So is the Warp like warp drives? (a W40K question)

Totally serious and not time-wasting question I am posting here!

So I'm going to play the Imperium of Man for at least my first game and I was looking at the FTL methods. On the one hand, Warp drives seem functionally the same as in the Warhammer universe, however there's isn't really that alternate dimension you go through. That seems closer to the Wormhole method of travel.

So basically, should I stick to functional relevance or go for the terrors of the Wormholes? :p

Well, you can have interdimensional demons shouting "HAK HAK HAK!" if you get deep into tech tree regarding FTL methods, so yeah, probably warp in stellaris is similar to warp in WH40k

I think warp drives are more like Star Trek.

What about hyperdrive? Seems to me that's a different dimension your are traveling through.

I think the Warp drives are supposed to work more like in Star Trek. You don't jump into the warp, you are "warping" the space in front of you.

Yeah, every FTL method basically works by cheating realspace in the universe like using a space/time hex code editor.

Warp folds space in front of the ship as you say, hyperdrives jump into another dimension or flows down some sort of natural/constructed extraspatial connection between stars and wormholes punches two holes in the universe capable of ignoring the fact that space exists between them.

Warp would be best to start with, then Jump Drives later (unless you mod).
Warp is admittedly closer to Tau travel in 40k universe and early man space flight.

I think hyperlanes (according to the wiki) were built by an ancient race. they seem more like the "webway" that the Eldar exist within and travel.
The 40k warp seems a bit more like the jump drives that bore into another dimension.

The thing is that in 40k there are only certain places you can travel to and it's dictated by warp storms and also if you have psykers for navigation (either on the ship or at destination)... although humans have the Emperor who is like a psychic beacon. This makes the wormholes feel a bit more like what you'd be looking for, although they don't fit it entirely.

My opinion:
The Imperium uses warp drives. It's relatively slow just like in WH40K. Movement is not limited, if you have a good navigator you can jump to anywhere in a given radius.
Eldar webway is like hyperlane drive. They can move much faster, but their movement is limited to the "highway".
The Necrons use wormhole because their ships "teleport" almost instantly.

I'd like the ability to have wormhole-gates at either end and have civilisations travel at sub-light speed to seed these gates. These could be a variety of wormhole tech and would have no cool-down times and be contintually on, but have to be set up before hand and consume credits., as an example.
Opening and closing hyperlanes would also be helpful (for both attackers and defenders).
Some kind of warp just like 40k would be good too, where you can slip into another dimension and travel faster, undetected unless the enemy has scanners, like a stealth dimension.

1: Would make initial expansion way too slow. Would favor rich empires too much.
2: Undermines the point of hyperlanes, the one primary weakness as with wormhole's need for stations and warp's energy costs and slower speed, that you are forced to abide by an existing network.
3: Jump drives approach this.

I was just brainstorming really... not all civilisations will approach the same technology in the same way and I'm hoping for some small variations in say, warp or hyperlanes. I understand that core principles will be the same, but it'd be the difference between a civilisation that uses solely public transport to one that solely uses private transportation as another crappy example from me ;)
