the territory they were fighting me for then. This AI behaviour is on a Total War level, imho. Sorry, maybe I'm just too pissed about it, but the AI is derping like a boss.

I've just been playing France in a war against Castille, but I noted there was a -1000 modifier that basically wouldn't let me offer peace, even if I ceded most of my territory, and the war was only about taking Toulouse. That's just ridiculous. Like in many Paradox games, there are lots of features which seem to be about making things outrageously difficult rather than fun or realistic, like the constant spawning of rebels and random events that lower stability. I was hoping there would be an improvement to game mechanics, but there's really very little appreciable difference from EU3 apart from a shiny new map and trade. They've kept all the annoying bits that make the game frustrating.

Monarch points isn't a huge change? Besides, there is a 40+ page pdf detailing the differences between EU3 and EU4. There is plenty of new stuff in EU4, so it takes some adaptation to the new systems, which seems that you have a bit of trouble with.

What kind of -1000 modifier was there? Was it with a junior partner in the enemy alliance? So far it seems that in Eu4, seperate peace is much more difficult.

OP, how many times have you refused a reasonable peace offer from an AI state you were attacking in a Paradox game? Why did you do that? Because you wanted more war score to make more onerous demands? Because you wanted to hurt them economically by occupying all their provinces for awhile? There are lots of reasons to refuse a peace when you are winning.

I love the new AI. You can't just buy it off by giving it a province. If it's winning the war it'll carpet siege your provinces to 100% war score and then take you for everything it can get. Like it should. Like you would in its place. Fair is fair.

That was always my #1 major complaint against the AI in Vicky II. It never knew how to press an advantage. If it managed to totally smash the enemy army to bits, it would just take its one province and go home even if it had 0 infamy.

I'm okay with not cheating the AI off its victory. BUT I offered it to become its vassal, I offered it to give him the land it wanted and become its vassal and it just. took. one. province. I could not create an offer it would accept! That has nothing to do with clever AI. AI is never clever. But in this case, it's downright illogical.
