So I watched the twitch stream of Charlemagne AND I WAS SHOCKED!

Pretty harsh to call someone idiot if they don't know where Goths came from. Yes, even a Project leader, since it's not his job to get the facts right, leading the Project is his job.

Johan expressed himself humbly at the stream and even said he wasn't a historian in any way but rather just a person that's interested in history. He also said he left the history parts of development to more qualified people in the team so I don't really see a problem here. His job is to be a project leader, not a historian.

Sometimes I think it would be best for Paradox to just hire a historian to do the dirty work but I understand that money doesn't grow on trees.

They do hire historians to do the dirty work. It's just the matter of implementing it in a way it makes sense gameplay-wise.

I'd guess that they probably came from Africa originally, like all other humans.

Anyway. I read that the first wave of Goths picked up so many extras on the way that their ethnicity was so diverse and the term Goth ceased to be a meaningful way to describe ethnicity.

EVERYONE came from Africa (supposedly), the question is where did the specific tribe that split off and became Goths come from?

Wrong! They originally came from Africa! :D

I don't want to be "that guy" but the current Out of Africa Theory is not as widely accepted anymore in the scientific community.

I reckon "Out of Africa" makes more sense than multi-region, to be honest. They both have merits, don't get me wrong however to me the former seems to be more logical.

I'm from Serbia, and I barely know anything about Serbs before they settled in the Balkans.
It is common knowledge here that we settled from somewhere-northeast. (Although there are some wackos that believe how we always lived here, and that Vatican is deliberately fabricating our history, because.....reasons)
But not many can explain who lived in the territory of present-day Serbia, before we came to settle. Sure, there are people that can explain, and they are sometimes SHOCKED how others don't have that "common knowledge". But knowing every historical fact is not common knowledge. Honestly, people should care more about future than the past. Don't get me wrong, it's always good to know more. But it's not an obligation, it's a choice.

Mitochondrial DNA and Y-Chromosome tracking both point to Africa as the genesis of our species. The only real rifts in the scientific community is how we left Africa (waves, gradual distribution, mass exodus, &c).

A theory is what it is a theory and just like the evolution theory or the big bang theory we may probably never be 100% sure.

Still the africa theory is actually widely accepted by the scientific community.

I think we are missing the obvious GAMEPLAY question that this lack of certainty regarding the Goths brings to the fore: namely will that Visigothic cultureblob in Iberia be in any way Germanic? It seems to me that there should not be the cultureblob like that in the first place at such a late date in history as 769, but what culture group in game are they going to assign it to?

I think it's pathetic that people who start threads like these, who get their historic panties in a twist, can't logically come to the conclusion that Paradox studio is not a studio full of history buffs. Their game devs. They develop games. So two people doing the stream didn't know where Goths were. It's a classic case of >I know where they come from+You don't so your an idiot = immature dementia.

Get over it. If another mans knowledge on a subject is inferior to your own and you can't help but want to point that out, then seriously you need your head examined.

I think the Goths did come from southern Sweden, as the etymological connection is undeniable.
However they left Scandinavia like when? When Jesus was still around? Earlier?

To call them proto-swedes is a big stretch.

I find it funny how "get over it" is a phrase used by so many people on the internet, even when it sounds like they're getting upset about something they need to get over themselves.

I honestly don't care how much they know or don't know about history. If they get it right in the game, good. If they don't get it right, it should be fixed. It's only a problem when they feel like it doesn't matter whether it's right or not, and even then, I can overlook minor things for the sake of gameplay.

To call them proto-swedes is a big stretch.

Probably around the 100-200s for settling around the Vistula, then following the Vistula southeast into Ukraine and hence the Black Sea by 300ish.
