I just came back from another attempt at getting interested in a HoI2 game, but quicky realized it just wasn't as 'fun' as playing Victoria. But, one thing HoI2 does have, is a pretty dynamic weather system, which will effect ground conditions & attrition (freezing, muddy, etc). Frankly it almost seems like the developers sat down and based the whole game on making it a big challenge for Germany to go deep into Russia (which is noticably over-sized, on the map), struggling with logistics, partisans, and... weather - in a pretty big way.
Coming back to Victoria again, I thought I'd go for another fun, dominating Russia game, taking advantage of all those things that work for the USSR in WWII. But then it occurred to me, there's not really any weather in Victoria. OK, no sweat. But at least have some freakin' freezing effects in certain places. Granted, I've seen this 'bad climate' modifier, but I think that's really just related to the life sustainability of the province... it has nothing to do with seasonality.
So, assume I'm Napoleon, or Bismarck, and have a 2-million-man army of cavalry, and want to 'blitz' Russia... TRUE OR FALSE:
It makes no difference what time of year you invade Russia. Might as well just 'go for it' in December. Why not...
Anyway, on the terrain map I see this real thin layer of frost on the very northern-most provinces... the ones that are 'frozen' all year 'round basically. But that's really just a type of topography, for a very select few areas, way up north. Permafrost, I guess.
Whatever. It just sucks that when you play as Russia in this game, Gen. Winter is taking a permanent vacation. Unless I'm missing something...
