Hey Guys,
Recently brought Rome (& VV) and I'm loving it. There are some things that i miss a little from Eu3 that i cant find (navy patrols, detach siege are two i remember off the top of my head) but there is so many little things that i am really liking.
The added diplomacy options are rocking. Ability to choose if you want to call on an ally or not is awesome. The government systems I am finding really fun so far. Combat seems quite a bit more in depth and easy to make sense of after Eu3.
Couple of things I think need work are the character system and the religious system. I'm getting pretty tired of having to constantly pick a religion to suck up to. Surely there must be some kind of auto setting. I can't imagine caesar having to put up with the same old priest coming to him every two months to check if he wanted to keep making the same offerings.
The other thing i think could use a bit of work is the character system. In CK:DV you would really start to grow attached to Characters and Dynastays. in Rome it feels alot harder to get that same connection because it all feels a bit... soulless (the areas where you work with characters).

Overall though i feel rome gets a bit unfairly bashed. I brought it expecting it to be disappointing after all the sledging it receives (although obviously i was hoping for a good game!) and I feel I've found a game that is very fun to play.

It might not be the absolute classic that Eu3 is but its a great paradox title still. Three cheers!

SO much hate? Hehe. I guess you missed the "This Game Sucks thread" - which is probably the biggest thread in the Rome forums history.
Unfortunately the thread got closed (cant remember the reasons).

And well, i dont know about the others but i also like many of the things you mentioned. However, in the end, you will find yourself playing at tremendous high speeds with barely anything to do due to the game being so "soulless". And after a few games, you will have something better to do then to play Rome.

Oh and i also definetely agree that the character/religious system must be worked out. But i wouldnt go that far and call Rome a "great title".

I think that libations and sacrifices were done at least once a day back then.

More likely they'd be told to do it until i tell you otherwise and they did.
No, it was a normal part of the fabric of society (much like Muslim prayer-times today). If anything, with vastly more deities/cults to take into consideration than in monotheism, people often overdid it so as not to offend a particular god; it was a religious time.

I'm reading an amusing book called "Greek and Roman Warfare" by John Drogo Montagu. (Great name huh?). On sacrifices:

"Both the ancient Greeks and Romans regularly performed ritual animal sacrifices to the gods before battle and examined the victim's entrails for auspices. If the omens were unfavourable the commander would repeat them, sometimes several times, until the omens augured a victory."

Later:

"the consul Publius Claudius had little respect for sacrificial portents. When told before the battle of Drepanum (249) that the chickens would not eat, he flung them into the sea where they could drink."

Unfortunately, his fleet ended up having a drink along with the chickens when it got beat by the Carthaginians. Claudius survived but was put on trial for sacrilege.

The general root of superstition is that men observe when things hit, and not when they miss; and commit to memory the one, and forget and pass over the other.

I think that makes my position quite clear on omens and the like.;)

I see the "bonuses" and "penalties" attached to omens as sth psychological...

When the high priest tells my troops that we have the "blessing of Mars", they hope for the god's help in the next battle. So, their morale increases. Not as a result of divine intervention, but of human superstitious beliefs.

I think you've pretty much summed up the game very well.
At some point you will become bored but that is true of pretty much any game, I definitely don't think it deserves the "hate" it seems to be receiving.

I saw the temple of Apple yesterday in London's Regent Street so I went in and behold there were dozens of young acolytes obediently nodding and tapping as the priest made some mutterings.

Ha, but what such brain washing must achieve - they still charge them £29.95 for EU:Rome - and not even a manual.

I have found VV to be quite fun. Though a bit confusing and tedious at times.

I think from a EU3 player standpoint the revolts and civil wars are very frustrating because in EU3 revolts and civil wars are avoidable very easily and have no meaning or background.

So when they happen in R:VV, I get frustrated when really there wasn't much I could do about it even though I was furiously micro managing everything.

(Maybe I'm doing it wrong)

But from my understanding civil wars are supposed to be the fun part of VV because they are quite detailed and dynamic and as a EU3 player I was conditions to despise civil wars.

For me that's what ultimately killed the game. It seems such a waste that they went through the trouble of implementing a character system in the EU engine but left it without a soul.
